Real Justice PAC: Look at this. 👀

Real Justice

LOOK AT THIS. At every turn they are dirty:

And since Chesa Boudin was recalled in San Francisco by corrupt conservatives, we have a terrible District Attorney – Brooke Jenkins – who is doing everything she can to ensure that violent police get away with murder.

It’s despicable. And it’s utter hypocrisy that she ran her campaign on false messages claiming to care about crime.

Read and then share this news far and wide so that people can understand the truth about corrupt police and district attorneys – and get ready to make change in the next election cycle.

Here are a few more articles to read:

  • Mission Local: “DA Jenkins committed misconduct in murder trial, Court of Appeal finds.” Read it here.
  • San Francisco Chronicle: “S.F. D.A.’s office is disqualified from prosecuting murder case following Jenkins’ comments.” Read it here.
  • SF Standard: “Claim Accuses San Francisco District Attorney of Lying To Protect Cop.” Read it here.

Thanks for taking the time,

Shaun

Overheard at the police academy…

Real Justice

One thing that police departments and officers hate is accountability. It’s exactly what we learned when Chesa Boudin sent someone through a 22-week training at the police academy.

The findings are SHOCKING. These are some of the most disgusting and unbelievable anecdotes we’ve heard from police — and this was just as they were TRAINING.

The quotes we are going to share make it clear that the culture of violence, misogyny, and bigotry runs DEEP within police departments.

When we worked hard to elect Chesa Boudin as San Francisco DA in 2017, he did exactly what he promised when he came into office: to implement real police accountability.

And he was hated for it.

That hatred wasn’t just passive. Instructors and officers in the police academy made their animosity toward Chesa very clear — even engrained it in training at times.

From mistreating cadets in the academy to bad-mouthing Chesa and discrediting credible courses about implicit bias, this journal goes in depth about the problems with policing.

Will you take some time out of your day to read and share this article to truly understand why we need to transform the system of policing in the United States? We need you, the people, to know exactly what is going on in the police academies and behind closed doors because when cops commit egregious crimes, it’s our communities that suffer.

The anecdotes that this investigator exposed from his time at the academy are simply outrageous. Let’s highlight just a few out of the dozens we could share:

He explained how instructors tell the class they are being forced to teach about implicit bias — which studies show is a big reason why Black people are stopped more often by police and also shot more often than white people. The instructors even go as far as to say that implicit biases are fake concepts invented by “woke ANTIFA liberals.”

This cadet also shed light on the lack of teachings about the fundamental principle of innocence until proven guilty. One of the instructors even declared that cops should have the right to kill folks because they are preventing crime by eliminating them.

This is the current training of policing in America: no due process, just kill folks if you deem they are bad guys. They even coined the term “tennis shoe tax” which refers to the beating after someone made cops chase after them — like how Memphis police officers beat Tyre Nichols even harder after he tried to escape their assault.

These are just a few of the journal entries which highlight the violent, racist, and misogynistic culture of police departments in the U.S. And it also reveals how police officers hated Chesa Boudin because he worked to hold them accountable when they committed violence. It’s why the SF police union was so adamant in recalling him, and why the new DA is now rolling back all of Chesa’s efforts for police accountability.

Whether police officers like it or not, the consequences of their crimes are human lives, and that’s why we need to keep working to elect DAs who will hold them accountable and also implement real public safety solutions to stop police violence before it happens.

So, will you please take the time to read this journal for yourself to get a birds eye-view on the issues with policing in America today and share it with others?

Thank you for taking action,

Real Justice

SF Standard: Interim DA Jenkins Pocketed Six Figures as Consultant for Nonprofit Linked to Boudin Recall Backers

Hi, it’s Chesa Boudin. I hope you’re having a safe and enjoyable summer.

I’m writing to you about a troubling news story that broke this week. Take a look at this headline:

Newly filed ethics records show that Interim DA Jenkins raked in more than $100,000 as a consultant for the ‘non-profit’ arm of the recall effort.

This is shocking news as Jenkins repeatedly claimed she was a “volunteer,” not an employee of the recall effort. She used her status as a “volunteer” to convince voters to trust her, when the whole time she was being secretly paid. In addition to being dishonest, it’s unethical: federal tax law prohibits 501(c)(3) non-profit organizations from participating in such political activity.

It’s also a blatant contradiction of Jenkins’s claim that she is a “progressive Democrat.” A progressive would not be paid by William Oberndorf, the right-wing GOP mega donor who bankrolled the recall effort.

And that’s not all. If the so-called "non-profit' paid Jenkins more than $100,000 to provide services to the recall effort, the recall campaign was required to declare that as an in-kind contribution, something it did not do.

All of this stinks of corruption, and highly unethical behavior. The people of San Francisco deserve better.

My administration made sure that no one was above the law. We sought to combat corruption and hold the rich and powerful accountable. That is work I am committed to continuing.

So today, I’m asking you to join me in calling on the SF Ethics Commission to investigate the ties between Jenkins, people in her administration, and the recall effort and demand full disclosure of the funds paid and received to them during the campaign.

Brooke Jenkins failed to meet the standards the people of San Francisco deserve, and these activities are unbecoming of the office of District Attorney.

It’s clear the people of San Francisco want accountability and transparency for their leaders. That includes appointed DA Jenkins.

Thank you for reading,

Chesa Boudin

POLITICO NIGHTLY: How clean is Democrats’ clean energy plan?

View in browser

POLITICO Nightly logo

BY JOSH SIEGEL AND KELSEY TAMBORRINO

Presented by

United for Clean Power, Inc.

With help from Joanne Kenen.

RUNNING ON E — Sen. Joe Manchin of West Virginia, a proud fossil fuel-state Democrat, shocked the world by putting his name last week to the biggest climate spending package in U.S. history.

Manchin’s surprise agreement with Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer has paved the way for a series of critical votes this weekend on one of President Joe Biden’s signature domestic aid bills.

But as significant as the bill is — $369 billion investment in climate and clean energy — Democrats once again found how difficult it is to restrain fossil fuels, which still largely power the economy, as opposed to boosting clean energy.

Democrats were forced to lean on a carrots-over-sticks approach, mostly focusing on expanding clean energy tax subsidies in lieu of a carbon tax or other penalties on polluters — measures that have proven politically dangerous for Democrats. And Manchin extracted what some have called “Easter eggs” for oil and gas companies — to the chagrin of climate activists.

Manchin also secured a commitment from Democratic leadership to pass legislation later this year to speed up energy permitting, which would help developers build oil and gas pipelines and green infrastructure projects faster.

Despite the concessions to the oil and gas industry — and to Manchin — the deal shows that the right combination of incentives and subsidies, rather than a punitive approach, can grease the way for environmental progress.

The bill, if passed, would be a major victory for Biden and Democrats who suffered a serious setback at the hands of the Supreme Court in June, issuing a ruling limiting the federal government’s authority to regulate carbon emissions from power plants.

It could help generate new enthusiasm from Democratic voters — especially young climate activists whose support helped carry him into office, but who had grown frustrated with the administration’s lack of success over its climate agenda.

Manchin and Democrats rebranded the compromise legislation, dubbed the Inflation Reduction Act, as a long-term anecdote to high prices by making the U.S. less dependent on volatile fossil fuel prices.

The $369 billion for clean energy and climate in the bill is less than the $555 billion in Biden’s earlier Build Back Better legislation passed by the House, and much less than the $2 trillion he campaigned on.

“This bill is very much a compromise and it is hard fought,” said Tiernan Sittenfeld, senior vice president of governmental affairs with the League of Conservation Voters, an environmental group. “It is also the single-biggest thing our country will have ever done to combat the climate crisis.”

Early analyses of the plan are positive for Democrats — and the future of the planet.

The bill’s hefty tax incentives for low-carbon technologies could enable the country to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions by roughly 40 percent below 2005 levels by the end of this decade, according to research published today by Princeton University’s REPEAT Project. That falls just short of Biden’s goal to cut U.S. emissions by at least 50 percent below 2005 levels by 2030.

The tax incentives would remain on the books for a decade, providing certainty to clean energy developers who have faced a series of lapses — and subsequent renewals — for a shorter time frame.

They would also expand to new technologies, such as energy storage and direct air capture, and some of the incentives would be eligible for “direct pay,” a main demand made by clean energy companies, allowing them to monetize credits upfront without relying on banks to finance them, although the bill stops short of providing the option for the broad span of tax credits that advocates had called for.

And the bill doles out subsidies to make clean technologies that have not been widely adopted cheaper for American consumers, such as electric vehicles and heat pumps.

FROM THE HEALTH DESK

THE COVID ONE TWO SHUFFLE — Positive. Negative. Positive.

For Biden, his top medical adviser Anthony Fauci and an uncertain number of other Americans, that’s the cadence of Covid Rebound, Joanne Kenen , Commonwealth Fund journalist-in-residence at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, emailed Nightly.

Both men have been vaccinated and boosted but developed breakthrough cases. Given their age, both were prescribed the five-day regimen of the antiviral Paxlovid.

Both recovered, testing negative. The virus rebounded a few days later. Biden is in isolation, again.

To find out more about Covid rebound, I talked to Bob Wachter, a Covid expert and professor at the UCSF medical school. Based on early clinical trials, rebound Covid only happens between two and five percent of the time in people treated with Paxlovid. But many doctors, Wachter among them, suspect that’s an undercount.

“That feels like a ‘don’t believe your eyes number,’” Wachter told me. Ten to 15 percent is probably more realistic, he said, but as it’s not being systematically studied, it’s hard to know.

There’s also been inadequate study of Paxlovid dosing. The drug is definitely safe and effective, reducing the risk of hospitalization or death by around 90 percent. But is five days enough?

Wachter and many other doctors want to see studies comparing the five-day protocol to ten days, or perhaps seven.

Cones outside the White House.

Rebound cases are usually milder than the initial case; the White House says Biden’s case was picked up by routine testing, not because of a return of symptoms.

Still, there are several things Wachter worries about.

First, people who appear to be “over” Covid but have a silent rebound can spread the virus. That means that people who have recovered but who live with or come into close contact with a high risk or immunocompromised person should test for rebound if “the consequences of turning infectious would be dire,” he said.

Second, he worries that the rebound phenomenon will spawn yet another set of covid myths, discouraging people who could benefit from the drug from seeking a prescription. That’s similar to people shunning the Covid vaccine or boosters because the shot is less protective against infection, although it’s still very good at protecting people from serious illness.

And, some doctors are already not prescribing Paxlovid, or using it too sparingly. The rebound phenomenon could exacerbate that, creating more barriers to treatment.

Wachter thinks the data warrants offering Paxlovid to people over 60 infected with Covid, vaccinated or unvaccinated, as well as those over 40 with significant risk factors. Even if it’s not perfect, he said, “people are safer with it than without it.”

The former San Francisco district attorney announced today that he would not run to wrest back the seat he lost in a June recall election , averting a second bruising clash over criminal justice. Voters ousted Boudin by a broad ten-point margin, vindicating recall backers who argued the progressive prosecutor had undermined public safety with overly lenient charging decisions.

A video of Brittney Griner hearing her prison sentence.

NINE YEARS — Biden said today that the guilty verdict and nine-year sentence handed by a Russian court to American basketball star Brittney Griner is “unacceptable,” calling for her immediate release.

“My administration will continue to work tirelessly and pursue every possible avenue to bring Brittney and Paul Whelan home safely,” Biden said.

Attention is now expected to turn to the possibility of a high-stakes prisoner swap proposed by the Biden administration that would involve both Griner and Whelan, a former U.S. Marine detained in 2018 in Russia on espionage charges. The proposed trade would also include Russian arms dealer Viktor Bout.

Secretary of State Anthony Blinken noted that the length of Griner’s sentence — for smuggling cannabis oil — “further compounds the injustice of her wrongful detention.”

‘MISCALCULATION AND MISPERCEPTION’ — The Pentagon has directed the aircraft carrier USS Ronald Reagan to remain in the area near Taiwan “to monitor the situation” as China launches missiles in the region, writes Olivia Olander.

In addition, the U.S. has delayed a planned test of a Minuteman III intercontinental ballistic missile to avoid increasing tensions, National Security Council spokesperson John Kirby told reporters today.

“As China engages in destabilizing military exercises around Taiwan, the United States is demonstrating instead the behavior of a responsible nuclear power, by reducing the risks of miscalculation and misperception,” Kirby said of the decision, which comes amid House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s visit to Taiwan. Beijing has kicked off live-fire exercises, launching missiles over Taiwan and positioning warships around the island.

NIGHTLY NUMBER

6,600

The amount of monkeypox cases that have been reported in the United States, a number that has sharply risen in recent weeks. The Biden administration today declared monkeypox a public health emergency , as critics and health experts accuse the White House of failing to mount an aggressive push to distribute treatments and vaccines.

PARTING WORDS

DEEP DIVE ON SBF — Elena Scheider has a story out today on crypto billionaire Sam Bankman-Fried, who has jumped into national politics head-first:

One of the biggest donors in Democratic politics this year isn’t sure if he really wants to be a Democratic megadonor — at least not on the party’s terms. But then, part of life as Sam Bankman-Fried is about embracing paradoxes.

The 30-year-old, who has amassed an estimated $20 billion fortune over the last four years through cryptocurrency, drives a hybrid Toyota Corolla. A monk-like aesthetic extends from his clothes — he showed up to chat in a wrinkled T-shirt and beat-up New Balance sneakers — to his personal life. He shares a penthouse with about 10 roommates and cooks for himself. He still uses his parents’ Netflix account. When he lobbies in Washington, D.C., he’ll often crash on his brother’s couch.

He was also one of just a handful of donors who spent $10 million-plus backing Biden in 2020, and in the last year, he’s hired a network of political operatives and spent tens of millions more shaping Democratic House primaries. It was a shocking wave of spending that looked like it could remake the Democratic Party bench in Washington, candidate by candidate.

Looking ahead to the 2024 election, he has said he could spend anywhere from $100 million to $1 billion. The head-spinning speed of Bankman-Fried’s entrance onto the national political scene kicked off a race in Washington to understand him and define him — as a potential Democratic savior, a head-scratching mystery or, occasionally, a corrupt crypto bogeyman. Candidates, consultants and members of Congress are all eager to direct the millions he’s spending. And Bankman-Fried seemingly wandered into the middle of the Democratic Party and pulled out his wallet at the exact moment when many Democratic megadonors are pulling back, all ahead of a blistering midterm environment. Read the full story .

SF DA supports expanding police and violating privacy

Real Justice

Yesterday, we told you about the new San Francisco DA Brooke Jenkins, the leader of the recall campaign who was just appointed by Mayor London Breed, firing 15 of San Francisco's brightest attorneys.

But it gets worse.

Brooke Jenkins also supports legislation that would expand the SFPD’s ability to tap into the live feeds of privately owned security cameras, including doorbells, to investigate misdemeanors.

It’s a HUGE invasion of privacy and will be used to make the city even more of a police state than it already is. ⁣
⁣
This would literally mean police, from their own offices, could tap into home cameras all over the city.⁣

It’s OUTRAGEOUS and it’s shameful that ANY leaders would ever agree to such foolishness — but these are the consequences of conservative billionaires and the police union spending over $6 MILLION to lie to San Francisco voters and recall Chesa.

And if we don’t act now, civil liberties across the country could be at stake if even more progressive DAs are pushed out by powerful campaigns started by Republicans to advance their own agenda.

That’s why we need to fight back and prepare starting immediately. Will you make a donation to our DA Defense Fund so we can protect more DAs who might be the next target of conservative mega-donors?

That’s not all.

Brooke Jenkins is planning to prosecute people for drug use and paraphernalia by reviewing drug cases to reverse plea deal offers made under Chesa’s office.

This path of prosecuting people with addiction, has been proven to NOT reduce drug use.

Her office has already filed more standalone charges for possession of drug paraphernalia than have been filed in San Francisco in the past 11 years. Jenkins claims she has nothing to do with it and will withdraw them, but only backtracked after the media began reporting on it.

It’s clear that she and her political allies, including the Mayor, are HELLBENT on erasing any kind of reform Chesa and his office were working on for the people of San Francisco.

We can’t let this happen in ANY other city. The only way to do that is by working NOW to protect our DAs and the incredible folks they bring into their office to work towards reform.

With anything you can afford, make a donation right now to our so we can protect our pro-choice and pro-justice DAs with our DA Defense Fund.

In solidarity,

Real Justice

The new SF DA already fired 15 PEOPLE

Real Justice

Fifteen of San Francisco's brightest attorneys were fired by the HORRIBLE new DA Brooke Jenkins — the leader of the recall campaign who was just appointed by Mayor London Breed.

Right away Brooke began firing ANYBODY in the office who was there to hold police accountable, free innocent people, or even hold the Mayor’s own family accountable. ⁣

Brooke literally fired the staff that prosecuted the Mayor’s brother for killing someone. ⁣

I’m furious because these aren’t Republicans but sellout Democrats that are making decisions that will set back meaningful reforms in San Francisco for generations.

This is NOT about safety. Not at all.

This is what happens when we can't protect our progressive DAs — and conservative mega-donors are already targeting our leaders like Larry Krasner in Philadelphia and George Gascón in Los Angeles.

We need to act IMMEDIATELY and put up the defenses before they even have a chance to set up the kind of campaign they did in San Francisco. Please, I’m begging you, make a donation right now to our DA Defense Fund so we can protect our pro-choice and pro-justice DAs.

I want you to see some of the names and work that DA Brooke Jenkins SACKED. These were staff members and attorneys, dedicated folks helping the people of San Francisco:

  • Kate Chatfield, Chief of Staff
  • Rachel Marshall, Communications Director
  • Arcella Hurtado, Head of the Post-conviction Review Unit who also worked on the Innocence Commission. She was also the highest ranking Latina and LGBTQ+ member of the office
  • Lateef Grey and Rebecca Young from the Independent Investigations Bureau who held police and other public officials accountable
  • Kasie Lee, the first Cantonese-speaking assistant DA and head of Victim Services
  • Dana Dru and Stephanie Lacambra, who were in the Post-conviction Unit and helped release 70 people who were in prison for decades and showed growth and rehabilitation
  • Seth Meisels, who oversaw the investigation into fencing operations responsible for many car break-ins and fought to protect the rights of women seeking abortions and their doctors
  • Tal Klement, the Assistant Chief of General Crimes who fought for the rights of victims and the disabled. He and Seth sounded the alarm when they found out that SFPD illegally used the DNA of rape victims
  • Renowned data scientists including Mikaela Rabinowitz, who was the Director of Data, Analytics and Research and Dylan Yep, who was working to fight racial disparities in the system
  • Ryan Khotjasteh, who fought to preserve juvenile justice reforms so that kids aren’t charged as adults

Let me be clear: There were UNJUST terminations.

It’s disgusting and one of the single most shameful things I’ve seen in my life as a leader.

When London Breed appointed Brooke Jenkins to be the new DA, they didn’t have to do all of this.

They are DESTROYING all reform and firing GOOD people for no reason.

Conservative billionaires and the police union made this possible by spending MILLIONS to get Chesa’s recall on the ballot and spread lies to voters all across San Francisco.

We need to make sure this never happens again and the only way to do that is by working NOW to protect our DAs and the incredible folks they bring into their office to work towards reform.

Chip in to our DA Defense fund now to make sure we have the resources to fight back and defend our DAs.

Love and appreciate you,

Shaun

$65 per vote

Hi, it's Chesa Boudin.

I’ve had a few weeks to think and reflect on the last two campaigns we fought together -- starting with the 2019 campaign for District Attorney and culminating with the recall election earlier this month.

I decided to run for D.A. because I was determined to build a broad, diverse, and strong coalition of nurses, teachers, labor leaders, and more to break the cycle of violence and mass incarceration in San Francisco. And though we came up short in the recall election, I’m still proud of what we accomplished together.

I’m also mindful of the fact that not only were we outspent in this most recent election by a factor of 3:1, but we also had no tangible opponent, making it very difficult to define our opposition.

Voters were given an opportunity to express their frustration (an emotion we all feel about crime), and they took it.

But I want to remind you that the recall effort spent ten times more than what our campaign spent on the entire 2019 election. And despite that, we won about 15,000 more votes against the recall than when I was elected 2.5 years ago.

Here’s what that means: Our support has grown -- criminal justice reform is alive and well, and there are still hundreds of thousands of San Franciscans in our city who want to see an end to the ‘lock-em-up’ policies of the past.

In 2019, our campaign spent about $9 for every vote cast for me. Compare that to the $65 per vote that the recall spent to win this month, and I’d say we have a bright future ahead.

But I still need your help to wind down our campaign, retire debt, and begin our efforts to pick ourselves off the mat. So, I’m asking: Will you donate $65, or whatever amount is meaningful to you, and help send a message that our city and our movement are NOT for sale?

The right-wing billionaires and police unions that outspent us 3:1 aren’t going to stop fighting either, so now is not the time to give up.

Thanks so much for your help.

Onward,

Chesa Boudin

Chesa Boudin was elected District Attorney of San Francisco in 2019 to reform our criminal justice system. Now, right-wingers  want to reverse our progress and return our city to a time when innocent people were locked away and police acted with impunity.

Please chip in today to keep up the fight to reform San Francisco's criminal justice system.
