The Daily Dean Newsletter: Tuesday, August 12, 2025Top 3 Moments from Trump's batsh** DC presser and Martial Law plan revealed, Epstein victims are coming, Canada's boycott is worse than you think...Truth-first, democracy-forward. Here are the top five stories you actually need today. 1) Trump’s “DC Takeover” Presser: Three Batshit Moments You Can’t IgnoreHe tried to sell a police-state soft launch as a public-safety plan—and it showed. We pulled the three wildest moments (yes, including the “medians” rant) and explain why each one matters for civil liberties, federalism, and 2026. Why it matters: Authoritarians thrive on chaos. Yesterday was an effort to normalize federalized policing in blue cities ahead of election season—while distracting from other mounting scandals. 2) Lev Parnas Dissects the Playbook: “Warm America to Martial Law”Right after the presser, we went live with Lev Parnas and Zev Shalev. Parnas lays out how the spectacle primes voters to accept federal militarization as “order”—and why it’s not just about deflection from the Epstein mess.
Why it matters: Conditioning. Make martial law sound like maintenance, not mayhem—and you never need permission to use it. 3) Canada’s Boycott Is Crushing U.S. Tourism—AgainJuly’s numbers are brutal: Canadian return trips from the U.S. by car down 36.9% year-over-year (seventh straight monthly decline), air returns from the U.S. down 25.8%, while overseas trips by Canadians rose. U.S.-resident car trips to Canada also fell 7.4%. Translation: Canadians are choosing Europe, Mexico, the Caribbean—anywhere but America.
Why it matters: This is measurable, intentional consumer power. Provinces, schools, and families aren’t waiting for Ottawa to “send a message”—they already did. 4) Context File: Zev Shalev’s “The Greatest Heist” (Required Reading)Want the decades-long backstory for why a U.S. president keeps praising a genocidal dictator and undermining alliances? Zev Shalev’s serialized investigation “The Greatest Heist” assembles three decades of reporting into one coherent map—money, kompromat, and the hollowing out of democratic institutions. Why it matters: It’s not a three-year scandal—it’s a thirty-year operation. Understanding the network clarifies the “why” behind every “what.” 5) September on the Hill: Survivors to the U.S. Capitol—Force the Files PublicReps. Thomas Massie and Ro Khanna plan to bring Epstein/Maxwell survivors to the Capitol in September to center their voices and press the Epstein Files Transparency Act. The strategy includes a discharge petition to bypass leadership and force a floor vote, compelling the DOJ to release unclassified records in a searchable, downloadable format with victim-protective redactions.
