Today’s Action: No LGBTQ+ protections with the filibuster in place!
The Equality Act – to include sexual orientation and gender identity as protected characteristics under civil rights law – is one of several pieces of legislation that Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer is considering bringing to a vote this month.
We currently have 49 out of the 50 votes needed to pass it. Sen. Joe Manchin (D-WV) is our final Democrat hold-out (we’re working on this), but the bill passed the House with bipartisan support...so we may not need Manchin to pass it. But before the Senate gets to a final vote on any piece of legislation, they must first end debate on it – which requires 60 votes. Republicans intend to filibuster the bill by refusing to end debate.
Every day that we delay in passing the Equality Act, our LGBTQ+ communities continue to face hostile living and work environments.
Call or email your Senators and tell them to join 72% of Americans in supporting the Equality Act, and passing it during Pride Month! Tell Republicans to get on the right side of history, and demand Democrats let nothing get in the way of passing it, including abolishing the filibuster.
This abysmal state of affairs comes in the face of worsening news: across the country, at least 30 states have passed or are considering discriminatory anti-trans laws. Meanwhile, 7 in 10 Americans support the Equality Act, including 50% of Republicans!
So, it’s time to show GOP voters how poorly their Republican Senators are representing their viewpoints...and show Democrats why the filibuster needs to go.
Email or call (202.224.3121) your Senators and demand they pass the Equality Act this Pride Month! Remind Republicans that 50% of their voters support this legislation – and tell Democrats to abolish the filibuster to ensure it passes.
