Charles Pierce, Esquire
Pierce writes: "That didn't work last time, and Maggie Haberman was right to report Donald Trump is saying he'll be restored to the presidency."

ormally, I do not pay a lot of attention to Sub-Left’nant Blimp of the National Review, but I figure that his sources on the Right are better than mine, so I present without comment the latest installment of The Adventures of Captain Crazypants and His Howling Morons.

Two days ago, the New York Times’s Maggie Haberman reported that Donald Trump “has been telling a number of people he’s in contact with that he expects he will get reinstated by August.” In response, many figures on the right inserted their fingers into their ears and started screaming about fake news.

Instead, they should have listened — because Haberman’s reporting was correct. I can attest, from speaking to an array of different sources, that Donald Trump does indeed believe quite genuinely that he — along with former senators David Perdue and Martha McSally — will be “reinstated” to office.

At the time Haberman reported this, too many people lost their minds. Of course, this has news value. If the most immediate former president* has gone this cuckoo bananas, and is already planning to crank up his wankfests again, that’s a helluva story. It’s possible that both Haberman and the Sub Left’nant are getting this from Republicans pleading with the world to rescue them from the stubby little clutches of the former president*. Considering that the Republicans in the Congress are doing everything they can to sustain the damage his administration did to, well, everything, I find it hard to summon up much sympathy in that case.

But, whatever its source, there is absolutely no question that we have a right to know this particular detail. If he shows up on the 12th at Bedminster with his body painted blue and bellowing about His Imperial Majesty, surely nobody would begrudge us the video. Like it or not, he’s a force in the political world until proven otherwise, if only because the rest of the Republican Party is terrified of crossing him. His daughter-in-law, rumored to be the next member of the family to run for a political office for which they're utterly unqualified, says she’s not concerned about the possibility of a Restoration in August. Neither is anyone else, but that’s not the point. There is still a level of dangerous mischief he can play in a country just now coming out of the pandemic and his towering misrule. That’s news, folks. You may recall how well “Ignore him and he’ll go away” worked as a strategy a mere six years ago. Democracy is a slow-moving target right now.

$150 billion of oil money has been stolen from Iraq since the US-led invasion of 2003
by Countercurrents Collective

An estimated $150 billion of stolen money has been smuggled out of Iraq in corrupt
deals since the US-led invasion of Iraq in 2003, Iraqi President Barham Salih said Sunday.

An estimated $150 billion of stolen money has been smuggled out of Iraq in corrupt deals since the US-led invasion of Iraq in 2003, Iraqi President Barham Salih said Sunday.

CNN and The New Arab reports said:

“Of the close to a thousand billion dollars made from oil since 2003, an estimated $150 billion of stolen money has been smuggled out of Iraq,” Salih said in a televised speech.

The statement came as the Iraqi President submitted a draft Corrupt Funds Recovery Act to the Iraqi Parliament.

“The draft law seeks to strengthen the powers of Iraqi nation in order to recover money stolen in corrupt deals, to hold corrupt people accountable and bring them to justice,” according to Salih.

He urged Iraqi lawmakers to discuss and approve the proposed legislation “to help curb this dangerous scourge that has deprived our people of enjoying the wealth of their country for many years.”

Salih said the stolen money would be enough to significantly improve Iraq’s finances.

According to Salih, the legislation would seek to recover the misappropriated funds through the cooperation of other governments and in partnership with international bodies.

“Here I reiterate Iraq’s call, which we have previously issued at the United Nations General Assembly, for the formation of an international coalition to fight corruption along the lines of the international coalition against ISIS,” Salih said.

Salih said the challenge of corruption is no less dangerous than terrorism.

“Terrorism can only be eliminated by draining its sources of funding based on corruption money as a political economy of violent,” Salih added.

Since 2019, hundreds of people have died in violent protests across Iraq against government corruption, unemployment and a lack of basic services, including electricity and clean water, as the country has failed to achieve stability following decades of sanctions and war.

The Biden administration is eying an eventual withdrawal of US troops from Iraq as the country’s security forces grow more capable and the threat of ISIS wanes, the two countries announced in a joint statement in April.

The US currently has some 2,500 troops in Iraq focused on the mission to defeat ISIS as part of Operation Inherent Resolve, the global coalition to defeat what remains of the ISIS caliphate that controlled parts of Iraq and Syria.

The troops have now shifted to training and advisory tasks, “thereby allowing the for the redeployment of any remaining forces from Iraq,” the joint US-Iraq statement said.

Salih presented the draft law to parliament to fight corruption, recover stolen funds and hold perpetrators to account, a statement read.

He called “on parliament to adopt this crucial piece of legislation, in order to curb this pervasive practice that has plagued our great nation.”

Transparency International ranks the country 21st from bottom in its Corruption Perceptions Index.

Endemic corruption was one of the drivers of protests that shook Iraq from October 2019 to June 2020.

“Corruption is an impediment to any nation’s economic and social development,” the Iraqi head of state said, whose powers are limited under the constitution.

Salih said violence and terrorism, which have plagued Iraq for years, “are deeply intertwined with the phenomenon of corruption.”

The draft law targets those who have held positions of director general and above in both government and public companies since the establishment of a new regime in 2004.

Under the law, transactions over $500,000 would be scrutinized as well as bank accounts, particularly those that held over $1 million, and contracts or investments obtained through corruption would be cancelled.

But security and politics expert Fadel Abo Ragheef was skeptical the law would be passed.

“It’s certainly one of the best pieces of legislation proposed by the executive branch since 2003. But will it be adopted? I doubt it,” he told AFP.

“The political parties the lawmakers belong to will act to sabotage it, so it doesn’t pass,” he said.

“In public they will support it, but behind the scenes, they will do everything to prevent its adoption, because many of the politicians are involved in this racket.”

An Iraqi banking source said politicians have smuggled $60 billion out of the country.

However, much of that was via Lebanon, a move now likely to their detriment, as the country is mired in a severe economic crisis, and it is almost impossible to get money out of its banks.

Australian ABC Airs Former US Ambassador Adumbrating Total Expulsion Of Occupied Palestinians
by Dr Gideon Polya

The Australian ABC (the taxpayer-funded Australian equivalent of the UK BBC) has recently aired a former US ambassador to Apartheid Israel and the UN  rejecting all present Palestine-Israel peace proposals as too hard, and his foreshadowing of a total  expulsion of all the Occupied Palestinians from Palestine in coming years. No dissent
was offered by the ABC    nor  any Help Line  referral for genocide-impacted people. What has the Zionist-subverted West come to?

The Australian ABC (the taxpayer-funded Australian equivalent of the UK BBC) has recently aired a former US ambassador to Apartheid Israel and the UN  rejecting all present Palestine-Israel peace proposals as too hard, and his foreshadowing of a total  expulsion of all the Occupied Palestinians from Palestine in coming years. No dissent was offered by the ABC  nor  any Help Line  referral for genocide-impacted people. What has the Zionist-subverted West come to?

I have made a formal complaint to the ABC in a detailed Letter that is reproduced below. My letter is being copied to Australian MPs and to Australian and world-wide journalists, scholars and humanitarian activists. Please inform everyone you can. Only global exposure and resolute global action can address this ever-worsening human rights atrocity in Palestine. The world must insist on  Palestinian human rights and “Free Palestine”, and back that insistence  with Boycotts, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) against genocidally racist Apartheid Israel and all its supporters.

LETTER. Complaints, Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC).

Dear Sir/Madam,

Complaint: Australian ABC airs US-adumbrated Palestinian Genocide

Coverage by the Australian ABC of the latest Gaza Massacre by US-backed Apartheid Israel  is appalling, racist and dishonest but reached a new low with the ABC airing of a former US ambassador’s rejection of all present proposals as too hard, and his foreshadowing of an expulsion of all the Occupied Palestinians. The various elements of my complaint  are numbered for your convenience. This continuing, highly offensive reportage by the ABC requires immediate  acknowledgment. comprehensive apology and profound institutional rectification.

(1). Tom Pickering (a former US Ambassador to Apartheid Israel and the UN) adumbrating total genocide by expulsion of Occupied Palestinians when asked by the Australian ABC interviewer about the future of Palestine-Israel and the 2-state solution (2021): “The Palestinians who clearly suffered a 20 to 1 death rate and who clearly are vastly overwhelmed by the Israelis in terms of military power… I think it is an extremely high mountain to cross… It doesn’t appear there is a 1 state solution to this problem and there is no multiple state outcome to this problem… Israel for a very long period of time under Netanyahu has kind of narrowed down the goal for the Palestinians to something like 20% of what is currently believed to have been the Palestinian state under the 2 state solution [i.e. to 4.4% of Palestine] … And if in fact there is no agreement and the status quo is continued with interruptions for violence as we have seen, it is quite possible that over years – and I am talking about a long time – you will see a removal of Palestinians from the West Bank and quite possibly Gaza to other parts of the world and a no-state solution if I can put it that way. Israel triumphant covering it all” (“Israel-Palestine conflict: eyes on peace options as Gaza truce holds”, ABC Radio National Breakfast, 24 May 2021: https://www.abc.net.au/radionational/programs/breakfast/eyes-on-peace-options-as-gaza-truce-holds/13356188 ).

(2). Wikipedia on the genocidal Nazi Madagascar Plan for the expulsion and relocation of the Jews of Europe: “[Franz] Rademacher [head of the Jewish Department of the German Foreign Office] recommended on 3 June 1940 that Madagascar should be made available as a destination for the Jews of Europe. With Adolf Hitler’s approval, Adolf Eichmann released a memorandum on 15 August 1940 calling for the resettlement of a million Jews per year for four years, with the island being governed as a police state under the SS. They assumed that many Jews would succumb to its harsh conditions should the plan be implemented. The plan was not viable due to the British naval blockade. It was postponed after the Nazis lost the Battle of Britain in September 1940, and it was permanently shelved in 1942 with the commencement of the Final Solution, the policy of systematic genocide of Jews, towards which it had functioned as an important psychological step” (“Madagascar Plan”, Wikipedia: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Madagascar_Plan ).

(3). Article 2 of the UN Convention on the Crime and Punishment of Genocide (the UN Genocide Convention) states: “In the present Convention, genocide means any of the following acts committed with intent to destroy, in whole or in part, a national, ethnic, racial or religious group, as such: a) Killing members of the group; b) Causing serious bodily or mental harm to members of the group; c) Deliberately inflicting on the group conditions of life calculated to bring about its physical destruction in whole or in part; d) Imposing measures intended to prevent births within the group; e) Forcibly transferring children of the group to another group” (“UN Convention on the Crime and Punishment of Genocide”, 1948: http://www.edwebproject.org/sideshow/genocide/convention.html ).

(4). The ongoing Palestinian Genocide by Zionists and Apartheid Israel has been associated so far with 2.2 million Palestinian deaths from violence, 0.1 million, and from imposed deprivation, 2.1 million, since the British with Australian assistance invaded the Middle East in 1914 for oil and imperial hegemony. The ongoing Palestinian Genocide and the ongoing Australian Aboriginal Genocide are similar in terms of perpetrator  “intent” , the overall death toll,  and the ratio of violent deaths to non-violent, avoidable deaths from deprivation and disease. Indeed the present life expectancy gap between Occupied Palestinians and their Israeli Occupiers is about 10 years, the same as between Indigenous Australians and non-Indigenous Australians (“Palestinian Genocide”: https://sites.google.com/site/palestiniangenocide/ ; “Aboriginal Genocide”: https://sites.google.com/site/aboriginalgenocide/ ; and Chapter 16, Gideon Polya, “US-imposed Post-9/11 Muslim Holocaust & Muslim Genocide”, 400 pages, Korsgaard Publishing Germany, 2020: https://www.amazon.com.au/US-Imposed-Post-9-Muslim-Holocaust-Genocide/dp/8793987048 ).

(5). Humanitarian and Palestinian perspectives on a peaceful solution for Palestine-Israel: While Tom Pickering sees no solution to the Palestine-Israel “problem”, for anti-racist humanitarians and Palestinians the solutions are obvious and readily achievable (full Palestinian human rights, end the Occupation, and full observance of International Law notably in relation to the Return of 8 million Exiled Palestinians). However humane and just solutions are prevented by the intractable genocidal racism of the Zionist colonizers who want all the land of Palestine (plus more) but not the Indigenous Palestinian inhabitants. The ethnic cleansing of 90% of Palestine means that a 2 state solution is dead. The present vile situation  is a one-state Apartheid reality as perceived recently by both Human Rights Watch and the Israeli human rights group B’Tselem (but not reported by the Zionist-subverted ABC).  The Subjects of Apartheid Israel total 14.3 million comprising 6.8 million Jewish Israelis (48%), 7.1 million Indigenous Palestinians (50%), 0.4 million non-Arab non-Jewish Israelis, 1.9 million Palestinian Israelis (Third Class citizens under over 60 race-based, Nazi-style discriminatory laws), and 5.2 million Occupied Palestinians (73% of Apartheid Israel’s Indigenous Palestinian Subjects, with zero human rights  and excluded from voting for the government ruling them i.e. subject to egregious Apartheid). There are also 8 million mostly impoverished Exiled Palestinians excluded on pain of death from the multi-millennial homeland continuously inhabited by their forebears until the genocidal Zionist invasion, ethnic cleansing  and colonization. The per capita GDP is a deadly $3,400 for Occupied Palestinians as compared to $46,400 for Israelis. The ABC falsely reports  on The Drum that applying the term “Apartheid” to Israel is “inflammatory” (Friday 21 May 2021: https://iview.abc.net.au/show/drum ). Numerous humane opinions indicate that  secular democracy and human rights for all  is eminently possible in Palestine as in post-Apartheid South Africa ( “One-state solution, unitary state, bi-national state for a democratic, equal rights, post-apartheid Palestine: https://sites.google.com/site/boycottapartheidisrael/one-state-solution ) e.g.

Mai Saif (Palestinian Australian activist) (2021): “Unfortunately, the way things are pitched is just as a very complicated issue. It is not. We live under Occupation. We have the powerful and the powerless, and they control the story”.

Yassmin Abdel-Magied (Australian Muslim journalist nationally vilified, censored, sacked by the ABC and driven  out of Australia for posting  the following  7 words on Facebook) (2017): “Lest we forget (Manus, Nauru, Syria, Palestine)” (for a detailed and documented amplification see Gideon Polya, “Yassmin Abdel-Magied censored on Anzac Day – jingoists trash Australian free speech” , Countercurrents, 28 April 2017: https://countercurrents.org/2017/04/yassmin-abdel-magied-censored-on-anzac-day-jingoists-trash-australian-free-speech/ ).

Professor Rima Najjar (a Palestinian activist, researcher and retired professor of English literature, Al-Quds University, Occupied West Bank) (2018): “As Dr Gideon Polya eloquently put it in “Palestinian Me Too: 140 Alphabetically-listed Zionist Crimes Expose Appalling Western Complicity & Hypocrisy”: “A peaceful , humane solution that would be of enormous benefit to all the world, to all the Jewish Israelis and to all the Indigenous Palestinians, would be a unitary state in Palestine with return of all refugees, zero tolerance for racism, equal rights for all, all human rights for all, one-person-one-vote, justice, goodwill, reconciliation, airport-level security, nuclear weapons removal, internationally-guaranteed national security initially based on the present armed forces, and untrammelled access for all citizens to all of the Holy Land. It can and should happen tomorrow””.

(6). Anti-racist Jewish and non-Jewish Australian perspectives on the ongoing Palestinian Genocide: I come from one of Hungary’s most famous Jewish families (ask any mathematician or surgeon). To my knowledge only a dozen of my wider family survived the WW2 Jewish Holocaust  in Hungary in 1944-1945. In both ethnically cleansed  Palestine  after the Nakba (800,000 Indigenous Palestinians expelled and over 500 villages  emptied), and in post-war Hungary after liberation by the heroic Russians (200,000 out of 700,000 Jewish Hungarians killed by the Nazis), the property of the killed and exiled was seized by the state.

Lest we forget the core moral messages of the WW2 Jewish Holocaust (5-6 million killed), the “forgotten” WW2 European Holocaust of which it was a part (30 million Slavs, Jews and Gypsies killed), the “forgotten” WW2 Chinese Holocaust (35-40 million Chinese perished under the Japanese  in 1937-1945) , and the “forgotten”  WW2 Bengali Holocaust ( 6-7  million Indians deliberately  starved to death by the British with Australian complicity for strategic reasons in Bengal, Odisha, Bihar and Assam in 1942-1945) – specifically,  “zero tolerance for racism”, “bear witness”, “zero tolerance for lying” and “never again to anyone”.

I am a scientist, writer, author, artist, Humanist and humanitarian  activist, an academic teacher for 4 decades, and the author of over 100 scientific  papers, about 20 chapters in books, and of 8 huge, science- and humanity-informed  books (the latest being presently edited by the commissioning  European publisher). Yet as a result of my sole allegiance to the land of my birth, Australia, and my inescapable obligation to “zero tolerance for racism”, “bear witness”, “zero tolerance for lying” and “never again to anyone”, for the last dozen years I have been rendered effectively “invisible” in Australia through false defamation by racist and traitorous  Zionists  (documented) and very likely through Zionist US-beholden Australian Intelligence and Mainstream media gate-keepers.

I am not alone. Anti-racist Jewish and non-Jewish Australians with a sole allegiance to Australia and critical of racist Zionism, and Apartheid Israel’s ongoing Palestinian Genocide are routinely falsely defamed as “racist” and “anti-Semites” by traitorous Zionists with a fervent allegiance to a nuclear terrorist, racist Zionist-run, genocidally racist, serial war criminal, grossly human rights-abusing and democracy-by-genocide Apartheid Israel. Anti-racist Jewish Australians critical of Apartheid Israel and the ongoing Palestinian Genocide also attract the additional false defamations that they are  “self-hating Jews” or “self-loathing Jews” (with this false obscenity being disgracefully aired by the Zionist-infested, Zionist-perverted and Zionist-subverted ABC).

This false defamation of anti-racist Jewish and non-Jewish Australians has stepped up with the adoption by both the governing Coalition and the Labor Opposition of the false, anti-Arab anti-Semitic, Islamophobic, anti-Jewish anti-Semitic, genocide- and holocaust- ignoring and genocide- and holocaust-denying  International  Holocaust Remembrance Alliance (IHRA) Definition of Anti-Semitism. The IHRA Definition  slimily and falsely suggests that Palestinians, Arabs, Muslims, anti-racist Jews and indeed all anti-racists critical of racist Zionism, Apartheid Israel and the ongoing Palestinian Genocide  are anti-Semitic. The IHRA Definition was used to destroy outstanding, anti-racist UK Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn, emasculated the British Labour Party, and has been condemned by over 40 anti-racist Jewish groups around the world.  The countries of the IHRA are overwhelmingly European pro-nuclear holocaust states including those of the genocidally racist   Anglosphere (the US, UK, Canada and Australia) and NATO countries (with many complicit in the WW2 Jewish Holocaust) (Gideon Polya, “US-backed IHRA Definition Of Antisemitism Is Anti-Arab Anti-Semitic & Anti-Jewish Anti-Semitic”, Boycott Apartheid Israel, 9 March 2021: https://sites.google.com/site/boycottapartheidisrael/2021-03-09 ).

This false and vile defamation of anti-racist Jewish and non-Jewish  Australians by traitorous racist Zionists and by their US-beholden Coalition and Labor supporters is in   gross violation of the spirit of Section 44 of the Australian Constitution that states (my emphasis in bold): “44. Any person who – (i.) Is under any acknowledgement of allegiance, obedience, or adherence to a foreign power, or is a subject or a citizen or entitled to the rights or privileges of a subject or citizen of a foreign power: or…shall be incapable of being chosen or of sitting as a senator or a member of the House of Representatives”.

Under an extreme  right-wing, war criminal and climate criminal  Coalition Government,  US lackey Australia is second only to the US as a fervent  supporter of Apartheid Israel and hence of Apartheid that is condemned as a crime against Humanity by the UN Convention on the Suppression and Punishment of the Crime of Apartheid. Indeed eminent Australian human rights lawyer Professor Gillian Triggs has observed that the Coalition “is ideologically opposed to human rights”. Politicians and their followers who support Apartheid Israel and hence the utterly evil crime of Apartheid are unfit for public life in a one-person-one-vote democracy like Australia. Decent Australians have no choice but to utterly reject the pro-Apartheid Coalition, vote 1 Green and put the Coalition last.

Zionism was always genocidally racist by frank admission from Zionist leaders from its racist psychopath founder Theodor Herzl (related to my non-Zionist Jewish Hungarian great-great grandmother) to the serial war criminal, genocidally racist and present Apartheid Israel PM Benjamin Netanyahu who stated (1989): “Israel should have exploited the repression of the demonstrations in China, when world attention focused on that country, to carry out mass expulsions among the Arabs of the territories” (“Zionist quotes re racism and Palestinian Genocide”, Palestinian Genocide : https://sites.google.com/site/palestiniangenocide/zionist-quotes ).

Zionism is genocidal racism and Nazism without gas chambers,  and one can argue that the Zionist-subverted Australian Coalition, Labor, Mainstream media and the taxpayer-funded ABC  urgently need de-Nazification. Silence is complicity, and  lying by omission is far, far worse than repugnant lying by commission because the latter at least permits public refutation and public debate. Indeed the ABC coverage of the latest Gaza Massacre has been so biased, cowardly, racist  and remorselessly untruthful that the ABC foreign affairs reportage and associated budget should be immediately  transferred to the Special Broadcasting Service (SBS) which has vastly better foreign affairs reportage.

The massive ABC support for the genocidally racist Zionist agenda soils the ABC, decent ABC journalists,  anti-racist Jewish Australians, Australia,  and indeed the whole world. It also has the potential for massive harm to Australia as decent people throughout the world increasingly adopt Boycotts, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) against Apartheid Israel and all people, politicians, parties, collectives, companies and countries complicit in this vile and genocidally racist aberration (“Boycott Apartheid Israel”: https://sites.google.com/site/boycottapartheidisrael/ ).

(7). Reductio ad absurdum re the latest Gaza Massacre and ABC lying by omission:   It is estimated from Israeli homicide data that on average some 11 Israelis are murdered by fellow Israelis each month (a very low rate on an international comparative basis) and in  the last month Gaza rockets have killed 12 Israelis, but the Israeli air force is not bombing Tel Aviv in reprisals. Instead the serial war criminal  and Orwellianly-named Israel Defence Force (IDF) has killed  248 Palestinians , including 66 children, with more than 1,900 people wounded from Israeli air and artillery attacks on the densely populated Gaza Concentration Camp;  58,000 Palestinians have been rendered homeless; and goodness knows how many will die avoidably in coming months and years from their  injuries and from deadly deprivation due to massive damage to homes, hospitals, clinics and other key infrastructure.

(8). Formal complaint to the Australian ABC:  The taxpayer-funded  Australian ABC has widely aired (without honesty, sensitivity, respect, dissociation, distancing, query, contradiction, balance, refutation, apology or even a Help Line  referral to genocide-impacted people) a former US Ambassador to Apartheid Israel and the UN dismissing as too hard 1-, 2- or multiple-state solutions for Palestine-Israel, and adumbrating total genocide of the Occupied Palestinians through mass expulsion in a “no state solution”. This grossly defective and highly offensive reportage by the ABC requires immediate  acknowledgment, comprehensive apology and profound rectification by the ABC and the Federal Government.

Yours sincerely, Dr Gideon Polya, Melbourne, Australia, 26 May 2021.

I think it is safe to say that what the corona virus has done is spotlight the ways in
which it is women’s work that allows society to function. It is true that men face a higher mortality rate from the virus (Black women as well), but it is women performing the work of care who have been put at the very center.

Core Constituency of Dalit Vote is the New Political Determiner
by Dr Rehnamol Raveendran

Dalits in West Bengal have opened the eyes of all political parties to the core constituency of Dalit vote as a political determiner in the Indian electoral game. It has now descended late on the political parties across the hue, that it was Dalits in Bengal
who ensured Dr. B.R. Ambedkar’s entry into the Constituent Assembly, when Sardar Patel was famously quoted to have said that ‘not only the doors but also the windows of the Constituent assembly are closed for Ambedkar’. The nation should be indebted to Dalits in Bengal, led by Jogendernath Mandal, who ensured Babasaheb’s arrival to Constituent Assembly. Rest is history and we have in our hands the most celebrated rights-document, The Constitution of India.

Rivers Ravaged by Sand-Mining Mafias

Disturbing reports have been appearing from several parts of the country of rivers ravaged by sand-mining mafias to the extent that the very survival of some of the smaller rivers serious harmed in this way has been threatened. Much of this mining  is clearly illegal and controlled by powerful local mafias who do not hesitate to confront and even attack even the few honest and courageous officials who dare to check them. Generally this situation does not arise as things are managed more conveniently by means of  corruption .

In Sirmaur district of Himachal Pradesh local newspapers very recently reported a strange case in which even in lockdown conditions  of deserted roads  tractors which could be identified clearly were allowed to proceed hindered to river mining sites. Forest officials who finally caught the illegal miners red-handed expressed great surprise  at the fact that when all entry points had been barricaded in lockdown conditions by the police still these tractors had no difficulty in covering a long distance to reach the mining site without being stopped and questioned regarding their destination and motive.

The recent fasts at Matra Sadan in Hardwar by saints were aimed at least partly at checking sand mining. Movements of people to check sand mining have been reported from time to time from several other areas including Bundelkhand. The Ken river which is a lifeline for Bundelkhand has been badly ravaged by sand mining mafias but recently there was also an inspiring instance of people rising against this in one village—Kolawalpur , locaed in Mahuwa block of Banda district. At a time and in a place where sand mining mafias spell terror for most people, ordinary villagers had somehow summoned the courage to guard and protect the river . Women were in the forefront of the struggle. They were standing in river water and shouting slogans and singing prayers to save the Ken river. Later they were joined by other people in a bigger march and the administration had to take protective actions  at least at one mining site.

While the villagers were certainly trying to protect the river, they were also motivated partly by resisting the injustice and harm caused to local workers and workers. This is another aspect of these ruthless mining mafias.

Here as well in several other places sand mining had been taking place at much beyond sustainable levels. Almost all the rules and precautions of relatively safer mining have been violated at most sites with ruthlessness, heavy  machinery has been taken to the riverbed  and those who question or challenge this have been threatened with violence.

Instead of confining to river-bank or flood-plain area the heavy machinery digs deep into the river-bed and for this temporary bunding is done to check the flow of water. This has several impacts which can deplete the water in the dry season while at the same time increasing the threat of erosion and floods at the time of rains. The capacity of the river to absorb and retain water and also to link with the groundwater aquifers and to replenish them when these need water is adversely affected.

The increasing turbidity created by machinery, the bunding , removal of sediments are all bad for diversity of aquatic life and fish as well as other species may perish in large numbers or suffer a gradual decline. Needless to add the satisfaction of the water needs of human beings, farm and domesticated animals as well as wild life around the vast area around river banks is also very adversely affected .

Clearly there is need for fixing and enforcing careful regulations as per local needs so that only very limited mining which is not harmful for river is allowed. Otherwise the costs in terms of permanent damage to river, increasing water scarcity for people as well as animals and increasing threats of droughts and floods will be very heavy.

Will you add your name to fully fund the IRS?

Katie Porter for Congress

In America, there are two tax systems: one for working families, and another for the rich and powerful who avoid paying their fair share.

Each year as hardworking families pay their fair share of taxes, the rich and powerful use loopholes to avoid paying what they owe. This causes the American people to lose one trillion dollars every year, and the impacts of this are being directly felt by low income Americans and working families.

Antonio, we need to crack down on corporations cheating the tax code, like Nike and FedEx. We need to recover the $1 trillion a year that they owe. One of the ways we can do this is by fully funding the IRS. Doing that alone—and making sure everyone pays their fair share—produces $6.50 in tax revenue per person.

Wealthy people and corporations shouldn’t get to play by a separate set of rules just because they’re rich and powerful. Katie is determined to hold them accountable by pushing for changes in our current system, like fully funding the IRS. Will you add your name in support of making sure corporations and the wealthy pay their fair share?

Add your name ›››

Currently, the IRS is severely underfunded, which is why corporations and wealthy individuals that don’t pay their fair share can get away with it. But by fully funding the IRS, auditors can go after corporations that aren’t paying their fair share—and the money from that can go right back into growing our economy, instead of lining the pockets of wealthy CEOs.

Katie has always been a proponent of holding people accountable in service of creating a society where we all have enough to not just survive, but thrive—and this is one such way that’s possible.

Add your name here to call for the IRS to be fully funded and to make sure that corporations pay their fair share of taxes.

Thanks for adding your name,

FOCUS: Joe Biden | My Trip to Europe Is About America Rallying the World's Democracies
President Joe Biden. (photo: WP)
Joe Biden, The Washington Post
Biden writes: "On Wednesday, I depart for Europe on the first foreign travel of my presidency."

n Wednesday, I depart for Europe on the first foreign travel of my presidency. It is a trip stacked with meetings with many of our closest democratic partners — including the Group of Seven nations, our NATO allies and the leadership of the European Union — before concluding by meeting with Vladimir Putin. In this moment of global uncertainty, as the world still grapples with a once-in-a-century pandemic, this trip is about realizing America’s renewed commitment to our allies and partners, and demonstrating the capacity of democracies to both meet the challenges and deter the threats of this new age.

Whether it is ending the covid-19 pandemic everywhere, meeting the demands of an accelerating climate crisis, or confronting the harmful activities of the governments of China and Russia, the United States must lead the world from a position of strength. Thanks to the American Rescue Plan and our domestic vaccination strategy, our economy is now growing faster than at any time in almost 40 years. We have created more jobs in the first four months of our administration than under any other president. Wages are increasing for American workers. And, as America’s economic recovery helps to propel the global economy, we will be stronger and more capable when we are flanked by nations that share our values and our vision for the future — by other democracies.

That’s the agenda I will advance at every stop. In the United Kingdom, after meeting with Prime Minister Boris Johnson to affirm the special relationship between our nations, I will participate in the G-7 summit. This group of leading democracies and economies has not met in person in two years due to the coronavirus. Ending this pandemic, improving health security for all nations and driving a robust, inclusive global economic recovery will be our top priorities.

Already, the G-7 finance ministers have made an unprecedented commitment to build momentum for a global minimum tax rate of at least 15 percent to end the race-to-the-bottom on corporate taxation. And with the United States back in the chair on the issue of climate change, we have an opportunity to deliver ambitious progress that curbs the climate crisis and creates jobs by driving a global clean-energy transition.

Just as it does at home, honing the ability of democracies to compete and protecting our people against unforeseen threats requires us to invest in infrastructure. The world’s major democracies will be offering a high-standard alternative to China for upgrading physical, digital and health infrastructure that is more resilient and supports global development.

As new technologies reshape our world in fundamental ways, exposing vulnerabilities like ransomware attacks and creating threats such as invasive AI-driven surveillance, the democracies of the world must together ensure that our values govern the use and development of these innovations — not the interests of autocrats.

Those shared democratic values are the foundation of the most successful alliance in world history. In Brussels, at the NATO summit, I will affirm the United States’ unwavering commitment to Article 5 and to ensuring our alliance is strong in the face of every challenge, including threats like cyberattacks on our critical infrastructure.

While in Brussels, I’ll meet with the president of the European Commission and the president of the European Council to discuss how the United States and Europe can work in close coordination on global challenges. We will focus on ensuring that market democracies, not China or anyone else, write the 21st-century rules around trade and technology. And we will continue to pursue the goal of a Europe whole, free and at peace.

So, when I meet with Vladimir Putin in Geneva, it will be after high-level discussions with friends, partners and allies who see the world through the same lens as the United States, and with whom we have renewed our connections and shared purpose. We are standing united to address Russia’s challenges to European security, starting with its aggression in Ukraine, and there will be no doubt about the resolve of the United States to defend our democratic values, which we cannot separate from our interests.

In my phone calls with President Putin, I have been clear and direct. The United States does not seek conflict. We want a stable and predictable relationship where we can work with Russia on issues like strategic stability and arms control. That’s why I acted immediately to extend the New START treaty for five years and bolster the security of the American people and the world.

At the same time, I have also imposed meaningful consequences for behaviors that violate U.S. sovereignty, including interference in our democratic elections. And President Putin knows that I will not hesitate to respond to future harmful activities. When we meet, I will again underscore the commitment of the United States, Europe and like-minded democracies to stand up for human rights and dignity.

This is a defining question of our time: Can democracies come together to deliver real results for our people in a rapidly changing world? Will the democratic alliances and institutions that shaped so much of the last century prove their capacity against modern-day threats and adversaries? I believe the answer is yes. And this week in Europe, we have the chance to prove it.

Covid sinks Tamil Nadu rural workers into debt
by Thozhilalar Koodam

Most of the low income families have received Rs 2000 from the Tamil Nadu Government for the month of May, and have been promised another instalment in June.  However,  these minimal cash transfers will not help them pay their rental dues or loan instalments, which run into several thousand
rupees a month. Unless the government makes a commitment to transfer basic income support for an extended period, the uncertainties will force people into extreme debt.

The Violence of Israeli Settler-Colonialism

On June 6, 2021, Israeli occupation forces detained Palestinian activist and journalist Muna al-Kurd, the leader of the campaign against the ethnic cleansing of the occupied East Jerusalem neighborhood Sheikh Jarrah. A day before, Al Jazeera Arabic journalist Givara Budeiri was arrested by Israeli police while covering a demonstration in the same area; she was later released from custody. What do these brutal practices of the Israeli state convey? They represent the innate violence of Zionist settler-colonialism. In the words of Mohammed El-Kurd (brother of Muna): “Living in Palestine is like having a policeman in your bed. Be it on the bus or in the supermarket, on the beach or in the courthouse, in a military uniform or in a Hawaiian shirt, settlers are everywhere. Colonial violence is a constant occurrence. Rifles aplenty.”

Foundational Violence

The settler state of Israel is built on foundational violence – a type of violence that creates sovereignty. Nakba – Arabic for catastrophe – is the word Palestinians use for Israel’s so-called war of independence. In November 1947, the UN partitioned British-controlled Palestine, granting the Zionists, who had been slowly colonizing the region, 55% of the land (the most fertile areas), though Jews were only a third of the population and controlled only 6% of the land at the time. Zionist forces used partition as a signal to move into action. In 1948, well-armed Zionist forces, numbering over 50,000, launched a war to ethnically cleanse the indigenous Arab population of Palestine.

Everything was organizationally orchestrated – well-calculated terror tactics were deployed to dispossess Palestinians of their land. Under Plan Dalet, spearheaded by David Ben-Gurion, who later became Israel’s first prime minister, Zionist forces were directed to carry out the “destruction of [Palestinian] villages (setting fire to, blowing up, and planting mines in the debris), especially those populations centers which are difficult to control continuously.” An official command to Zionist troops stated, “The principal objective of the operation is the destruction of Arab villages [and]…the eviction of the villagers.” More than 500 villages and localities were destroyed; more than 750,000 Palestinians were expelled from their homeland.

The Myth of Democracy

Israel is called the “only democracy in the Middle East”; this is patently wrong.  It belies the fact that the foundational violence inherent in the colonial state manifests itself regularly and molecularly in everyday acts of dehumanization against Palestinians. Millions of Israel’s subjects have no real rights; they can’t even be called second-class citizens, because so many Palestinians living under Israeli military rule are denied citizenship. This is part of an entire legal framework that helps the Israeli state kill, imprison and torture Palestinians with impunity, stealing land and engaging in ethnic cleansing, while pretending to adhere to liberal and democratic political values.

Israel’s 2018 Basic Law – also known as the Nation-State Law – affirms Jewish supremacy. It states: “[Israel is] the nation state of the Jewish people…[the] exercise of the right to national self-determination in the state of Israel is unique to the Jewish people [emphasis mine].” Thus, the Palestinian citizens of Israel are explicitly denied the right to reclaim their dignity.

According to Israeli law, any Jew in the world can become an Israeli citizen, whereas Palestinians are brazenly barred from returning to their home. Israel has had a longstanding policy of issuing, and revoking, IDs for Palestinians in order to deny their right to come back when they move or travel abroad. After its 2005 “withdrawal” from Gaza, for example, Israel began classifying Palestinians from Jerusalem and West Bankers who live in Gaza as residing “abroad,” revoking their IDs and barring their return to Jerusalem or the West Bank.

Israeli law also violates free speech rights; the Boycott Law disallows Israelis to “knowingly publish a public call for a boycott against the State of Israel.” The Nakba Law allows the Minister of Finance to fine any publicly-funded bodies that commemorate “[Israeli] Independence Day or the day of the establishment of the state as a day of mourning.” This is a blatantly discriminatory law against Palestinian citizens of Israel who wish to remember the forced dispossession and expulsion of their people. The law also prohibits events that criticize “the existence of Israel as a Jewish and democratic state,” essentially repressing anti-Zionist activism.

The fundamentally anti-democratic nature of the current Israeli governing framework of settler-colonialism stresses the need for a strong struggle for decolonization. Zionism is a totally illegitimate ideology which – when put into practice – enacts the perpetual erasure of a group of people, transforming the lives of innumerable people into a continuum of pure violence. We need to collectively strive for an immediate end to this monstrosity.

Free Market Illusions: What is the US’ Endgame in China?
by Dr Ramzy Baroud

Why does the US advocate a free market while doing its utmost to stifle it? The current US-China economic war is a perfect example of this perplexing question.

Why does the US advocate a free market while doing its utmost to stifle it? The current US-China economic war is a perfect example of this perplexing question.

The legacy of Milton Friedman, the founder of America’s modern political economy, was a representation of this very dichotomy: the use, misuse and manipulation of the concept of the free market.

Through the Chicago School of Economics, whose disciples have proved most consequential in the formation of the American approach to foreign policy, especially in South America, Milton constantly championed the virtues of the free market, emphasizing a supposed link between freedom and capitalism and insisting that governments should not micromanage markets.

But theory and practice are two different notions that hardly meet.

The ‘Chicago Boys’ – South American economists who were mostly educated under Friedman himself – were dispatched in the 1970s and 80s to advise some of the continent’s most notorious dictatorships on how to manage their economies. They selectively advocated free-market economics that seemed to only serve the interests of the US and, to a lesser degree, the ruling classes of various South American nations. The bloodbath that ensued in much of the continent during those years can still be felt to this day, from Chile to Argentina and elsewhere.

Friedman died in 2006, after receiving accolades from his own government, in addition to the British government during the reign of Margaret Thatcher. However, his supposed wisdom continues to shape the mindset of mainstream US economists to this day, thus allowing for the unresolved dichotomy to persist: how can the US government ‘stay out’ of the free market while, simultaneously, intervening to control this very free market whenever the outcomes do not suit its interests? A perfect case in point is the ongoing US economic war on China.

Contrary to the common perception, this war was not initiated by the Trump Administration when the US President slapped a series of tariffs on Chinese exports to the US, starting in June 2018. Indeed, it has existed for much longer. Even the supposedly more amiable Barack Obama Administration was engaged in this war. We could argue that Obama’s Pivot to Asia in 2012 was a renewed war declaration.

When the new Joe Biden Administration declared a major ‘reset’ in its foreign policy, Biden did not see the need to engage with China through friendly diplomatic channels. The hostilities continued between both countries simply because this ‘conflict’ has been the status quo ante for decades.

Last April, a bipartisan push at the US Congress raised the heat on Beijing by linking the latter’s human rights record with its economic practices, proposing to funnel billions of dollars into the US economy to, essentially, micromanage the ‘free market’ in favor of the US and to challenge China’s ascendancy.

On May 25, the Chairman of the US House of Representatives Foreign Affairs Committee, Gregory Meeks, introduced the 470-page Bill, entitled, “Ensuring American Global Leadership and Engagement Act.” This EAGLE Act “addresses a range of issues, including increased investment to promote U.S. manufacturing, trade, work with allies and partners, re-engagement in international organizations and recognition of the treatment of China’s Uyghur Muslim minority as genocide,” Reuters reported.

The Bill advanced after a Senate vote two days later, and is expected, once finalized and signed into law, to serve as the legal and political foundation of Biden’s economic war on China. Like previous administrations, Biden’s is motivated by the Chicago Boys’ mentality, i.e. free market that suits the interests of the US and economic war when this ‘free market’ deviates from its ultimate goal.

One of the most baffling aspects of the US-Chinese economic war is that both countries are similar in terms of economic ambitions. In some ways, the Chinese copied various aspects of the American economic model of yesteryears. China is a capitalist country though it is managed by a ‘Communist Party’. The Party’s intervention in the economy, though it uses unique ideological justification and political discourse, is similar to the US government’s management of the US economy, especially during times of crisis, for example, the 2008 recession.

This ‘conflict’ is hardly motivated by an ideology or human rights violations, but by the fact that China’s economy continues to soar, thus increasing its share of the global economic largesse. With an 18.3% growth in the first quarter of 2021 – the biggest jump in GDP since 1992 – the Chinese momentum is eclipsing the performance of the US economy and its European allies. With economic power, political influence follows, with China now hoping to rearrange global alliances, not just in Asia, Africa and South America, but also in Europe.

According to many mainstream analysts, such as Stuart Anderson, writing in Forbes in June 2020, Trump’s economic war on China has failed. That failure is the direct result of, as Panos Mourdoukoutas concludes, also in Forbes, “the lack of clear direction of what the American side wants from China.” This lack of clarity continues to “give Beijing an upper hand.”

The ill-defined US objectives in China continue to also characterize the new Administration. Even the massively expensive Congressional Bill, once it becomes law, will not be able to answer the simple question: what is the US endgame in China?

Of Plagues and Rodents: Australia’s War Against Mice
by Dr Binoy Kampmark

Mice populations have recently soared, notably in New South Wales and southern Queensland, given drought breaking rains.  Crops have been attacked and animal food reserves contaminated.  There have been instances of infection, notably
leptospirosis.    As Danica Leys of the Association of Rural Women sees it, “It is an economic and health crisis.  From the contamination of food and water by mice, to the diseases they spread, this pest is affecting more than crops, not to mention the stress it causes”.

Not a day goes by these days without a casual remark about animal extermination in Australia.  Mice have moved to the front of the queue in terms of animal species Australians would most like to liquidate.  The language used has various registers: sombre and regretful; grave and scientific; panicked and bloody.

This is all ordinary fare and is characterised by ignoring the anthropogenic nature of the problems.  Behind every pest outbreak on the Australian continent is a human hand operated by a muddled mind.  In Australia, that hand has been particularly busy in negligence. Since the eighteenth century, animal species have been introduced inadvertently or through design affecting and in many instances devastating the continent’s ecosystem.

Some have been introduced with the purpose of neutralising other designated pest species, the most calamitous example being that of the cane toad.   Introduced by agricultural scientists of the Bureau of Sugar Experiment Stations in 1935, the toad’s intended target were scarab beetles whose root-feeding larvae delighted in commercial agriculture, notably sugarcane crops.  Famously, the toad preferred different sources of food and proceeded to prey on other species with gusto, including native predators.  The species flourished.

The humble house mouse is said to have arrived with the British First Fleet in 1788 but some speculation abounds that the introduction might have come via Dutch ships charting the coast of “New Holland” in the 1600s.  A 2011 study on that question found that “a British Isles origin of Australian mice is the most reasonable interpretation of our results.”

Mice populations have recently soared, notably in New South Wales and southern Queensland, given drought breaking rains.  Crops have been attacked and animal food reserves contaminated.  There have been instances of infection, notably leptospirosis.  As Danica Leys of the Association of Rural Women sees it, “It is an economic and health crisis.  From the contamination of food and water by mice, to the diseases they spread, this pest is affecting more than crops, not to mention the stress it causes”.

The rise in numbers has made an impression on foreign press outlets.  The London-based Express wrote of an infestation of tens of millions of mice.  Australians had “reported the mice terrorising their lives, creeping over their faces as they sleep, biting them, invading classrooms and even nibbling at patients in their hospital beds.”  It did not take long for these militant rodents to be seen as a threat to Australia’s most populous city.  Channel 10 News Sydney had warned about a potential mice “march”.

The hearty solution, as always with the next pest, is mass extermination.  Australia’s deputy Prime Minister Michael McCormack expressed the widely held view that, “The only good mouse is a dead mouse.”  To that end there is seemingly no end to the devilish applications of human ingenuity in destroying or regulating a species.  Modern mice killers try to sound like educated middle managers, flirting with scientific rationalist inquiry.  Can we be more modern in the ways we massacre them?  Take, for instance, the next generation of “gene driven” technology, with the New South Wales government promising AU$1.8 million for the venture.  (The total mouse control package comes to AU$50 million.)

The most important feature of this technology is inducing infertility, a soft, tender gloved version of dispatch. This form of extermination is clean, avoids killing other species on route, and sits well with the bio-controllers.  “We have modelled it already,” Paul Thomas of the University of Adelaide states, “and it should cause the population to crash over time.”   Thomas is also delighted by the “X-shredder” approach, which involves targeting the X chromosome carrier, namely, the sperm of the mice.

You might be forgiven for thinking that a daring experiment for the betterment of humanity was in the offing.  “Mice arrived in Australia with the first fleet,” trumpeted the NSW Minister for Agriculture Adam Marshall, “and from then until now the best control methods we have been able to come up with have been baiting and trapping.”

The less modern aspect of this inspired strategy is the use of a particular poison, bromadiolone, which has been likened by Marshall to the use of “napalm”.  (Should we be worried?)  The factsheet of the National Pesticide Pest Centre is cheery about its effects.  “Unlike some other rat poisons, which require multiple days of feeding by an animal, bromadiolone can be lethal from one day’s feeding.”

With such sinister war metaphors involved, even the bio-control boffins are concerned that this was going too far.  Species murder is acceptable, but, as with some genocidaire types, it comes with ceremonial restraint.  Killing mice with such poison would insert the substance into the food chain, endangering predators.

Peter Brown, who heads the rodent management research team at the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO), notes that “anti-coagulants can accumulate up through the food chain, and so birds of prey or other animals can be feeding on dead mice and they could potentially get a lethal dose themselves through secondary poisoning.”

Evidence of bird deaths arising from the ingestion of poisoned bait has already been found in the central west of NSW.  And that’s in connection with the less toxic and commonly used zinc phosphide.  Kelly Lacey, a volunteer for the NSW Wildlife Information, Rescue and Education Services (WIRES), found 100 dead galahs in a cemetery in Parkes at the end of last month.  It was particularly galling for her, seeing as she had been involved in rehabilitating and releasing a good number of the birds around the area.

Bait poisonings of household pets and working animals have also been recorded.  Peter Best, a veterinarian based in South Tamworth, estimated that one in 15 admissions to his practice had involved poisoned animals.

Such facts could only make another researcher at the CSIRO sigh.  “If it’s used properly,” observed Steve Henry, “it should be a very, very low risk that a bird should find one of those grains of zinc phosphide and eat it.”  The bait was sound.  The same could not be said for those using it.  “Why birds start falling out of the sky is [that] people do inappropriate things.”   Such people used the bait in ways “not described on the label, or people make up their own baits.”

When asked about her attitude to the problem, Healthy Rivers Dubbo convenor Melissa Gray suggested, with no detectable irony, that everybody wanted “the mouse plague gone, but there’s no silver bullet.”  No silver bullets, maybe, but virtually everything else in the armoury of extermination. For the president of the NSW Farmers Association, the mayhem caused by such a poison as bromadiolone was worth the effort.  Showing the somewhat patchy wisdom of his forebears, he accepted the lethal calculus.  “It will cause poisoning in animals that eat the dead mice”.  That, however, “was the lesser of two evils”.

India’s Connect Central Asia policy

Due to border disputes, ethnic problems and conflict over control of natural resources, central Asian countries have also failed to congregate as a regional bloc, like SAARC or ASEAN, despite some of central Asian’s countries being part of the Euro Asian Economic Union. Hence, it has been difficult for India to formulate a coherent regional policy, despite drafting the Ashgabat agreement, International North-South Transport Corridor, and Chabahar port agreement in the past.
