And just like that, it was gone. The East Wing of the White House has been demolished by Donald Trump and only Donald Trump. No hearings, no oversight, no input from anyone, just his desire to defile our nation’s most famous home with his trademark tackiness. The bulldozers didn’t show up at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue earlier this week by accident. This has been a secret, long-planned project often hinted at by Trump, but specifics were few until the wrecking ball started swinging. The construction of a new, massive White House ballroom, along with the unauthorized destruction of the East Wing, is the perfect, albeit appalling, metaphor for the trajectory of Donald Trump’s second term. In king-like fashion, Trump jumped into this building project, which he claims everyone wants, but no one has publicly asked for, with his usual don’t-bother-asking-for-permission zeal. To make room for his 90,000 square foot monstrosity, which will dwarf the existing White House at almost two times its size, he dismantled something that does not belong to him but to the American people. The White House was dubbed “The People’s House” during John Quincy Adams’s presidency, a building reflective of our representative republic. It belongs to all citizens, not just the ones living in it. Trump has filed no plans, received no permissions, and enlarged the footprint and the budget, increasing the cost by 50%. Major donors will foot the $300 million bill. The only reason we know the East Wing is being bulldozed is because Treasury Department employees, who work next door, defied a White House order by sharing photos taken from their offices of a national historic landmark being leveled. Until very recently, the East Wing was a 12,000 square foot, two-story structure connected to the main building by an arcade. It housed function rooms, the offices of the First Lady, the White House visitors’ office, the guest entrance, and an underground secure shelter. It was built in 1942, during Franklin Roosevelt’s second term. Prior to that addition, the East Terrace, a small structure that served as a formal visitors’ entrance, was added in 1902, before that a greenhouse occupied the space. On a personal note, among all of Trump’s outrageous acts, this one really hits home for this reporter. For the better part of 10 years, I worked in the CBS News workspace in the West Wing. So much of my own history and the country’s is entwined with the building.
Witnessing any part of its demolition is a gut punch. Trump crossed an invisible line by destroying something that wasn’t his to destroy. You could say that about so much of what he has done, but the visual of seeing a bulldozer taking down part of this national treasure was a painful reminder of how he and his administration works everyday at dismantling our democracy. I wish I could say I was surprised by any of this, but remember, this is the guy who paved over Jackie Kennedy’s rose garden to make it look like the patio of his Palm Beach resort. While Trump is razing an historic monument to make way for a gilded ballroom, he and his Republican toadies are not making good on the campaign promise to deal with the affordability crisis. Instead, they are enriching themselves and their friends at the expense of the American taxpayer. Kristi And The Jets A DHS spokesperson says the current plane Noem uses is old and in need of maintenance, even though a new, but not as fancy, jet was purchased in 2022, with an expected service life of 20 years. Argentine Tango He is propping up Argentine President Javier Milei, a right-wing political ally, at the expense of the people who elected him. Milei’s policies have pushed Argentina to the brink of yet another currency crisis. Trump is hoping his largess will allow Milei to prevail in his country’s midterm elections in November. Trump is Suing Himself (Sort of) Now, he believes he is entitled to compensation for those investigations. No idea how he came up with that inflated figure, but he will need one of his appointees to okay the payout. What are the chances? Shutdown Dragout Without the subsidy extensions, the average increase could be more than 100%. The Kaiser Family Foundation estimates someone paying $888 for coverage now will pay $1904 in 2026. But these estimates will become reality very soon, because open enrollment starts in just over a week. With people beginning to get letters and emails outlining the unsubsidized costs, congressional Republicans will be under greater pressure to make a deal. Two Things Can Be True At The Same Time For the one-percenters, things are rosy. Tech investment is boosting an already hot stock market. GDP is humming along. And employment is robust. The rich are getting richer. For the rest of the country, things aren’t looking great. Some leading indicators are pointing toward recession:
America’s real-time economic dashboard is now built on the flimsy foundation of repo lots, pawnshop counters, and GoFundMe pages, because the government’s data is slow to materialize or nonexistent. Forget regression models, this is recession modeling. All of this makes the idea of a big, ugly ballroom paid for by influence-seeking billionaires all the more appalling. The destruction of part of “The People’s House” is symbolic of the damage this president is wreaking, such as extorting his own government and approving luxury jets for his cabinet, while making life more difficult for most Americans

Today in Politics, Bulletin 234. 10/23/25… Trump has now demolished the entire East Wing of the WH. NYT: “The scope of the demolition, and Trump’s repeated promises that the WH itself would not be affected by the work, were in many ways symbolic of how he has conducted his presidency. On a variety of issues, Trump has blown past norms and traditions, often moving so quickly that it can be too late for courts, Congress or the public to catch up.” … “The ballroom is only the latest renovation plan that Trump has undertaken since he took office for the second time. He is also leaving his mark on the Oval Office, which now features many gilded flourishes. He also paved over the Rose Garden; erected huge flag poles on the WH grounds; and is planning to build an arch in front of Arlington National Cemetery in the style of the Arc de Triomphe.” … Trump: “After really a tremendous amount of study with some of the best architects in the world, we determined that really knocking it down, trying to use a little section. The East Wing was not much. There was not much left from the original.” … Trump on July 31 when he was first asked about the ballroom: “It won’t interfere with the current building. It will be near it but not touching it, and pays total respect to the existing building, which I’m the biggest fan of. It’s my favorite. It’s my favorite place. I love it.” … Reporter: “Many people were surprised the entire East Wing is being demolished, because you had said initially that the ballroom would just touch… Trump interrupting: It was a very small building, so we did it rather than allowing that to hurt a very expensive, beautiful building that frankly they’ve been after for years. I decided it will be one of the great ballrooms of the world.” … Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt was asked about it today: Q - “The president initially said that this project wouldn’t interfere with or touch the current structure. Leavitt: If you look at the renderings, it’s very clear the east wing was going to be modernized. Reporter: But modernizing and tearing down are two different things.” … Q - “Can the President tear down anything he wants without oversight? Can he demolish this building or the Jefferson Memorial? Leavitt: There have been many presidents in the past who have made their mark on this beautiful WH complex. Reporter: So it sounds like the answer is yes, he can tear down whatever he wants.” … Rep. Jeff Merkley (D-OR) on MSNBC: “What we have seen around the world is that democracies no longer die because men with guns go in and take it over. Instead, it’s electeds who erode the separation of power, checks and balances. If you have a rubber-stamp Congress, if you have a court that delivers more power to the executive, suddenly you have lost your democracy and you have an authoritarian state structure. It’s here now.” … Leavitt concluded with this: “At this moment in time, the ballroom is really the president’s main priority.” … House Dem Leader Hakeem Jeffries immediately released Leavitt’s statement as part of an ad: “Millions of Americans will see their health insurance costs skyrocket in just over a week. But Trump’s spokesperson says the White House ballroom is the President’s top priority.” … Sen. Chuck Schumer responded to Leavitt’s comment: “Honestly, you can’t make this shit up.” … Gavin Newsom: “Good to know.” … Honestly, it was a stupid (but truthful) comment with horrendous timing (shutdown) that would get most Press Secretaries fired. But, as Trump likes to say, she never will be because “those lips move like a machine gun.” … Don Jr on Fox: “A construction guy, a guy that’s known for building luxury, is actually improving the WH with private funding. To be able to do the deals around the world that are needed, to create more jobs and trade deals you need something like this. This is for the betterment of the property.” … Trump was asked today about the money he has raised for it from corporate donors (full list at the end of the Bulletin): Q - “Have you raised the full $300 million to fund your ballroom? Trump: Yeah. Actually, we raised I think $350 million.” … First he said it would cost $200 million. Then he went to $250 million. Then it was $300 million. Now it is $350 million. … When he was asked how much he personally was going to contribute (he originally said he was going to pay for all of it himself), he refused to give a specific numbers and just said, “we’ll see.”

But when you look at signs and they’re all made beautifully, they’re all made professionally in a printing shop. Guillen’s co-counsel was Ches McDowell, a longtime hunting companion of Donald Trump, Jr.” … Trump was asked about it today: Q - “Today you pardoned the founded of Binance. Can you explain why you did that? Trump: Which one was that? Q - The founder of Binance. Trump: I pardon a lot of people. I don’t know. He was recommended by a lot of people.” … Leavitt was asked about it today: Q - On the pardon, Binance has significant business interests with the President’s family’s crypto company. How do you respond to allegations that this is a corrupt act? Leavitt: The President is exercising his constitutional authority to grant clemency requests. This was an overly prosecuted case by the Biden admin.” … FBI Director Kash Patel announced indictments today of NBA players and coaches in a gambling ring: “This is an operation that showcases to you that under Trump’s admin, there is no room for any type of criminal behavior, be in on the world’s largest stage or in the back rooms of tiny parlors where card games were being played.” … Ag Secretary Brooke Rollins was asked about the frustration of cattle ranchers that Trump is importing beef from Argentina. She said Trump is upset at them for being ungrateful: “There is frustration on both sides. I was with the president yesterday and he is very very frustrated because everything he’s done to cut taxes, bring down costs. The last admin worked to get cattle off the lands. They were worried about climate change. And this president has worked so hard.” … Sen. Maj. Leader John Thune told Semafor that Trump’s efforts to bring down beef prices this way is misguided: ““This isn’t the way to do it. It’s created a lot of uncertainty in that market. So I’m hoping that the White House has gotten the message.” … “Thune hails from SD, a major beef-producing state, and he’s joined by a long line of fellow cattle-conscious Republicans in warning the president and his admin against the import plan. GOP senators have raised the issue to the Dept of Ag, WH advisers, and Trump himself - but so far, the president is digging in despite the red-state concerns.” … NPR: “The president of the American Farm Bureau warned the WH last week that more than half of US farms are losing money, threatening small towns and rural economies. Court records show farm bankruptcies in the 12 months ending in June were up 56% from the previous year. And that ominous trend has continued.” … Joseph Peiffer, an attorney who handles bankruptcy cases for farmers in IL, IA, and MO: “We had five new farm cases in two weeks. That’s astonishing. Shocking. And we’re getting additional calls all the time.” … Rep. Marge Greene on Tucker Carlson’s podcast: “This $40B bailout for Argentina-- that’s one of the grossest things I have ever seen. I have no idea who is telling the president that this is a good idea. It’s a punch in the gut to all our American cattle ranchers. I will give Trump this: despite talking about running for president for decades, he was cunning enough to wait until a time in American history when a big percentage of the population couldn’t care less about naked, blatant and obscene corruption and criminality on a daily basis. When I first got into politics, it was a major scandal if a candidate admitted smoking marijuana in college. Seems like a thousand years ago. … A Christian music star who was recruited to sing the national anthem at a Trump rally in 2022 and posed for photos with Trump after has been arrested on charges of possessing and producing child pornography. Jon Sheptock served as the worship minister at the First Montgomery Baptist Church in Texas. Detectives first tried to arrest the singer at his home in Sept but were unable to find him. They eventually caught up with him while he was working at a local women’s prison where he served as a minister.” … WaPo on Pete Hegseth’s new Pentagon Press Corps after everyone else refused to agree to his new rules: “It includes streaming service Lindell TV (started by MyPillow CEO and Trump ally Mike Lindell), the websites the Gateway Pundit, the Post Millennial, Human Events, and the National Pulse. ICE officials only later discovered that some of the recruits failed drug testing, have disqualifying criminal backgrounds or don’t meet the physical or academic requirements to serve.” … “Staff members at ICE’s training academy in Brunswick, GA, recently discovered one recruit had previously been charged with strong-arm robbery and battery stemming from a domestic violence incident. Netanyahu has control over the majority in the Knesset and could have stopped the vote by taking it off the agenda or ordering the members of his party to vote against it. He chose not to in order to avoid a confrontation with his ultranationalist coalition partners.” … Vance: “It was a very stupid political stunt, and I personally take some insult to it. The West Bank is not gonna be annexed by Israel.” … Penn Star: “Sen. John Fetterman’s third quarter haul is his lowest fundraising total over a three-month stretch since he announced his candidacy for the office in February 2021. From July-Sept, Fetterman’s campaign raised just under $330,000 and spent $575,000. … “It’s the third consecutive quarter where Fetterman’s campaign spent more than it raised. His campaign used $1.54 million, while gaining $1.23 million so far this year. At this point in 2024, his campaign raised $2.85 million, which is double the amount of his current 2025 totals.” … “During Fetterman’s successful run in 2022, he was a prolific fundraiser, bringing in $73.9 million on his way to flipping the open-seat blue over Republican Mehmet Oz.” … Christopher Borick, director of Muhlenberg College’s Institute of Public Opinion: “It’s a sign of his tenuous position right now among his party’s financial supporters, who might have lots of questions about exactly where he’s at politically right now.” … The New Republic interviewed Judiciary Committee ranking member Jamie Raskin on Trump’s $230 million lawsuit scam. Raskin said that DOJ could settle the case and have the govt pay Trump without immediate disclosure to the public: “Our reading is that, even though this is a private settlement, it doesn’t have to be disclosed anywhere until there is an accounting of where all the money has gone at the end of the year.” … “This is because Trump is seeking these payments via an internal DOJ administrative claims process, which is typically confidential. Though any payments would come out eventually in a later report to Congress, a payment could be made confidentially well before DOJ makes a public disclosure.” … Raskin: “The domestic emoluments clause says the president may not receive any compensation at all from the US govt or the states beyond his official salary. This means he cannot be ordering govt officials to write checks to the president.” … “Raskin said he will demand internal communications between the WH and DOJ, including with Todd Blanche himself, about these claims, and any communications indicating that Trump is pressing DOJ to make the payment or shedding light on DOJ deliberations about it.” … Here is a list of the people and companies who are financing Trump’s destruction of the White House:
