AOC: “Who are we protecting?”

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez gave an impassioned speech on the House floor in response to the Supreme Court’s disastrous decision to overturn Roe v Wade. In case you missed it, here’s an excerpt:   “I think it's important for us also to tackle this myth that this is somehow about babies or children or life. Because the same individuals who purport – claim to be protecting life – fight against universal healthcare.   Do they believe in universal childcare? Do they believe in life after birth? From their policy positions, I assure you, the evidence is lacking.   A party and individuals who claim to protect the lives of children – just weeks after over a dozen children died in Texas – now claim to support their life. The lives of the young. Who are we protecting? Who does this protect? No one. Overturning Roe puts every single one of us in danger.”   Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez June 24, 2022   While Democratic leadership staged empty publicity stunts in the wake of yesterday’s ruling, AOC, Cori Bush, and all of our BNC representatives are leading the hard conversations we need to have about our path forward.   This ruling represents the first time in living memory that the Supreme Court has fully revoked an established constitutional right. And the right-wing extremists on the court have made it clear: they are just getting started.   We have a hard road ahead of us, but there IS a path forward. TAKE THE POLL: Does arming teachers make students safer?

 

Republican lawmakers are once again pushing to arm teachers – and they’re passing new laws as we speak.   Until last week, teachers and other school staff in Ohio who wanted to carry a gun on school property were required to undergo 700 hours of firearm safety training.   But a new bill just signed into law by Gov. Mike DeWine reduces the training requirement to 24 hours.   Our Executive Director, Adrienne Bell, is a Texas school teacher and she shared her thoughts on this new law in a recent email:   “Most teachers have zero interest in carrying guns to school because we inherently know it makes us and our students less safe.”   Now we would like to hear from you.   Do you think it’s a good idea for teachers to carry guns in schools?

In the more than two decades since Columbine, studies have shown that adding armed police officers, “hardening” school buildings, and pushing to arm teachers has done nothing to stem the tide of gun violence in our schools.   There are two bills before Congress right now. One has passed the House, and the other is being negotiated in the Senate.   While these bills are hailed as bipartisan gun reform, neither includes the necessary changes that could have prevented the massacre at Uvalde, Buffalo, or any other recent mass shooting.   The vast majority of Americans support common sense gun safety. On the ballot tomorrow: CA, MT and NJ

 

Tomorrow is another big primary day for BNC, with FOUR of our candidates on the ballot in three states.   BNC is working to turn out the vote and preparing for the next races ahead, but we need the resources to build and maintain our infrastructure.
