Things Republicans Said This Year

Things Republicans Said This Year

It’s almost the end of 2023 and because it was, in many ways, a long and tiresome year, I’m going to engage in a brief moment of pettiness, disclosing the dumbest things I heard this year from the party of Trump. I kept score because I believe in accountability. This isn’t all of the things, it’s just a sampling. There isn’t time or room for all of them. But here are some of my least-favorites.

Marjorie Taylor Greene is among the obvious nominees for people who went places no American, and certainly not one who is an elected representative should go. She has abandoned the precept that she represents all of her constituents, not just the ones who voted for her and subscribe to her dangerous views. Unlike Greene, we know that voting is a right. While most Republicans aren’t this explicit about taking the right away from Democrats, we get the point. Also, I’m still struggling to understand why Democrats would “flee” blue states.

Greene has an appalling lack of knowledge about history. Nikki Haley wouldn’t admit that the Civil War was about slavery when she was caught on stage like a deer in the headlights. Greene is cavalier about what a second one would mean for our country. This is essentially a call for that.

Then there is the love of guns. The AR-15 lapel pins sported by Republican members of Congress. The suggestion that if we only had more guns, mass shootings could be avoided. The refusal to acknowledge the statistics that show this happens in our country, where guns are freely available, but not in countries where access is restricted. So, of course, Lauren Boebert, no-longer member of Congress George Santos, and Alabama Representative Barry Moore devoted their legislative time and efforts to this attempt to name a national gun for America.

And there’s the persistent hate of those who are different, the need to make life even more difficult for those who are already struggling enough as it is without being denied health care. The ACLU says 2023 saw a bumper crop of anti-LGBTQ legislation from the right, including 508 bills introduced and at least 84 passed, nationwide. North Dakota, Tennessee, and Florida ended up with the worst records.

A lot of what we heard from the Republican party this year was just plain stupid. And mean.

A lot of dumb stuff is being passed off as political speech. There don't seem to be consequences for any of it. Yes, you have to choose your battles and you can't fight every provocation, but the Democratic party can do more about these sorts of comments, and probably will as we move from primaries to the general election. Do you really want a representative who thinks we should bomb our ally, Mexico? One who wants to take away people’s right to vote? Talk like this needs to be hammered home when it happens, because it is, after all, what they are saying.

How do you respond to a Marjorie Taylor Green who calls for Civil War? Do you ignore it to avoid giving her oxygen? Maybe that’s the smart move, because she’s certainly in search of all the attention she can get. But we know there are dark corners of our society where calls for violence, and perhaps even civil war, take hold when left unchecked. Democrats have to make sure this doesn’t get normalized.

Here's what happens when you normalize anti-democratic behavior: Donald Trump is posting, as he did into the run up to 2020, about voting fraud. The implication is always that if he loses, it's because of fraud. Remember that? The big lie didn’t emerge in the wake of the 2020 election. From far out, Trump was saying that if he lost, he would not accept the results of the election. He's doing it again.

Nikki Haley’s refusal to say slavery was the cause of the Civil War should be disqualifying in the minds of voters. Donald Trump’s penchant for insurrection if he loses the vote may end up being disqualifying in the eyes of the courts and will hopefully be so in the eyes of voters. But there is some persistent rot at the core of the Republican party that permits them to tolerate these sorts of views and comments from people they accept in their party. They are reprehensible, dangerous, and anti-American. And it’s important that we take note; that we make sure that in 2024, people understand who and what they are voting for, and what those people are saying.

Do you have a least favorite things a Republican said or did this year?

NEBRASKA & IOWA REPUBLICAN GOVERNORS DENYING FOOD TO POOR KIDS!

Nebraska governor stands firm on rejection of federal money to feed food-insecure children

BY MARGERY A. BECK
Updated 4:39 PM EST, December 29, 2023

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Nebraska’s Republican governor on Friday reiterated his rejection of $18 million in federal funding to help feed children who might otherwise go hungry while school is out.

Nebraska will not participate in the 2024 Summer Electronic Benefits Transfer for Children — or Summer EBT — program, Gov. Jim Pillen said in a written statement. That statement came as advocates for children and low-income families held a news conference outside the Governor’s Mansion in Lincoln to call on Pillen to change his mind before the Jan. 1 deadline to sign up for the program.

The program — part of federal assistance made available during the COVID-19 pandemic — would provide pre-loaded EBT cards to families whose children are eligible for free and reduced-price lunches at school. Those families would receive $40 per eligible child per month over the summer. The cards can be used to buy groceries, similar to how SNAP benefits are used.

“COVID-19 is over, and Nebraska taxpayers expect that pandemic-era government relief programs will end too,” Pillen said in his statement. Pillen announced on Dec. 19 that Nebraska would not participate in the program. He has drawn a firestorm of criticism for later defending that stance at a news conference by saying, “I don’t believe in welfare.”

GET A LIFE! NOTHING TO DO WITH HUNGRY KIDS!

Neighboring Iowa is also opting out of the program, with Republican Gov. Kim Reynolds announcing that decision last week and saying, “An EBT card does nothing to promote nutrition at a time when childhood obesity has become an epidemic.”

States that participate in the federal program are required to cover half of the administrative costs, which would cost Nebraska an estimated $300,000. Advocates of the program note that the administrative cost is far outweighed by the $18 million benefit, which the U.S. Department of Agriculture estimates would benefit 175,000 Nebraska children who might otherwise go hungry on some days during the summer.

Advocacy group Nebraska Appleseed on Friday delivered a petition bearing more than 6,100 signatures from 230 communities across Nebraska calling on the state to utilize the federal Summer EBT program. Many of those who signed the petition also included comments expressing how much the program is needed, especially in light of multi-year inflation that has outpaced many household incomes.

“Everything is expensive,” wrote one mother from Bruno, a small rural town in eastern Nebraska. “I’m a single mom who works full time, and my budget is already spread so thin. My son plays sports, and as a growing boy, he could practically eat a hole through the wall; it feels like it never stops. The extra money for food would free up money for things like bills and savings, and car maintenance.”

Pillen insisted Friday that the state would continue to help food-insecure children through the Summer Food Service Program, which provides meals and snacks at various sites when school is not in session. Providing on-site services also allows providers to spot and report issues like malnutrition, neglect and abuse in children, he said.

But critics say not all families have access to the on-site programs — particularly in Nebraska’s vast rural stretches, where sites can be many miles away from a struggling family.

“No kid ever said, ‘I want to be born into a family that struggles,’” said Jenni Benson, president of the Nebraska State Education Association — the state’s largest teachers union. “Why would we even question that people and children deserve food?”

Preston Love Jr,, a longtime community advocate in Omaha, on Friday questioned whether Pillen was bowing to political pressure in rejecting the federal funding.

“I know the governor a little bit, and he seems to be a reasonable man. He’s a man who is compassionate in conversation,” Love said. “This is out of character. So, obviously, he’s not following his heart. He’s following his politics. He’s falling victim to political posturing, and there’s no excuse for that when it comes to children.”

As of Friday, 28 other states and six other U.S. territories and Native American tribes had confirmed their participation, according to the USDA.

These 5 charts show how life got pricier, but also cheaper, in 2023 & MERYL STREEP

These 5 charts show how life got pricier, but also cheaper, in 2023

For our wallets and the U.S. economy, 2023 was in many ways the year life began to look more like it did before the pandemic.

The American shopping frenzy slowed and credit card debt inched up, while the labor market continued to hum along and unemployment remained near historic lows. Prices continued to climb but at a slower pace, and by year's end wage growth was outpacing inflation.

How does it all add up? Here are some of the ways our lives got both pricier and cheaper in 2023.

Breakfast

Supermarket sticker shock eased this year, and some grocery prices are actually declining. Last year's eye-popping costs of eggs (due to bird flu) and butter (due to lower dairy production) have finally come down. So have coffee and sugar costs. Let them eat cake! (Or at least scrambled eggs.) Frozen orange juice is still expensive, because of weak production in Florida and Brazil, but overall, grocery prices in November were up a modest 1.7% compared to a year ago. The previous year, grocery prices had soared by 12%.

Adulting

Housing costs continued to climb this year, but the worst could be behind us. Mortgage rates, which approached 8% in the fall, eased to an average of 6.67% in recent weeks. The average sales price for a home in November was up 4% from a year ago. Outstanding credit card debt rebounded this year, topping a trillion dollars after falling early in the pandemic. But hey, at least our savings rate is also climbing from rock-bottom levels. And to address that auto insurance price hike: Turns out, premiums are fueled by riskier drivers, natural disasters and costlier car parts.

Trips and entertainment

It's time to fly! The lower price of gasoline was a major driver of cooling inflation, and falling jet fuel prices helped lower the price of airplane tickets. Restaurant meals are still pricier because of higher costs of both food and wages, but we're still eating out a ton. Spending at restaurants and bars soared 11.3% in November compared to last year — more than double the increase in menu prices.

Work stuff

This was the year when higher wages finally caught up to and ever-so-slightly outpaced inflation. It was also a year of big strikes and big wins by established unions, although fledgling unions are still battling behemoths like Amazon and Starbucks for recognition. The labor market has shrugged off high-inflation woes and rising interest rates. Millions of people joined or rejoined the workforce this year, but the unemployment rate remains very low at 3.7%. It's early days, but ChatGPT has yet to take our jobs.

Big picture

While many forecasters expected rising interest rates to tip the U.S. economy into recession this year, we appear to have dodged that bullet. GDP grew at a relatively robust 2.9% in the 12 months ending in September, and it seems on track to keep growing as shoppers are spending through the holidays. Inflation is still higher than the 2% target set by the Federal Reserve. But Fed officials have signaled that they're probably done raising interest rates and may be ready to start cutting rates in the coming year. The prospect of lower borrowing costs cheered investors, pushing the stock market to near-record highs.

Methodology

Calculations rely on the latest data. Most compared November 2023 to November 2022. Credit card debt, student loan debt and unfair labor practices filings are from September, compared to a year earlier. S&P 500 and the dollar data are from Dec. 26, compared with a year earlier. The dollar value is measured against a basket of currencies using the U.S. Dollar Index.
