Protecting democracy in the USA requires more than outrage -- it requires the Senate to use its power before it’s too late. Trump’s nomination of Senator Markwayne Mullin to lead the Department of Homeland Security is not a personnel decision. It is a political declaration: that loyalty to one man now outranks qualification, integrity, or the rule of law. Mullin is an election denier, an enforcer of mass deportation, and a committed opponent of congressional oversight -- precisely the traits that make him dangerous in this role. At People Power United, we are calling on every senator to reject this nomination and demand leadership that serves the Constitution, not the president who appointed them.

Mullin is a Republican junior senator from Oklahoma, a former House member, businessman, rancher, and former MMA fighter who arrived in the Senate in 2023 riding a wave of hard-right Trumpism.¹ He is an enrolled citizen of the Cherokee Nation -- only the second ever to serve in the Senate -- a distinction that makes his aggressive anti-immigrant enforcement record all the more striking. But his biography is not the issue. His record is.
Mullin has built his political identity around unwavering loyalty to Donald Trump and zero tolerance for accountability. He voted to align with election denial, pushed to expunge both of Trump’s impeachments from the Congressional Record -- a legally baseless stunt to rewrite history -- and has argued, repeatedly, that Congress has little legitimate role in checking presidential power. That is not a political philosophy. That is a recipe for unchecked executive rule.
On immigration, Mullin has championed legislation to massively expand ICE staffing and detention authority, gut legal protections for migrant children, fund thousands of new ICE agents, and accelerate Trump-style mass deportation. He does not believe current enforcement goes far enough. He believes any limit on enforcement -- from courts, Congress, or communities -- is an obstacle to eliminate. On abortion, he holds a “pro-life without exceptions” position, rejecting termination even in cases of rape, incest, or life-threatening medical emergencies.
This is the man Trump wants running the largest law enforcement agency in the United States, overseeing border security, cybersecurity, disaster response, and counterterrorism for over 260,000 employees.² The question is not whether Mullin is qualified. He is not. The question is whether the Senate will allow loyalty to substitute for competence -- and freedom over fascism demands the answer be no.
Trump fired Kristi Noem³ -- but firing one loyalist and replacing her with another is not reform. It is a cover-up. Mullin will enforce the same destructive policies with the same disregard for oversight, while the administration claims it has turned the page. The Senate must not be complicit in that fiction.
Advice and consent is a constitutional firewall. It exists precisely for moments like this. Senators who genuinely believe in institutional integrity, the rule of law, and the protection of immigrant rights must vote no -- and they must say publicly why. A qualified DHS secretary brings federal law enforcement or national security experience, a record of managing large institutions through crisis, and a demonstrated commitment to nonpartisan public service. Mullin brings none of these things. He brings a Twitter following and a plumbing business.
People Power United is calling on every senator to hold the line. Contact your senators today. Tell them that resist Project 2025 is not just a hashtag -- it is a mandate. Demand they vote no on Mullin and yes on an America where our most powerful security agencies are led by professionals, not political soldiers.
Mullin is not a reformer -- he is Trump’s enforcer, positioned to accelerate mass deportation and eliminate every check on executive power at DHS.
His record of election denial, impeachment erasure, and anti-oversight rhetoric disqualifies him from leading any agency that depends on nonpartisan public trust.
Replacing Noem with Mullin is cover, not change -- the lawless policies remain, only the face at the top of the agency shifts.
Protecting democracy in the USA means the Senate must use its constitutional power right now, before another loyalist is handed the keys to America’s largest law enforcement agency.
People Power United stands with every community threatened by a weaponized DHS -- and we will not stop organizing until qualified, accountable leadership is restored.
The Senate has a choice: fulfill its constitutional duty or rubber-stamp the continued weaponization of the Department of Homeland Security. If Mullin is confirmed, immigrant families, civil liberties, and the basic expectation of nonpartisan governance all lose. The stakes are that simple and that urgent.
