Justice Democrat Darializa Avila Chevalier just defeated a five-term, AIPAC-backed incumbent and won the Democratic primary for New York’s 13th congressional district!

We just took down one of the last members of the New York political machine in a MASSIVE victory for our progressive movement. It comes 8 years after Justice Democrats’ first major primary win in NYC, when Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez unseated powerful, longtime incumbent Rep. Joe Crowley.
We recruited Darializa to run for Congress after numerous community members nominated her, and helped her build and launch one of the most impressive underdog campaigns in the country.
A working-class Afro-Latina raised by Dominican immigrant parents, Darializa has spent her life organizing for the people typical politicians leave behind:
- She fought to free Abdikadir Mohamed from ICE detention during Trump's Muslim ban.
- She organized Columbia's encampment in solidarity with Palestinians.
- She stood up for Mahmoud Khalil when ICE abducted him from his apartment.
- She is a proud union member of UAW and a public defense investigator at the Harlem Neighborhood Defender Services.
She doesn't just talk about the movement — she’s actually helped build it.
When it became clear that Darializa could beat Do-Nothing Democrat Rep. Adriano Espaillat, the establishment, corporate lobbies, and their super PACs swooped in to spend over $6.7 million to try and save him.
Just days before Election Day, it was finally confirmed what many already assumed: AIPAC was funneling money directly to BOLD America PAC, the single largest spender in this race. Then, it was revealed that the Democratic Majority for Israel (DMFI) is funneling money into United for Progress. Both likely funneled millions more to other pop-up PACs in this race, since any money transferred in June will not be reported until after polls close.
But their dark money wasn’t enough to win. Thanks to grassroots supporters like you, we the people helped Dari fight back — and together, we beat them! Now, we’re sending a champion for working people, Medicare for All, and babies not bombs to Congress.
This district voted for democratic socialist Zohran Mamdani by 19 points in last year’s mayoral primary — even as Adriano proudly endorsed fellow Democratic old guard member Andrew Cuomo.
Electing Darializa today further reflects just how ready New Yorkers uptown and in the Bronx are to move on from decades of machine politics. This was a fight for the soul of the Democratic Party, and we won. But our work isn’t over.
