Trump is not handling things well as the Thanksgiving holiday approaches
Hi all, lots of news so far today. Let’s get right into it.
Let’s start with Trump’s posts and other public messaging from him this morning. Rather than focus on policy, the economy, or the American people’s welfare, Trump instead melted down over a recent New York Times report detailing his increased fatigue and declining state. His response to the article, which detailed his late start to the day and pared down schedule, was to lash out by calling the female reporter from that paper “ugly both inside and out.” This is not an isolated incident; it follows a pattern of misogynistic attacks on women in media and public life, including just recently screaming at a female reporter and calling her “piggy” for asking him a question about Jeffrey Epstein.
Trump then suggested that Republicans adopt the moniker “TPUBLICANS” or “TEPUBLICANS.” Let’s be honest for a moment: for a guy who has prided himself on branding and nicknames, this is another example that he’s completely lost his fastball.
He shared a meme that said, “If the entire Republican Party does not stand united behind President Trump right now, then there is absolutely no reason to have a Republican Party.” The desperation is palpable. Trump has quickly entered “lame duck” status. And he knows it. It was less a show of strength than an admission of how deeply isolated he has become.
In parallel, he flooded his platform with posts depicting extremist rhetoric and imagery, sharing images of himself wielding a sword, declaring him the “Slayer of the Deep State,” and promoting QAnon messaging. In normal times, a president amplifying the messages of a violent death cult would be cause for front page headlines. But here we are.
This is what occupies Trump’s time while his own aides actively launder Russian positions into U.S. policy.
Bloomberg recently published a transcript of Trump adviser Steve Witkoff coordinating directly with top Russian officials in an effort to pressure Ukraine into accepting a 28-point surrender plan drafted in Moscow. European allies rejected it. Trump embraced it. The leaked call captured Russian officials mocking Ukraine and praising Trump’s willingness to force their plan onto President Zelenskyy.
All of this unfolded against the backdrop of Trump’s obsessive push to further expand his private golden ballroom, which is already set to be larger than the White House itself. Even the architect who designed it warned that the expansion is unnecessary and structurally risky. Trump tore down the East Wing to build it, kicking up dust likely filled with asbestos and exposing workers to toxic materials. That was done on the taxpayer’s dime.
While Trump remodels his palace, real Americans are being crushed. His trade war devastated U.S. farmers. Now his administration is quietly rolling out a $12 billion bailout to repair the damage. As one critic noted, Argentina received a $40 billion windfall during Trump’s tariff war and then sold soybeans to China, undercutting American farmers who now need taxpayer-funded rescue.
The hypocrisy is brazen. When President Biden attempted targeted student loan forgiveness for middle class families, right-wing media erupted in outrage. Yet a multibillion-dollar Trump bailout for farmers harmed by his own policies barely created a ripple. Meanwhile, student loan defaults are reaching record highs and locking millions out of home ownership, car loans, and economic mobility. That harms the entire economy.
At the same time, Trump officials blame Biden for everything from global cattle shortages to the cost of beef. It is unserious and insulting. They know the causes are global supply issues, weather impacts, and reduced cattle herds, and Trump’s policies, yet they continue the reflexive deflection: Biden, Biden, Biden. Nearly a year into Trump’s second term, the excuses are growing more hollow by the day.
Side note: I’m often asked where I go to do research for my reporting. One of the main research tools I use is called Ground News. Ground News shows me how stories are being covered from different political perspectives, and it highlights “blindspots” where only left-wing or right-wing media is covering a story.
Ground News has been a great sponsor of our YouTube channel and podcast, and they’re now sponsoring this post as well. I worked out a deal with them: if you go to ground.news/meidas, you can get 40% off Ground News’ top-tier Vantage plan, which gives you unlimited access to all the research tools I use.
Ground News is subscriber-funded, so they don’t rely on ads that could introduce bias. By subscribing, you support both our channel and their independent team working to keep the media transparent.
Now back to my report.
Even Fox “News” is struggling to spin the chaos. The network is now running ads from Kristi Noem touting an “America First” fee increase on foreign tourists visiting U.S. national parks. Travel to the United States is already collapsing because of Trump’s extremist immigration policies and openly hostile rhetoric toward other nations. Their solution is to charge international visitors more. It will only reduce tourism further.
Yet amid the dysfunction there are signs of political realignment. A new Emerson poll shows Democrats within two points in Tennessee’s deeply conservative 7th congressional district, a district Trump won by more than 20 points. If this pans out, it would be one of the most stunning shifts of the cycle and a sign that the MAGA movement is eroding from within.
Finally, the conservative 11th Circuit Court of Appeals upheld a $1 million sanction against Trump and his lawyer Alina Habba for their frivolous conspiracy-laden racketeering lawsuit targeting Hillary Clinton, the DNC, and former FBI Director James Comey. The court agreed that Trump has a “pattern” of filing meritless lawsuits. It is rare for a federal appeals court to speak so bluntly. It is even rarer for it to impose penalties of this size.
In other legal news, the new Fulton County prosecutor dismissed the charges against Trump and his co-conspirators in Georgia for 2020 election interference.
Trump’s public unraveling is not a show of power. It is the frantic flailing of a political movement collapsing under the weight of its corruption, lies, and authoritarian ambitions. Where our institutions fail, the American people are the ones finally holding him accountable. So let’s stay engaged. Let’s stay energized. And let’s keep exposing the truth. Together.
