Oxfam report: Poorer countries going from crisis to catastrophe
by Nick Beams

In the lead up to the semi-annual meetings of the

Now Is the Time for Nonalignment and Peace
by Roger McKenzie and Vijay Prashad

The warmakers are idealists. Their wars do not settle the major dilemmas of humanity. The ideas of nonalignment and peace, on the other hand, are realistic; their framework has answers to the children who want to eat and to learn, to play and to dream

Climate Change is Killing Trees
by Robert Hunziker

A dreaded repeat performance of tree deaths of 252 million years ago may be starting to re-appear. Throughout the world trees are dying en masse. It’s
troubling. Scientists are studying this strange phenomenon in the context of a rugged past event of 252 million years ago.

Is Mars Planet B?
by Stephen Shenfield

But why do these people matter? Aren’t they just nutcases? Unfortunately, they do matter. Because one of them is Elon Musk, CEO of Space Exploration Technologies Corporation (SpaceX) as well as electric car maker Tesla and other companies and the wealthiest person in the world, with a net worth of over $300 billion. He is devoting his energy and fortune to an attempt to accomplish a mass colonization of Mars, hoping to ‘kickstart a million-strong self-sustaining city on Mars as early as 2050.’

Western-Led Globalization Might End, but the New Globalization Might Have an Eastern Face
by E Ahmet Tonak and Vijay Prashad

The appetite in
many parts of the world has already increased for an alternative to Western-shaped globalization, but this does not necessarily mean deglobalization. It could mean a globalization platform that no longer has its epicenter located in Washington or Brussels.

Obscene Outsourcing: The UK-Rwandan Refugee Deal
by Dr Binoy Kampmark

This month, the government of UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson joined an ignominious collective in announcing a refugee deal with Rwanda, seedily entitled the UK-Rwanda Migration Partnership.    The fact that such terms are used – a partnership or deal connotes contract and transaction – suggests how inhumane policies towards those seeking sanctuary and a better life have become.

Kamila Valieva and Eileen Gu:  Young Women Athletes as Enemies of Empire
by Linda Ford

So Kamila Valieva and company will skate at home, and Eileen Gu will still be considered a traitor by many Americans.  The hate expressed by Tara Lipinski and Christine Brennan is too easily tapped by the American sportsworld.  Here is hegemonic politics, and ruthless patriarchy and racism, coming together.  And here are two remarkably strong and level-headed young women athletes who are braving the results of being who they are.  In its overwhelming power, the US Empire has made evil all things Chinese and Russian, and women athletes have not been spared the weaponizing of that hate.

A pandemic of human rights violations in Madhya Pradesh
by Pooja Yadav

The arbitrary arrest and humiliation of those protesting against police and politicians was in continuation of a long history of
autocratic behaviour by those controlling state machinery in many parts of India. The problem seems to have worsened during the period of the Covid pandemic, which saw authorities concentrate even greater power in their hands  under the guise of safeguarding ‘public health’ or  ‘controlling infection’.

Hindu Religious Festivals: An Excuse to Unleash Social Terror Upon the Muslim Community
by Bebaak Collective

The pattern of Ram Navami processions becoming occasions for display of Islamophobic bigotry, followed by anti-Muslim violence, is being witnessed in atleast nine states; including Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat, New Delhi, Goa, Rajasthan, Jharkhand, Karnataka, West Bengal, Maharashtra and Bihar.

Goa must rein in the communal tinderbox
by Dr Ranjan Solomon

Goa was in
crisis mode on Sunday when Hindu-Muslim clashes occurred in the vicinity of Vasco. A large crowd of Ram Navami processionists marched through Vasco on the occasion of Ram Navami on 10th April. They chose the small and congested streets of the area rather than the broader convenient approved route thus creating disruption. At the conclusion, a small group continued to march towards the Masjid-A-Aqsa mosque. Muslims were praying at the mosque ahead of the ‘Iftar’. The processionists chanted ‘Jai Shree Ram’ and political catch phrases such as ‘go to Pakistan’. They entered the mosque and continued sloganeering with intent to provoke. Muslim elders intervened and averted a clash inside the mosque.

There can be no bigger harm to national welfare than disturbing inter-faith harmony
by Bharat Dogra

At a time when inter-faith harmony is being disturbed at
several places in the country, it is important to recall a very important lesson of our freedom movement—all the great leaders who got the maximum support and affection of people were those who stood firmly for inter-faith harmony.

The All American 8th Deadly Sin….
by Philip A Farruggio

Apathy!! Add that one to the list of: Lust, Gluttony, Greed, Sloth, Wrath, Envy and Pride. Sadly, the dumb down nature of our country lends for the nurturing of apathy.

Apathy!! Add that one to the list of: Lust, Gluttony, Greed, Sloth, Wrath, Envy and Pride. Sadly, the dumb down nature of our country lends for the nurturing of apathy. Travel through the supermarkets, Main Streets, malls and just about anywhere that Americans congregate and you can almost smell the foul odor of apathy. It seems that, with some exceptions, NO ONE CARES! The Trump inspired MAGA crowd, with all their rancor, act like they careFactor out abortion, the undocumented and gay rights and these folks could not give a rat’s rear end about how this corporate empire shackles them. They are getting screwed royally in their health care ( or lack of substantial coverage) , cable and internet charges, insurance costs,  residential rents, medicinal costs, college tuition, and most important, where their tax money goes. If they took off those red hats and stood next to the loyal Democratic Party suckers… sorry, voters, they ALL would realize that the empire owns them!  This Two Party/One Party charade keeps flushing at least 50% of federal revenues down the toilet bowl of military spending. The next sound you hear is silence… the silence of apathy.

Maybe if my friends and neighbors would turn off and put down those electronic appendages to their hands they would wake up! They would realize that by government not subsidizing Medicaid fully and  properly, the **** will really hit the fan. Most working stiff Seniors need to first go onto Medicaid to then be able to reside in an assisted living or nursing home without being bankrupted. Do the majority of us who continue to support both phony parties understand those ramifications? Or, how many Americans realize that the credit card companies have been screwing cardholders with usurious rates 20 points above the prime rate? This has been going on for generations with no recourse from the phony Congress and Presidency. As far as cable television, should we wait until the monthly charge for decent TV viewing reaches $ 400 -$ 500 per month? It’s already well over $ 200, when 10 years ago the same coverage was 1/2 that price. For what? All the cable providers do is send the signals into your home… period!

We just celebrated the 75th anniversary of Jackie Robinson breaking the color barrier in baseball. Well, during that time his teammates on the Brooklyn Dodgers, along with all baseball players, had to secure off season jobs to supplement their meager baseball salaries. Factor out the few superstars like Mickey Mantle and Ted Williams and 99% of players needed to work during offseason to support their families. Now, in ALL professional sports, worldwide, even the low man on the totem pole is making a million bucks. The superstars, or should I say most of the stars of teams, are earning mega $ millions. Even the ( so called ) sports journalists are earning $ millions for a few hours of work each day. Imagine paying a player $ 40-50 million a year? Imagine the super wealth of the billionaire owners and top management of teams who dole out that cash. Then look at the electronic media and how much they are earning from those terrible commercials we have to watch too often. The entire industry is swimming in cash… OUR cash, we the fans! Try to take your wife and kids to a professional sports game. Between the ticket prices, parking, refreshments and food and you are looking at minimum $ three to four hundred bucks… for one stupid game!

No matter where you focus your attention you should realize how powerful this apathy is. If it wasn’t for the military draft during the Vietnam ( so called ) War the apathy would have been preeminent. Of course, all those chickenhawks could be just that because they were exempted from the draft. One wonders if Dick Cheney and Donald Trump had to actually put that helmet on and wave away mosquitoes in some rice paddy… Or if Bush Jr. had to actually fly a fighter jet over Hanoi… So, the empire knew that except for the families of our soldiers and the few like this writer who protested, they could spend over a decade and trillions of our taxes in Iraq and Afghanistan. If someone was not in uniform, who cared? It was more important to play with your cell phone. The empire uses the embedded mainstream media to sell the **** to the public, replete with all those yellow ribbons and bumper stickers. How many times has this writer seen the famous ‘ Proud Mom of a Marine’  or something to that effect on the rear bumper of the car in front of me? They can sell war like toothpaste anytime they wish!

Yes, the apathy is actually deafening. The disconnect towards others around us is sad as well. I sat in my favorite restaurant before the pandemic, on a Sunday afternoon. There were five tables filled with patrons. Two tables had a couple each, one had three folks, another had four and one had five customers. I looked around and to my surprise not ONE table had people conversing. Everyone was too busy playing with their gadgets! As my former street corner activist friend, the late Walt DeYoung would say ‘ Nuff Said’!

Foisting of Fresh Charges on Comrade Batakrushna Swain Is A Grave Travesty of Justice
by Press Release

Jan Adhikar Manch, a coalition of trade unions, democratic rights groups and other progressive forces in Odisha, strongly condemns the manner in which Comrade Batakrushna Swain was arbitrarily foisted with fresh charges by
the state police on 12 April 2022 as he was ready to leave the Puri jail.

There's a clear choice in this race MAY 17 PRIMARY

Justice Democrats

Justice Democrat Summer Lee has spent years taking on big corporations. Her opponent, Steve Irwin, has spent years defending them.

Summer has fought corporate polluters and won. Irwin spent time at an asset management corporation getting rich by steering investments to oil and gas companies. Now, Big Oil is funding Irwin’s campaign.

Irwin raised $600,000 in the first quarter of 2022. We must help Summer close the gap, because she’s not taking a dime from corporate PACs or fossil fuel companies. She’s relying on our support.

Can you rush a $10 donation directly to Summer’s campaign right now? Her primary is on May 17, so every day and every dollar counts.

Photo of Summer Lee smiling. Text: 2022 Justice Democrats Slate. PA-12. Summer Lee for Congress. Donate

As a labor organizer, Summer Lee fought to raise the minimum wage and led voter mobilization efforts. As a corporate lawyer, Irwin protected companies accused of withholding unpaid wages and sexual discrimination.

The choice in this race could not be more clear. But Irwin has a lot of money and the support of powerful special interests like Big Oil and right-wing foreign policy hawks. We need to send Summer a flood of grassroots donations right now to support the final few weeks of her race.

Chip in $10 or anything at all right now to help Summer defeat this corporate-backed candidate. We know most congressional races are won by the candidate that spends more money, so we need to bolster Summer’s fundraising right away.

Thank you for all that you do to support our work and our primary candidates.

In solidarity,

Justice Democrats

COVID, MARJORIE 'JEWISH SPACE LASER' GREENE, UNQUALIFIED JUDICIAL APPOINTMENTS

FROM THE BOSTON GLOBE:

Today's US coronavirus / COVID-19 numbers in the US
From the Center for Systems Science and Engineering at Johns Hopkins University

Confirmed US cases: 80,705,007
Confirmed US deaths: 901,172

COVID update: It's remarkable that even though COVID-19 cases have increased by anywhere from 25 to 145 percent in 30 or so US states in just the past two weeks, hospitalizations and deaths continue to drop overall.

It's a testament to the power of the vaccines, the effectiveness of treatments like Paxlovid, and the fact that tens of millions of Americans have been infected and therefore have some measure of protection (although not as much as a vaccine provides). All have served to blunt the virulence of the disease.

Look, COVID-19 is still killing more than 400 Americans every day. And that number could rise if the uptick in cases turns into more of surge or a new variant crops up. Don't forget that of all the American children (ages 5 and older) and adults who are eligible to get the shots, only 70 percent are fully vaccinated.

And clearly, with the dramatic rise in home tests, the number of actual COVID cases is obviously far, far higher than is reflected in official numbers. Nonetheless, the dramatic decline in people ending up in ICUs or dying is good news.

Travel mask mandate: What to make of the federal court decision voiding the Biden Administration's mask mandate for public transit? I have no idea whether it was legally sound, and the Justice Department may not bother to appeal it.

But the federal judge in Florida who made the ruling is certainly worth scrutiny, if only because Trump picked her. US District Judge Kathryn Kimball Mizelle, who was 33 at the time of her nomination, was deemed unqualified by the American Bar Association because she had not been practicing law for long enough.

The ABA recommends that nominees for federal judgeships have at least 12 years of experience practicing law. Seems reasonable. Mizelle? She had never tried a case, civil or criminal, as lead or co-counsel. She did four federal clerkships, including for Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas. She worked at a law firm for 10 months, and spent about three years in government practice. That's it.

The bottom line for the ABA was that she simply did "not meet the requisite minimum standard of experience necessary to perform the responsibilities required by the high office of a federal trial judge."

Elections matter, folks.

MTG in trouble? It will be interesting to see how far this court case that's trying to disqualify US Representative Majorie Taylor Greene from running for re-election goes.

A group of Georgia voters are arguing that Greene helped facilitate the Jan. 6 violent insurrection that tried to stop Congress from certifying Joe Biden’s victory, action that they claim violates a section of the 14th Amendment that says that no one can serve in Congress "who, having previously taken an oath, as a member of Congress ... to support the Constitution of the United States, shall have engaged in insurrection or rebellion against the same." (It was designed to stop lawmakers who fought for the Confederacy in the Civil War from running for re-election.)

The group has already won once: a federal court judge ruled yesterday that the case can proceed. Greene has frequently used language encouraging violence on the Capitol, and called the Jan. 6 insurrection "our 1776 moment." Whether other courts find that Greene actually engaged in insurrection is an open question.

More drilling on public lands won't solve the issue of high gas prices right now

Sunrise Movement Logo

Late last Friday, President Biden broke yet another campaign promise:

Screenshot of NYT headline that reads Biden Plans to Open More Public Land to Drilling

On the campaign trail Biden told us, “And by the way, no more drilling on federal lands, period. Period, period, period.” But now 145,000 acres of public land in 9 states are set to be auctioned off for oil and gas drilling.

The fact of the matter is, more drilling won’t solve the issue of high gas prices right now – so why is Biden pushing to resume drilling on public lands and further our dependence on fossil fuels?

it’s crucial that we support leaders who are ready to take bold climate action in 2022. Please donate $20.00 — or whatever you can afford – to support Sunrise and our fight for a Green New Deal:

If you've saved your payment information with ActBlue Express, your donation will go through immediately:

This is why young people are doubting the political process altogether. If Biden wants to increase voter turnout this year, he should work to deliver on the things he promised, rather than move further away from them.

Biden is actively turning voters away with his recent actions. As his approval ratings plummet, especially amongst young people, his administration continues to stall enacting proper climate legislation.

The Biden administration can’t get away with this disastrous climate decision. That is why Sunrise Movement sent the Democratic establishment a memo warning them that if candidates fail to run boldly on climate change in 2022, their chances will suffer even further.

And new polling conducted by Data for Progress in the recent Texas primaries reinforce that young people overwhelmingly support a Green New Deal, and are willing to organize their communities and turn out for candidates that support a Green New Deal as well.

Democrats are treating 2022 like they already lost, but the fight is far from over. If they seize the progressive mandate that young people elected them on and deliver, they still have a shot.

with the 2022 midterm elections in full swing, we need all hands on deck to push Democratic leaders to tackle climate change head-on. Please donate $20.00 – or whatever you can afford – to support Sunrise and our fight for our future.

If we’re going to combat fascism and win in 2022, Biden must be a leader and course correct. This election and our future depends on it.

In solidarity,

Varshini, Sunrise

CNN + Jamaal

Bowman for Congress

Just last week, Jamaal went on CNN to discuss some of his bills — the Ending Corporate Greed Act and Babies over Billionaires — that will help address rising inflation, pandemic profiteering, and inequality.

Watch Now »

You make this work possible. By chipping in, powering our reelection campaign, and helping us hit our goals, you're enabling Jamaal to direct 100% percent of his efforts to legislating and organizing. The last thing we want is for him to have to worry about fundraising — so please, will you chip in $10 to make sure Jamaal and our team can stay focused on taking on big fights in Congress?

Take a look at the work your $10 contribution is funding:

  • Making sure the ultra-wealthy pay their fair share: During the first two years of the pandemic, the wealth of America's almost 700 billionaires grew by over $2 trillion dollars, and continued to rise to over $5 trillion. That's why we’re thrilled Jamaal introduced the Babies Over Billionaires Act, which would require ultra-wealthy taxpayers to pay their fair share of taxes. Over 10 years, it will raise $1 trillion, which we can use to fund critical programs to support everyday people.
  • Leading the charge to completely cancel student debt: During the height of the 2020 election, we watched as candidates touted canceling student loans as a pillar of their campaigns. But since then, we’ve only seen delays and excuses. Jamaal is leading the call to cancel every penny of the student debt that weighs down college students and working families — and with over $100,000 in student debt himself, he knows firsthand the need for immediate and comprehensive relief.
  • Working to lower prices for everyday people: Between a global health pandemic, an unjust war, and immense inflation, families have been asked to pay higher and higher prices for gasoline, food, and other basic necessities. That's why Jamaal is teaming up with Sen. Bernie Sanders to ensure working people aren’t paying the price of corporate greed. By introducing the Ending Corporate Greed Act, Jamaal is working to impose a 95 percent tax on the windfall profits of the corporations with more than $500 million in annual revenue.

We're proud to have a leader like Jamaal in Congress fighting for us. All this work so far has been possible due to your continued support, and the great work to come will only happen with your support, too. Please, chip in $10 to our campaign today and let's work to keep Jamaal and his bold, progressive legislating in Congress.

If you've stored your info with ActBlue Express, we'll process your contribution instantly:

Thank you,

What is a recall?
When a manufacturer or the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) determines that a vehicle creates an unreasonable risk to safety or fails to meet minimum safety standards, the manufacturer is required to fix that vehicle at no cost to the owner. That can be done by repairing it, replacing it, offering a refund (for equipment) or, in rare cases, repurchasing the car.

What should I do if my vehicle is included in this recall?
If your vehicle is included in this recall, it is very important that you get it fixed as soon as possible given the potential danger to you and your passengers if it is not addressed. You should receive a separate letter in the mail from the vehicle manufacturer, notifying you of the recall and explaining when the remedy will be available, whom to contact to repair your vehicle, and to remind you that the repair will be done at no charge to you. If you believe your vehicle is included in the recall, but you do not receive a letter in the mail from the vehicle manufacturer, please call NHTSA's Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236, or contact your vehicle manufacturer or dealership.

Act now: Massachusetts can meet 100% of its energy needs through renewables

MA Can Go 100% Renewable for Its Electric Sector

ACT NOW

Massachusetts can lead an equitable transition to 100 percent renewable electricity by 2035, according to new analysis by the Union of Concerned Scientists and GreenRoots. The research indicates we can get rid of fossil fuel pollution from the power sector, and make progress across the economy, in the near term.

Urge your Massachusetts state legislators to support bold action on renewable energy for our electric sector.

The results of the latest Intergovernmental Panel for Climate Change report show that the current trajectory of heat-trapping emissions is alarmingly off-track. Emissions must be cut sharply within this decade and decline to net-zero by 2050 to limit global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius. The electricity sector has a key role to play in climate action as we electrify transportation and heating. Massachusetts must speed up its efforts to clean the electric grid—act now.

Our analysis shows that a more rapid, equitable transition to 100 percent renewable energy is possible and would bring health and economic benefits:

  • Less fossil fuel generation = better health (more than $1.7 billion in public health savings by 2040).
  • More renewable energy = more jobs and other economic benefits ($6.8 billion in net labor income by 2040).
  • Progress on climate change (85 percent drop in heat-trapping emissions from the power sector between 2020 and 2040).
  • A clean energy future for all = inclusivity, representation, voice, and vote in decisionmaking and policy development for Black, Indigenous, and People of Color, as well as low-income communities, and fossil fuel-dependent workers.

Call on your state legislators to prioritize a faster, more equitable move to renewable energy for Massachusetts.
