Delivering on my promise to exonerate the innocent

EACH WRONGFUL CONVICTION REPRESENTS LOST LIVES, A CRIMINAL WHO WAS NOT PROSECUTED, TAXPAYERS FORCED TO FUND THE COST OF INCARCERATING INNOCENT PEOPLE.

THE STAGGERING COST:  32 YEARS TO INCARCERATE AN INNOCENT MAN!

He spent three decades in prison for a murder he didn't commit. Now at 61, this San Francisco man will be freed

Earlier this week, I was proud to follow through on one of my core campaign promises: Exonerating the innocent.

32 years ago, Joaquin Ciria was arrested for murder. And for 32 years, he has maintained his innocence.

Now, new evidence presented by Mr. Ciria’s counsel provided convincing proof that Mr. Ciria was convicted on the basis of false testimony for another man’s crime.

Following an extensive review by the San Francisco District Attorney’s Innocence Commission, I announced the exoneration of Mr. Ciria: he was wrongly convicted.

Mr. Ciria’s case was the first one reviewed by the Innocence Commission since its formation. Ensuring that innocent people do not languish in prison for crimes they did not commit is a critical part of putting the justice back in the criminal legal system.

But now, we’re expecting the recall effort to double down on their efforts to block our progress and reinstate outdated practices in San Francisco. So I need your help. Will you make a contribution to my campaign today to support our efforts to fight for real progress?

Wrongful convictions continue to plague our justice system at great cost to the families, victims, and accused persons whose lives are devastated when the wrong person is convicted of a crime.

Prosecutors have a duty to promote justice — and that includes correcting injustices.

Mr. Ciria spent more than 30 years in prison for a crime he did not commit. Although we cannot give him back the decades of his life lost we are thankful that the court has corrected this miscarriage of justice.

And if we can stop the Republicans’ recall effort, we will only continue making progress that will promote justice and safety.

That’s the San Francisco we all deserve. So please, contribute any amount to my campaign today and help fight for the city that we want to see.

Thank you,

Chesa Boudin

Chesa Boudin was elected District Attorney of San Francisco in 2019 to reform our criminal justice system. Now, right-wingers  want to reverse our progress and return our city to a time when innocent people were locked away and police acted with impunity.

Please chip in today to keep up the fight to reform San Francisco's criminal justice system.
