Last week, John Legend endorsed our campaign when he came out strongly against the recall effort.  Then, unsurprisingly, Ted Cruz attacked him as an “out-of-touch Hollywood millionaire” and made an ignorant wisecrack about crime in California. Well, if Ted Cruz doesn’t support my campaign, I guess I’m doing something right. A Shocking Weekend of Violence

 

Just days after President Biden announced reforms to rein in the deadly gun violence pandemic and the nation was stunned by the shooting in the New York City subway, Americans suffered another bloody weekend.   Between Friday and Sunday, our nation experienced at least 337 instances of gun violence across the country, resulting in 138 deaths and 322 injuries (excluding firearm suicides). In Philadelphia, 3 people died and 14 were injured in 11 separate incidents. “Violence and trauma of these incidents extend beyond those directly affected and permeate into the very fabric of our communities,” said Police Chief Danielle Outlaw. In Pittsburgh, 2 minors died and at least 8 were injured “at a party that drew 200 people, many of them underage, to an Airbnb rental. As many as 50 rounds were fired, the authorities said.” In South Carolina, 29 people were injured in 2 separate mass shootings. On Saturday, 10 people were shot at a mall, and on Sunday, at least nine people were shot at a nightclub in Hampton.   This weekend, the violence stretched coast to coast: We are 108 days into 2022 and our nation has already suffered at least 144 mass shootings, 5,501 instances of homicides, and an estimated 7,128 suicides.   The gun violence epidemic is a national crisis and it demands a higher level of national leadership. That’s why we applauded the Biden administration last week for taking important steps to address this epidemic. But given the continued Congressional deadlock, we expect him to do anything and everything in his power to save lives.   The President must establish a new White House Office of Gun Violence Prevention to coordinate a bold national response to this crisis and release a comprehensive plan to reduce all forms of gun violence. He must also work with his allies in the Senate to ensure that his second nominee to head the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives is confirmed and can get to work cracking down on illicit firearm trafficking and irresponsible gun manufacturers and dealers.   Let’s keep fighting for reforms that we know will save lives. CA’s record-breaking gas prices

 

If you’re from the Golden State, you won’t be surprised to hear that gas prices in California are the highest in the country.

With fossil fuel companies price gouging at the pump, Big Oil is raking in record-breaking profits while California residents suffer the expense. Putin's war of aggression in Ukraine also demonstrates how vulnerable the US and our European allies are when we rely on despots and dictators for our energy needs.

California Republicans are leading protests and — believe it or not — voter registration efforts at gas stations while falsely accusing President Biden of the increases in gas prices. Meanwhile, my Republican colleagues in Congress are accepting big checks from fossil fuel executives and prioritizing corporate profits over their constituents.

These high gas prices don’t make the case for more of a reliance on fossil fuels and petro-dictatorships, but less. And the only way to permanently deprive Putin of the money to make war is by devaluing his only resource — oil and gas.

And here’s the other uncomfortable truth: The United Nations’ Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) recently published a report outlining the dire state of the planet and the urgency of reducing emissions and calling on governments to address the impending climate disaster facing our planet.

We’re not talking about a matter of decades. We’ve got a couple of years — just the next few elections — to maintain and build a Democratic majority that will act on climate.

We need to pass legislation this year to invest in clean renewable energy so we can provide relief for consumers and protect the planet, and no matter what, we cannot lose the House or Senate.

Passover, Easter, and Ramadan

 

I wanted to wish everyone who celebrated this weekend — whether it was Easter, Passover, or Ramadan — a blessed and happy holiday.

It's a rarity to have these major Abrahamic holidays all occur at the same time. As my family and I celebrated the hope, light, and spirit of Jesus' resurrection on Easter, I had the chance to think about our future — and reflect on the hope I have for what we can do to make it better. As siblings in humanity, I'm so excited about all the work we can do together for good. We have a chance to fix broken systems, restore justice, and create real equity.

Whether or not you celebrated this weekend, I hope you and your loved ones continue to stay safe and healthy. I'm glad to have you in this fight for the future of our democracy!
