To every organizer who fought so hard, this victory is yours.

Ayanna Pressley

Joe Biden just canceled thousands of dollars of student debt.

For nearly two years, we have organized, mobilized, and advocated for President Biden to use his executive authority to cancel federal student loan debt.

We pressed for this on behalf of and in partnership with families across America—the Black and brown folks, the women, the students, the workers, the elderly, the parents, the teachers, the young people, and more—who have been devastated by this nearly $2 trillion crisis.

We urged the President to make good on his promise to cancel student debt and bring meaningful relief to our families in this moment of overlapping crises—and today he acted. The President’s action today will change lives for the better.

By reducing the unjust burden of student debt, this action will help millions of people to make ends meet, build generational wealth, grow their families, purchase homes, and more. I will continue to advocate and work with the Administration to ensure this relief is implemented as swiftly and efficiently as possible.

We would not be here today if it were not for the broad and diverse coalition working relentlessly to make this moment possible. Today is a victory for the movement and for so many families.

There are so many issues of consequence facing our communities and, together, we will celebrate the victories and keep up the fight for meaningful, transformational policies.

In solidarity,

Ayanna Pressley

Our Republican opponent

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez for Congress

It’s official.

After yesterday’s primary, we now have a Republican opponent that Alexandria will face in the general election on November 8, 2022.

Last year, our Republican opponent raised $10 million against us. The entire Republican establishment and their corporate allies put the full weight of their propaganda machine into spreading lies about Alexandria.

Whether or not their candidate had a chance of winning wasn’t the point. They used the campaign as an opportunity to discredit Alexandria and prop up their talking points on Fox News. And this year will be no different.

Just yesterday, their campaign set up a massive #OustAOC sign on a highway overpass in Queens.

We need to be ready to fight back against their mailers, posters, commercials, and digital ads with deep organizing and truth telling, which is why we’ve set a goal of raising $150,000 before the end of August.

If you’re able to, can you please make your next $15 donation to AOC’s Re-Election Fund today to make sure we’re ready for whatever attacks our Republican opponent throws at us?

No matter what, we’re going to stay focused on the facts and issues that matter to the people of NY-14 — and the work that Alexandria has done to fight for working families.

Thank you for your support,

Team AOC

USA Today calls this a “red flag” for DeSantis

Crist for Governor

I have never felt more hopeful than I do now. Recent polling has us beating Governor DeSantis. This is some of the most up-to-date data available – and it shows that we’re winning.

See for yourself:

St. Pete Polls
Charlie 45%, Gov. DeSantis 44%

USA TODAY
“DeSantis does not crack 50% against Crist … a red flag [for DeSantis]”

Listener Group
Charlie 50%, Gov. DeSantis 49%
PITCH IN TO HELP CHARLIE
DEFEAT GOV. DESANTIS!

That’s right.

I always believed that once Florida got to know the truth about Governor DeSantis’ record — and my love for the beautiful state of Florida — that we could win this race. Now with this latest polling, it’s clear we’re making it happen.

But in a race this close, every vote counts.

That’s why I’m hoping I can count on your support today. My campaign manager tells me we need 3,147 donations in the next 24 hours to stay on top of our benchmarks. This is essential to keep our momentum going.

It’s because of your support that we pulled ahead in the primary election. And it’s only with your support that we’ll keep this lead going into the final months of the general election. Please, contribute a few dollars today so that our movement can keep growing.

From the bottom of my heart, thank you.

- Charlie

HISTORIC climate action

We just made the biggest investment in protecting our climate in US history! This is what putting the interests of our people and environment over special interests looks like.

SUPPORT A
PRO-CLIMATE CONGRESS

Thanks to Democrats’ Inflation Reduction Act, we’ve achieved:

  • Historic climate investment by reducing carbon emissions by roughly 40% by 2030
  • Lower energy bills which would cut the price by $500 to $1,000 per year
  • Investments in clean and ethical manufacturing jobs by offering more than $60 billion to help promote manufacturing growth and job creation
  • Increased investments in disadvantaged communities by cleaning up pollution and taking steps to reducing environmental injustice with $60 billion for environmental justice

In this historic moment of addressing the climate crisis, Democrats sided with the American people — and every single Republican in the Congress sided with the special interests.

Let’s be clear, it is not surprising that the GOP tried blocking this bill from passing as they knew it would take the biggest step forward on climate EVER. We need to keep the House in Democratic hands to ensure that our country takes the necessary steps to responds to climate change.

Can you chip in $25 or whatever you're able to keep the House blue and allow Democrats to take more aggressive action to confront the climate crisis and strengthen our energy security?

Thank you,

Team Cicilline

A little about me

Janet Mills for Governor

I want to tell you a little bit about me, but before I begin, can you help my campaign meet our critical August fundraising goal by giving $5.00?

I was born in Farmington, Maine, where I still proudly live today. The granddaughter of Aroostook County potato farmers and the daughter of a long-time high school English teacher and the U.S. Attorney for Maine, I learned the value of hard work at an early age.

I first entered public service as an Assistant Attorney General, where I prosecuted homicides and other major crimes. After a few years, I was elected District Attorney for Androscoggin, Franklin and Oxford Counties, making me the first woman to be elected as a DA in New England.

In 1985, I met and married the love of my life, my husband, Stan, a widower with five young daughters ages four to sixteen. We moved back to Farmington, and I became a full-time mom to five daughters who I helped raise while working full-time.

Janet with Stan

In the last year of Stan’s life, I learned firsthand what thousands of Maine families go through every year—a complex and confusing health care system, rejection letters from insurance companies, and unaffordable prescription drugs even for those lucky enough to have coverage.

As governor, I’m committed to fighting for the people of Maine because I know that the people of Maine deserve a leader who works hard every day to better their lives. That’s what I’ve been doing the last three years, and that’s what I’ll continue to do.

Today, I’m asking you to support my campaign for re-election with a donation of $5.00, and together, we can continue to move Maine forward.

Thank you,

Janet Mills

Jamaal’s major win

Justice Democrats

Did you see the news? Jamaal won BIG in his primary election in NY-16 last night.

Now all 6 members of the Squad are heading to the general election in November!

We need your help to keep up this momentum. Our work to recruit progressive champions depends on our grassroots fundraising. Will you make a $10 contribution right now?

Every one of our wins helps grow our movement for progressive change in this country and our work to transform the Democratic Party. Jamaal’s win is huge because it’s his first time running for re-election. After facing corporate money and defeating a corporate incumbent in 2020, Jamaal has proven again that he’s the people’s choice.

Every single dollar we raise goes towards battling the political establishment, whether that means running a young progressive woman of color against a corporate Democrat or advocating for a Green New Deal while Big Oil lobbyists, the GOP, and the Democratic establishment try to stop us.

Thank you for everything you’ve done to support our work. Please make a $10 donation right now to help us continue our work.

More soon,

Team JD

Marjorie Taylor Greene voted against awarding Capitol Police the Congressional Gold Medal

Hi, it’s Marcus Flowers, Army Veteran and Democratic nominee against Marjorie Taylor Greene in Georgia.

On January 6, 2021, brave D.C. and Capitol police saved our democracy from violent insurrectionists inspired by Donald Trump’s Big Lie.

But unfortunately, my opponent, Congresswoman Greene, voted against awarding the Congressional Gold Medal to those same officers.

It’s pathetic. So please, help me unseat her by chipping in $5, $10, or whatever you can, and let’s restore honor, decency, and integrity to this seat.

Thank you,

Marcus Flowers

Student loan relief!

Bowman for Congress

President Biden finally took action — canceling up to $20,000 for Pell Grant recipients and $10,000 for non-Pell Grant recipients. Borrowers who earn less than $125,000 per year and households earning less than $250,000 are eligible to have their loans canceled. This plan also caps loan repayments at 5% of monthly income for those with undergraduate debt, and the pause on repayments will be extended to the end of the year.

For decades, we've shackled college students with debt — and this is finally a step in the right direction. Our pressure campaign worked. This victory was won by the movement of countless activists, organizers, organizations, and progressive elected officials who have pushed the president relentlessly to take action.

Today we can celebrate this win, but tomorrow we must keep up the pressure to build on this victory and win more.

I am committed to continue fighting for further student loan forgiveness, and if you are with me, please contribute to our campaign today.

Too many people can't afford to live, and the massive burden of student loans makes the problem worse. Our economy is still in recovery, and even though jobs numbers are up, they are up less for the Black and brown communities. Even some seniors still struggle with student loan debt into their sixties and seventies.

And means-testing debt relief by capping income for loan holders ignores the fact that those with loans already were means-tested through FAFSA to get the loans in the first place.

That's why we have to push for more. If we build on this victory with more action on loan forgiveness, we can stimulate the economy, make a huge dent in the racial wealth gap, and help those who are struggling. I'll keep fighting for more student loan relief in Congress — so if you can today, make a contribution to help keep me there.

Peace and love,

Jamaal Bowman

Stop the Insane Nuke Bailout

Stop the Insane Nuke Bailout

By Harvey Wasserman, Reader Supported News

21 August 21

uried deep in Joe Biden’s various infrastructure deals is a bailout every bit as insane as the original decision to stay in Afghanistan – up to $50 billion in handouts to keep old nuke reactors operating … at least until they blow up.

The cost of our arrogant lunacy in Afghanistan was thousands of lives and maybe $2 trillion.

The cost of the inevitable explosion at one or more of these crumbling jalopy nukes could be millions of lives and trillions in both destroyed property and an irradiated ecosphere.

Throughout the globe, the Solartopian technologies of wind, solar, batteries, and efficiency are skyrocketing in production while their prices plummet. But Biden’s proposed bailout would take a huge amount of capital away from clean, job producing renewables and put it into expensive, dangerous, obsolete reactors.

Richard Nixon in 1974 – amidst the Arab oil embargo – promised there’d be a thousand “Peaceful Atom” nukes in the US by the year 2000. In that year there were 104. Today there are 93, with the number still dropping – but not fast enough.

Every day these fast-deteriorating reactors become more likely to explode. Under the Price-Anderson Act of 1957, their owners are exempted from liability if their negligence lets a reactor carpet the American landscape with deadly radiation.

Because they’re not on the hook for the apocalypse they might cause, reactor owners have no particular incentive to expensively maintain these nukes as they sink into decrepitude. And thus the taxpayer and the individual citizen (YOU!) must absorb the cost of the meltdowns/explosions we all know are coming.

The rationale for the bailout is that aging atomic reactors – even ones long since amortized – cannot compete with the onslaught of renewables, batteries and efficiency. Allegedly, in our “free market capitalist” country, we all must compete. But when major corporate assets like nuke reactors can’t, apparently they must be bailed out.

The “problem” is obvious: the cost of operating and maintaining old nukes is skyrocketing. So is the cost of building new ones. The last two under construction in the US – in Georgia – have already doubled in cost (approaching $30 billion) and are still not open. If they ever do open (God help us!!!) the electricity they’d produce would be far more expensive than the wind turbines and solar panels that will surround them.

Indeed, from 2009 to 2019, the price for solar photovoltaic electricity dropped by 89%. For on-shore wind, it went down by 70%.

An epic rush to off-shore wind is on … Big Time. Ironically, some of those gigantic turbines in the ocean are set to send juice through undersea cables into switching stations once used by nuclear plants such as California’s San Onofre (now shut) and Diablo Canyon (set to go down in 2024-5). The juice they send will be cheaper, safer, cleaner, more reliable and far better for human health and eco-sustainability than anything the Peaceful Atom has ever produced. They will NOT, for example, be producing radioactive waste the likes of which is being sloppily stored ONE HUNDRED FEET from the tide line at San Onofre.

What they WILL do is bury King CONG (Coal, Oil, Nukes and Gas), which entrenched fossil/nuclear fuel interests rely on to keep control of our energy supplies.

The lengths to which the corporate dinosaurs will go to preserve these old reactors is astounding. The owners of two extremely decrepit and dangerous nukes on Lake Erie helped funnel a $61 million bribe to the Speaker of the Ohio House in exchange for a $1 billion ratepayer bailout (since repealed). Disgraced governor Andrew Cuomo helped shut two extremely dangerous old nukes at Indian Point, near Manhattan, but forced through $7.6 billion in handouts for four falling-apart upstate reactors, at least one of which the owner wanted to shut. Connecticut, New Jersey, Illinois and other states are in various stages of bailout madness.

But now Biden wants to take the disease federal. The reactors he wants to save for $50 billion cannot compete with new wind or solar. They may temporarily sustain an aging, fast-retiring workforce. But they’ll create no new training or safe longterm employment for a rising Solartopian generation.

Burning at 571 degrees Fahrenheit, the reactors will continue to heat the planet daily … and when they explode. The carbon they emit while operating and in fuel production will fuel the climate crisis. The wastes they create remain forever unmanageable.

In all, the Biden bailout is a disgrace, a planet-heater, and a real threat to human survival. Please join those working against it.

The advances in renewables over the past ten years are unprecedented in human history. They are poised to help us solve the problems of energy sustainability and climate chaos.

We don’t need an insane nuke bailout getting in the way. Let’s stop it!!!

Why an assassination in Moscow matters to Ukraine and the West

The daughter of a prominent Russian fascist was killed in a car bombing in Moscow. Most Americans have no idea who the Dugin family is, but this event could have serious repercussions in Russia and Ukraine.

Not Ordinary Propagandists

car bomb exploded in one of Moscow’s wealthy neighborhoods on Saturday night, killing Darya Dugina, the daughter of Aleksandr Dugin, the spiritual godfather of Russia’s surging fascism. Her death may have an impact far beyond the Russian capital. Or it might not; this may have been part of yet another tangled vendetta among Russia’s elites. We won’t know the truth for a while—if ever—but following this story requires some context about the Dugins.

It’s possible (if unlikely) that this might not have been about politics. Dugin’s daughter was driving her father’s car, but in Moscow, people with money and proximity to power live with a certain amount of generic risk from any number of potential enemies. To be involved in anything of material or political importance in Russia is to court risk. (Many years ago I was interviewed for a relatively high-visibility job with a Western company that wanted to assign me to Moscow. The position, I was assured, came with a fine salary and a nice apartment—and reliable bodyguards.)

But the Dugins are not ordinary propagandists. Aleksandr Dugin is part of a weird strain of Russian imperial hypernationalism that somehow manages to venerate Russian Orthodoxy, Stalin, the Nazis, and the occult all at the same time. You can read more here about the late-1980s trends in the U.S.S.R. that produced this vicious and deeply weird school of thought, but spare yourself the effort it would take to make sense of it all. Much of it is warmed-over Russian messianism and mystical gobbledygook, the product not only of 19th-century Russian grievances against Europe and Western Christianity but also of late-20th-century Soviet resentments against the “Atlantic” world led by the United States.

Underneath it all is the simple and brutal belief that Russia—specifically white, Christian Russia—is destined to rule Eurasia as the first step to contesting world domination with the decadent Americans and Europeans. Dugin’s ravings are as unreadable in Russian as they are in English, but the Russian General Staff assigns Dugin’s book as a required text, and understandably so. It is an almost perfectly Orwellian view of total and permanent war, a perfect ideology for a country afflicted by both a deep inferiority complex and a dark spiritual vacuum.

Ukraine, of course, is at the top of the list of regions to be recaptured. Kyiv is the birthplace of Slavic Christianity, and for people like Dugin (and Vladimir Putin), the existence of Ukraine as an independent state is intolerable. Dugin doesn’t mince words about Ukraine; back in 2014, he said that Ukrainians “must be killed, killed, killed.”

Dugin’s 29-year-old daughter ran a disinformation website in Russia and was already under U.S. sanctions. (Among other things, she claimed that the Bucha massacre outside Kyiv was staged.) She shared her father’s ideology and his loathing for Ukraine.

So who killed her? Russia’s Federal Security Service (the FSB, by its Russian initialism) claims that a Ukranian woman named Natalia Vovk moved into Dugina’s apartment block a month ago, planted the bomb, and fled to Estonia. This seems pretty quick and convenient, and the Russian news service TASS has already declared the case solved.

It’s true that Russian officials in Ukraine have been killed by car bombs, which are old-school hits by modern Russian standards. It’s not clear, however, why the Ukrainians would want to go to Moscow to take out second-stringers like Dugin or his daughter; his star has dimmed over the years, in part because he was critical of Putin for not being brutal and imperialistic enough. As my fellow Russia expert (and Dugin watcher) Nick Gvosdev told me today, Dugin’s ideas may have had some influence, but he wasn’t a presence in the Kremlin, where he was seen as unstable and potentially embarrassing. Dugin isn’t a nobody, but he wasn’t exactly running the war in Ukraine, either.

Kyiv denies Moscow’s charges. Meanwhile, a former Russian parliamentarian and dedicated Putin opponent, Ilya Ponomarev, claimed in a broadcast from Kyiv that the bombing was the work of a group calling itself “the National Republican Army” that is dedicated to overthrowing Putin, but this is not verifiable.

Could the FSB have hit Dugina while trying to kill Dugin, perhaps as a plot—the kind Russian spies have been accused of in the past—to spin up fresh hatred against Ukraine and get some of the heat off itself for its botched advice six months ago? That’s a stretch, too, because anyone who admired Dugin was already all in on the war. But in Moscow in 2022, anything is possible.

Unless someone with more credibility claims responsibility, or more evidence emerges in Russia, we’re unlikely to know much more anytime soon, no matter how quickly TASS or Twitter declares the case closed. The one certain outcome is that the Russians will use Dugina’s death to press on with their campaign of atrocities and destruction.

Progressives Say Biden Student Debt Plan 'A Good Start, But Not Enough'
August 24, 2022
After years of activist organizing, U.S. President Joe Biden on Wednesday announced a plan to cancel $10,000 to $20,000 in federal student loan debt per borrower, a move that drew both praise and admonition from progressives—many of whom want to erase all student debt and make public higher education free for all.
