Hunger doesn’t take a summer vacation

 

As a father of two young boys – 8 and 9 years old – I know how much kids look forward to summer. The school break is supposed to be a time for fun, family, and freedom. But for far too many kids in New Jersey and across the country, summer also brings something else: hunger. The hard truth is this: hunger doesn't take a summer vacation. During the school year, many children rely on school meals to get the nutrition they need to grow, learn, and thrive. But when school is out, those meals often disappear, and the support system kids depend on falls away. That's unacceptable. We have a responsibility to do better and ensure that no child in this country ever has to go to bed hungry, no matter the time of year. That's why I'm introducing the Summer Meals REACH Act – a bill designed to help close the gap in food access during the summer months. This legislation gives local organizations more flexibility and support so they can reach more kids and meet families where they are. This is a national problem, and it demands a national solution. We can solve childhood hunger, but only if we stay focused and keep fighting for the resources our kids deserve. No child should ever go hungry just because school isn't in session. Let's make sure that summer stays a time of joy, not a time of worry. Republicans are gearing up to hand out massive tax cuts for billionaires while cutting vital programs like Social Security, Medicaid, and more. Just last week, the House voted again to pass their joint budget resolution which continues the process for their outrageous budget plan. Throughout this entire budget process, Republicans have been in lock-step with the Trump administration's plan to pad the pockets of the ultra-wealthy with dollars that belong to working families. The choice they're putting before us is making your life worse to make billionaires' lives better. While Americans face rising costs – including the rising costs from Trump's reckless tariffs – and worry about sending their kids to school hungry, Republicans are going full steam ahead with their budget plan that leaves New Jersey behind.
