UNC faculty member killed in shooting said he had a troubled student

 

WRAL News spoke to a man who says he was a mentor to the UNC faculty member shot to death on campus Tuesday. .

Professor Zijie Yan was identified as the faculty victim in a deadly Monday shooting that sent the UNC-Chapel Hill campus into lockdown. He was the academic adviser of suspect Tailei Qi, according to a university web page. Yan, who was identified as the victim Tuesday in Orange County court documents, was an associate professor in the department of applied physical sciences, where he focused on nanoscience technology. He joined the faculty at UNC in 2019 after stints as an assistant professor at Clarkson University and a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Chicago, according to a university bio. He earned his PhD in materials engineering from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, New York.

Another gullible idiot faces prison for believing agitators like Trump, Biggs and Lake

Do you think former President Donald Trump or groupies like U.S. Rep. Andy Biggs and Kari Lake feel even a teeny tiny bit responsible when another gullible dope is sentenced to prison for threats against Arizona officials after falling for the conspiracy theories and BS about rigged elections?

Naah … me neither.

I’m guessing these political flamethrowers, and many like them all across the country, have convinced themselves that they have nothing to do with the intimidation, harassment and death threats that have rained down on the Maricopa County supervisors, Recorder Stephen Richer, Gov. Katie Hobbs and on and on.

On Monday, an Iowa man was sentenced to 2½ years in prison

 for threats against Supervisor Clint Hickman and former Arizona Attorney General Mark Brnovich.

Others will go to prison for death threats

Among other things, Mark Rissi left a voicemail message for Hickman saying in part, “You’re gonna die, you piece of [expletive]. We’re going to hang you. We’re going to hang you

.”

Yeah, not exactly the brightest bulb in the MAGA marquee.

This comes on the heels of a Massachusetts man who has pleaded guilty to sending a message to an Arizona government website warning then-Secretary of State Katie Hobbs to resign … “or the explosive device impacted in her personal space will be detonated

.”

This dope could get five years in the slammer.

And that came after a man enflamed by the conspiracy nonsense disseminated about Arizona’s elections was caught and sentenced to 3½ years in prison for threatening the lives and families

 of Richer and County Attorney’s Office Civil Division Chief Tom Liddy.

Trump made it OK to spew violent rhetoric

We know how this all got started.

At least we know how it all became accepted.

It became OK for Republicans to spew violent rhetoric the moment Trump scored big with the GOP base by talking about how Mexico was sending us drug dealers, criminals and rapists.

Since then, he has demonized just about everyone he views as a threat.

And that attitude has spread to his political sycophants like Biggs and Lake (and a whole bunch more.)

This explains why Biggs felt comfortable tweeting out after Trump was indicted, “We have now reached the war phase. Eye for an eye

.”

And it explains how Lake at a Republican Party gathering in Georgia said she had a message for Attorney General Merrick Garland, special counsel Jack Smith, President Joe Biden and the media.

What about Lake, others who spread lies?

Lake said, “If you want to get to President Trump, you’re going to have to go through me, and you’re going to have to go through 75 million Americans just like me. And I’m going to tell you, most of us are card-carrying members of the NRA. That’s not a threat, that’s a public service announcement

.”

That kind of vitriol has consequences. It puts good people at risk.

These ongoing prosecutions hopefully send a message to the dopes who fall for the lies.

But what about the politicians spreading the bogus conspiracies who inspire them?

They still don’t seem to have gotten any message.

How many stooges have to go to prison before the agitators back off?

Would that even happen if someone died?

Wait … don’t answer that.

Just pointing out that more than 2,700 Americans died of COVID-19 yesterday, and another 123,000 became infected. A few of you have asked if I could list how many of the cases and deaths are people who were unvaccinated. Unfortunately, states aren't consistent in how they track the vaccination status of those infected or who have died. Some Republican states don't track it publicly at all, because they know it will crush their false talking points about the virulence of this virus and the effectiveness of the vaccines. And Florida's governor, Ron DeSantis, months ago ordered his health department to stop reporting infections and deaths of anyone who isn't a full-time resident. Given that thousands of people spend some part of the winter in Florida, but not enough time to be considered full-time residents, the Florida numbers are dramatically undercounted, simply to enhance DeSantis's political fortunes. But in December, Time magazine checked the health websites of several states that publish stats on a regular basis. Some report the per-100,000-residents rate of hospital admissions: Minnesota: 117.8 unvaccinated, 8.8 vaccinated Connecticut: 68.6 unvaccinated, 4.6 vaccinated Utah: 56.7 unvaccinated, 4.4 vaccinated Colorado: 52.2 unvaccinated, 4.2 vaccinated Virginia: 39.6 unvaccinated, 1.6 vaccinated Other states reported the ratio of vaccinated vs. unvaccinated status among hospitalized patients. For example: Mississippi: 86 percent unvaccinated, 14 percent vaccinated Montana: 81 percent unvaccinated, 19 percent vaccinated South Carolina: 64 percent unvaccinated, 36 percent vaccinated The bottom line is that despite breakthrough infections among those who have been vaccinated (the vast majority of whom are immunocompromised or otherwise at high risk), this remains a pandemic of the unvaccinated. The good news is that one scientific model estimates that 73 percent of Americans are, for now, immune to omicron, the dominant variant, a number that could rise to 80 percent by mid-March. There certainly will be new surges in the future, given the versatility of this coronavirus to produce variants. But most of those who are protected will either not be infected or will have mild cases, which should reduce the amount of virus circulating overall and making new waves less deadly. We can only hope. BTW, forget herd immunity: The anti-vaxxers have killed that effective strategy. Vaccine-induced herd immunity stamped out polio and smallpox in the US, back when we had a much smarter population. Vaccines also eliminated measles as of 2000, but guess what? The anti-vaxxers brought that back, not caring that most of those who die of measles are children under age 5. Kids are disposable, I guess. Tempering that optimism about the future of more surges is the emerging variant dubbed BA.2 (omicron is BA.1). New research out of Japan -- which hasn't yet been peer-reviewed -- shows that the new variant is spreading faster than omicron and may cause more severe disease. The World Health Organization estimates that BA.2 is 30 percent more contagious than Omicron. Again, we have to rely on vaccines and masks to protect us against future surges. Many are in peril. It's so heartening to know that the overwhelming majority of Fast Forward readers care enough about their fellow Americans to take precautions (more of your comments below).
