Robert Reich | Thanking You

Robert Reich, Robert Reich's Blog
Reich writes: "The only good thing Trump has done is to awaken many of us to injustices that have plagued our country for centuries."

Over the past four years, we’ve taken to the streets to raise our voices – from protecting the sovereignty of Indigenous land and water, to demanding an end to systemic racism and police brutality, to fighting back against nonstop attacks on reproductive freedom, and so much more.

This unprecedented wave of activism has made one thing clear: The American people are fired up.

And now we are taking that momentum to the ballot box. We are voting not only for ourselves and our family’s future, but for our community, for those whose votes have been suppressed, and for the survival of American democracy itself.

We’ve made millions of phone calls, sent thousands of letters, and knocked on who knows how many doors. We’ve mobilized our families, friends, and neighbors to head to the polls.

We are a multi-racial, multi-class coalition that’s come together in unprecedented solidarity to send this racist, narcissistic man packing.

Police Captain Who Said Biden Voters Should Get a 'Bullet in Their Skull' Has Been Put on Leave
Trone Dowd, VICE
Dowd writes: "An Alabama police captain who said Joe Biden voters should get 'a bullet in their skull' has been placed on administrative leave."

The Alabama officer only made it worse when he tried to explain his Facebook comment later.

Capt. Scott Walden of the Flomaton Police Department could face termination for writing the graphic comment under a fellow Trump supporter’s post on Facebook.

“Idiots that voted for Biden hated Trump enough to throw the country away,” the person commented, to which Walden replied, “they need to line up ev1 of them and put a bullet in their skull for treason.”

The comment was screen-shotted and began circulating on social media Wednesday. Walden later deleted the post, but the damage was done. After receiving an undisclosed number of complaints about the captain’s words, the Flomaton Police Department launched an internal investigation and placed the captain on leave.

“The Flomaton Police Department treasures the community’s trust, and this is achieved through transparency regarding public information,” the department said in a statement Thursday evening. “The Flomaton Police Department holds officer’s conduct to the highest standard and will continue to do so. Copies of the comments and complaints have been acquired and retained for Internal Investigations.

Walden later argued online that his comments had been misconstrued, saying he didn’t mean that all Democrats need to be executed, just the ones who commit treason, according to screenshots taken by CBS affiliate WHNT.

“The comment even says TREASON but someone has run rampant saying I was meaning liberal n Democrats,” he wrote. “Well #1 I don’t care who you vote for, #2 the comment was about treason and what should happen to the ones who are charged for committing treason. So either you trying to stir the pot or you are ok with someone committing treason but not ok with someone who says they should be shot. This is the world we live in.”

While Walden can ask for a fair hearing in order to save his job, it may be a bit of a battle. Flomaton Mayor Dewey Bondurant told local media that Walden has had a history of making controversial comments on social media, something he’s warned him about before, and that he personally wants to see him removed from his post.

“That’s what I wanted to do to start with, but by law, I can’t,” the mayor said Thursday.

It’s been a tough few days for some of the president’s most passionate supporters around the country. After a promising start on Election Night, the president’s chances for reelection have dwindled significantly. Supporters in Michigan, Arizona, Georgia and Pennsylvania have protested outside of counting locations demanding that officials count the ballots properly and fairly, despite there being no evidence of illicit activity in the tallying process.

That hasn’t stopped President Trump from fomenting conspiracy. Thursday evening, Trump took to the White House Briefing Room and spewed lies attempting to delegitimize mail-in ballots as illegal and tried to claim victory in states he continues to lose traction in. As it stands now, Biden is set to officially win the election before the end of the day Friday.

A Record-Breaking 6 Native Americans Were Elected to Congress on Tuesday
Caitlin O'Kane, CBS News
O'Kane writes: "Six Native American and Native Hawaiian were elected to the House of Representatives on Tuesday - a record-breaking number."

ix Native American and Native Hawaiian were elected to the House of Representatives on Tuesday — a record-breaking number.

Democratic Representative Sharice Davids won reelection in Kansas, CBS News projects. She defeated Amanda Adkins, becoming the only Democrat representing Kansas in the House.

In Hawaii, Democratic candidate Kaiali'i Kahele defeated his Republican challenger Joe Akana, CBS News projects. Kahele will be only the second Native Hawaiian to represent the state in Congress.

In Oklahoma, CBS News projects both Representative Tom Cole and Representative Markwayne Mullin, two Republicans, won reelection.

Democratic Congresswoman Debra Haaland of New Mexico also won reelection. Republican Yvette Herrell also won in New Mexico.

According to Indian Country Today, a total of 13 Native American candidates were competing for House seats this year. The six winners have set a record. The group is split evenly by party — three Democrats and three Republicans.

In 2019, Cole and Haaland became co-chairs of the bipartisan Congressional Native American Caucus, which "seeks to educate members of Congress and encourage an open dialogue about issues affecting Native Americans," according to a press release from Cole's office.

"As part of this mission, the caucus regularly convenes briefings, considers the impact of legislation on tribal nations and provides a forum for members of Congress to exchange information, ideas and research." In 2016 only four member of Congress were Native American, according to the release.

Cole is a member of the Chickasaw Nation of Oklahoma. Haaland is a member of the Pueblo of Laguna who also has Jemez Pueblo heritage.

Davids, who in 2018 became the first Native American congresswoman, is also one of the few openly gay women in Congress. She is a member of the Ho-Chunk Nation.

Herrell is a member of the Cherokee Nation, according to the Albuquerque Journal. Representative Markwayne Mullin is a member of the Cherokee Nation as well.

Kahele, who served as a state senator in Hawaii, is of Native Hawaiian ancestry; his family comes from the small fishing village of Miloli'i in South Kona.

Gray Wolves to Be Removed From Endangered Species List
Nathan Rott, NPR
Rott writes: "Gray wolves, a species that has long been vilified and admired, will no longer receive federal protections under the Endangered Species Act in the Lower 48 U.S. states, the Trump administration announced Thursday."

The long-anticipated move is drawing praise from those who want to see the iconic species managed by state and tribal governments, and harsh criticism from those who believe federal protections should remain in place until wolves inhabit more of their historical range. Gray wolves used to exist across most of North America.

"After more than 45 years as a listed species, the gray wolf has exceeded all conservation goals for recovery," said Interior Secretary David Bernhardt, announcing the delisting, which will revert management of wolf populations to local wildlife agencies.

Federal wildlife officials are hailing the move as a success story, similar to endangered species recovery stories such as the bald eagle and American alligator.

After being nearly wiped clean from the contiguous U.S. by the mid-20th century, there are now more than 6,000 gray wolves in the Lower 48 states, largely clustered in the Northern Rocky Mountains and the Western Great Lakes region.

Critics are calling the move premature, though, and are already promising to sue.

"This is no 'Mission Accomplished' moment for wolf recovery," said Kristen Boyles, an attorney for Earthjustice. "Wolves are only starting to get a toehold in places like Northern California and the Pacific Northwest, and wolves need federal protection to explore habitat in the Southern Rockies and the Northeast."

Some critics are portraying the move as another environmental attack by the Trump administration, which has rolled back dozens of environmental regulations, including protections for endangered species and migratory birds. But wolves have a complicated history that doesn't fit cleanly into the bipartisan rancor that now dominates U.S. environmental policies.

After being hunted, trapped, poisoned and harassed to the point of near extirpation in the contiguous U.S., all gray wolves south of Canada were given federal protections under the Endangered Species Act in 1978.

Under that protection, their numbers slowly recovered in the Great Lakes region, and in 1995 federal wildlife officials reintroduced gray wolves to central Idaho and Yellowstone National Park, where their population has since flourished.

In 2013, the Obama administration also proposed to delist gray wolves, saying that the species had rebounded to the point where they were no longer at risk of extinction and should be managed by state and tribal governments.

A couple of years earlier, wolf populations in Montana and Idaho were delisted by a congressional budget rider, authored by a Democrat and Republican senator in each of those states who were pressured by agricultural and sportsmen groups. Wolves are an apex predator that, at times, kill livestock. Subsequent lawsuits saw gray wolves get delisted, relisted and delisted again in Wyoming.

Today, state wildlife agencies manage wolf populations in Montana, Idaho and Wyoming, and hunting of the species is permitted.

Similar hunting seasons are expected in some Midwestern states if the national delisting survives the anticipated court challenges, and wildlife groups contend that hunting seasons will limit wolves' ability to repopulate other parts of the country.

Randy Johnson, a large carnivore specialist for Wisconsin's Department of Natural Resources, told Wisconsin Public Radio this month that if wolf management fell back to the state, it would use all of the tools available to find a balance "between a healthy and sustainable wolf population, but also addressing those social concerns and livestock concerns when and where needed."

Aaron Darr: STATEMENT ON THE OUTCOME OF THE 2020 PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION

STATEMENT ON THE OUTCOME OF THE 2020 PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION:
It’s no secret that Joe Biden has endured tremendous pain and loss.
In the past 4 years, especially this year alone, we’ve seen 240,000 Americans die from COVID-19.
Deaths that were preventable had we not had an administration that “downplayed” the virus, science, medicine, and best practices (social distancing and face masks).
So many Americans petrified in their last moments who would die alone. Families and loved ones who will never have closure because they never had the chance to say goodbye.
I believe everything happens for a reason. I wonder if the loss and tragedy Joe Biden has experienced in his own life prepared him to run for president at the time in which America needed him the most during a period of loss for so many Americans. He understands our loss, our heartache, because he has lived it.
I only hope and pray that those who did not support President Elect Joe Biden will give him the chance I did to President Trump to be the American president we needed him to be. Unfortunately, President Trump never rose to the occasion. I do believe that Joe Biden will.
Joe Biden may have run for president as a democrat, but he is now going to be a president for all of America.
I know some of you who support Trump are disappointed or feel lost or hopeless. I understand, I felt that way 4 years ago when Hillary lost. Your joy then was my loss. My joy now, is your loss.
My point being, we all suffer loss, whether it be an election or the loss of a loved one. I just hope we come together to understand and appreciate that we have so much more in common than what separates us.

 JOE BIDEN

POSSIBLE ASSASSINATION PLOT... By N.C. Man Arrested With Guns, Explosives

TRANSITION OF POWER! IT'S SIMPLE! JANUARY 20TH!

Someone asked what happens if Trump refused to leave on January 20. This is what a presidential historian wrote about it.
On March 4th 1801 the second president of the United States John Adams refused to hand over office to his main rival at the 1800 election Thomas Jefferson. The rule of midday January 20 had not been written yet. Despite his stubbornness THE OFFICE SIMPLY LEFT HIM!

After Thomas Jefferson was sworn in at an event which the incumbent refused to attend Whitehouse staff started to remove the president’s belongings from the White house (Adams was the first president to reside at the new official residence). All security organs cut all official communication. All presidential staff stopped taking instructions from Adams – THE OFFICE MOVED.

From that time all incumbents at the White House prepare early to leave in-case they see signs of losing to avoid humiliation by the independent organs of state (The Military, The secret Service, The CIA, FBI and all White House staff. They all operate under a code - that of serving a man/woman who has carried the WILL of the people at an election)

As soon as Biden clinches the 270 votes and is officially declared by all returning officers in the states the following is going to happen

1- The secret service divides its attention between the incumbent at the incoming President.
2- CIA begins to brief both (including top secret intelligence which is traditionally reserved for one individual-the commander in chief)
3- The counter intelligence teams of the CIA which ‘spy’ on The CIA also begin to brief both
4- Whitehouse staff begin to prepare to re-do the house in-line with the taste of the president elect.
5- At Midday on January 20 Whitehouse staff remove all his belongings from the house and bring in the belongings of the new president (they wait for no one’s instructions)
6- The deductions for White house rent on Trump’s salary stops in January
7- The deductions for Whitehouse rent begins on Joe Biden’s presidential salary in January
8- Melania Trump stops being the boss of Whitehouse on January 20 at midday
9- Dr. Jill Biden becomes the boss of Whitehouse on January 20 at midday
10- At midday on January 20 all the power organs of the US cut official communication with Trump; The pentagon, The CIA, The FBI, The Attorney General. The secret service maintains minimal communication since it is going to guard the x-president all his life.
11- The BEAST and AIRFORCE ONE salutes Trump for the last time and move their attention to Biden. The BEAST begins to carry Biden’s blood samples as is the tradition.
Without instructions from any one! It has been so for over 200 years.

This Is How Thousands Of Americans Are Preparing To Take On Trump If He Refuses To Leave Office

“When Trump a few weeks ago began saying he wouldn’t commit to a peaceful transfer of power, that’s when I decided I needed to do it.”

One day late last month, longtime activist George Lakey was yet again training people on how to peacefully resist a coup. But this time, he was not in Moscow or Bangkok or one of the many other far-off places where he has traveled over his 70-year career as a sociologist and writer promoting democracy and nonviolent forms of protest. He was in the United States, at his home in suburban Philadelphia.

On the other end of Lakey’s Zoom webinar were around 1,000 American voters — 500 more, he noted, than had shown up the week before — from around the country who were glued to their screens, taking careful notes.

As President Donald Trump has spent the last few months planting seeds of doubt about the integrity of the US’s electoral process and urging his supporters to “go into the polls and watch very carefully,” dozens of advocacy groups, mostly progressive, have been hard at work trying to organize and train everyday Americans for what to do if their democracy appears to fall apart before their eyes.

“When Trump a few weeks ago began saying he wouldn’t commit to a peaceful transfer of power, that’s when I decided I needed to do it,” said Lisa Graustein, a 45-year-old former public school teacher in Boston, of her decision to give up two hours of her day to partake in a training on the finer points of mass demonstrations, peaceful sit-ins, and putting public pressure on elected officials.

Graustein, who now runs a food distribution center, said she had been “semi active” in local political and activist causes in the past. Still, that was a far cry from pondering the questions Lakey asked in the training, such as: Are you a person who will stand up to authority and be a voice for others? Or hearing Lakey assure the group that dictatorships fall when the masses rise up and that nonviolent resistance — like in Argentina in 1987 and the Soviet Union in 1991 — could be used to defeat a possible power grab by Trump.

But Graustein said she and all her friends and work colleagues are anxious about the election. “People not active in previous elections are active now,” she said. And so when someone in her Quaker community told her about the training, she signed up.

The idea behind the effort was to “actually help prevent” the possibility of a coup, explained Eileen Flanagan, who moderated the training with Lakey.

The training was organized by Choose Democracy, a Washington, DC–based group that describes itself as a “crew of organizers, activists, trainers, academics, and concerned citizens preparing for the scenario of a coup in 2020.” Choose Democracy has held three training sessions so far, each larger than the last; the first training of this month had more than 1,500 trainees and more than 3,500 have been involved in all so far, said Flanagan, a member of the political action committee. The events have become so popular that the group has organized six more this month, including two designed specifically for trainers to learn how to coach more people in their communities.

Another participant, a West Coast–based healthcare union organizer, told BuzzFeed News that prior to this election she had never been involved in an exercise like Lakey’s. But this year, she felt the need to take action.

Listening to Lakey discuss the history of attempted power grabs and political moments fraught with peril in other countries, “it really brought home this idea, ‘Wow, we’re really about to cross a rubicon,’” said the union organizer, who spoke to BuzzFeed News on the condition of anonymity because she was not authorized by her employer to speak to the media.

Choose Democracy and Lakey are far from the only ones preparing for what many Trump opponents believe would be a doomsday scenario for democracy.

The preparations include voter education campaigns and planning street protests, and getting public officials to pledge to not accept the results until every vote is counted. Some groups are using political and election experts to conduct war game–type exercises.

Erica Chenoweth, an American political scientist and professor of public policy at the Harvard Kennedy School, told BuzzFeed News that the planning for a potential coup is unprecedented in US history.

“First, there’s genuine talk of trying to avoid a coup. And the talk about this is with a level of seriousness that I think we haven’t seen in the country before,” she said. “Second, there’s a genuine national infrastructure around coordinating effective people power and avoiding an election power grab that is totally novel in American politics.”

That infrastructure is being built with initiatives like Choose Democracy and many others. Another organization is Protect the Results, which was launched by Stand Up America and Indivisible, two progressive groups formed after 2016 to fight the Trump administration’s agenda. Protect the Results is a coalition made up of more than 100 bipartisan organizations composed of millions of members nationwide. It is also gearing up in case Trump prematurely declares victory; the organization will have a robust national response in the form of street protests in all 50 states to demand that every single vote be counted before a winner is decided.

“Our view is, in any scenario where Trump might refuse to concede or choose to contest the results, it will be incredibly important for Americans to respond swiftly and for there to be a plan in place for grassroots mobilization,” Sean Eldridge, the founder and president of Stand Up America, told BuzzFeed News. “We’ve already seen Trump lie about voter fraud and demand foreign election interference. He’s behind in the polls and desperate. He’s clearly willing to bully and cheat his way through this election.

“So we are signaling to our community members that the most important thing they can do is to make a plan to vote and vote early — but that the work might not end on Election Day, and we might also need to be prepared to protect the results if Trump tries to put corrupt pressure on election officials or tries to undermine the results.”

The coalition includes members of the Black Lives Matter movement and organizations like Women’s March who have experience mobilizing large groups of people in multiple states.

This week, Protect the Results launched a map which Americans can use to RSVP for a protest near them — should it become necessary to take to the streets to demonstrate opposition to what the government is doing. As of Friday, the map already had more than 160 protests planned for Nov. 4, from Boston to Portland, Oregon, and everywhere in between.

Many of the groups began putting protest plans into motion after a bipartisan group of more than 100 current and former senior government and political campaign staffers and other experts in June organized the Transition Integrity Project, an exercise that has war-gamed various scenarios in which the presidential election could be disrupted. Its findings showed that an overwhelming protest presence in the streets “may be decisive factors,” the project’s website said.

The groups are also planning for Election Day itself. The nonpartisan grassroots group Common Cause is appointing “election protection volunteers,” which it describes as “voters’ first line of defense against restrictive election laws, coronavirus-related voting disruptions, or anything else that could silence their voices.”

Sylvia Albert, director of voting and elections for Common Cause, told BuzzFeed News that the volunteers will monitor the polls from outside voting stations while others watch for online disinformation and field calls to a hotline set up to take reports of voting problems, which could be anything from a lack of wheelchair access to illegal campaigning inside polling stations to explicit voter intimidation. In 2016 and 2018, the group had about 6,500 volunteers; this year, the number went up exponentially to more than 36,000.

Albert said the thousands of unarmed volunteers outside polling stations will be trained to handle situations in which they face intimidation or violence, although she believes that anything of the sort is unlikely to happen.

One such newly minted polling station observer is Jessica Mann, a 44-year-old social worker in Austin, Texas. Since early voting began in the state on Oct. 13, she has monitored activities outside various stations in three-hour shifts. A first-time-volunteer, she said she was motivated to do something after hearing Trump encourage supporters to come out and watch for “fraud” inside polling stations which raised fears of voter intimidation.

“I wanted to be there in case his monitors showed up,” Mann said. So far, she hasn’t seen any Trump supporters intimidating voters or faced intimidation herself. Under Texas state law on electioneering, Mann can only monitor a station from outside a 100-foot perimeter. (Other states have similar laws.) But she has sensed that people are more on edge than usual. “It’s a tense time and it’s an emotional time,” she said.

Many election experts worry about the probability of tense and possibly even violent confrontations this year due to challenges posed by the coronavirus pandemic, tensions surrounding nationwide anti-police brutality protests, and Trump’s recent call for the violent men-only group Proud Boys to “stand back and stand by, which has emboldened far-right militant groups.

threat assessment issued this month by the Department of Homeland Security showed that the agency also warned of the potential for political violence at and around the polls, particularly from extremists. “Open-air, publicly accessible parts of physical election infrastructure, such as campaign-associated mass gatherings, polling places and voter registration events, would be the most likely flashpoints for potential violence,” it said.

The Justice Department said it is planning to station officials in a command center at the FBI headquarters to coordinate the federal response to any election disturbances, the Washington Post reported, citing officials familiar with the matter.

Talk of a coup is not only coming from the progressive political wing. For their part, Trump-supporting conservatives have claimed the anti-coup preparation from the predominantly left-wing groups is actually the foundation of a coup itself being planned by Democrats.

The New York Times reported that after right-wing commentators began pushing disinformation about a Democrat-led coup, the unfounded allegation had spread quickly across social media. The Times’ analysis found mentions of it had “made its way into at least 938 Facebook groups, 279 Facebook pages, 33 YouTube videos and hundreds of tweets.”

With the heightened rhetoric and finger-pointing, experts say we are likely in for a hot Election Day and a chaotic post-election situation.

“With the exception of the ‘big Biden win’ scenario, each of our exercises reached the brink of catastrophe, with massive disinformation campaigns, violence in the streets and a constitutional impasse,” Rosa Brooks, a law professor at Georgetown University and cofounder of the Transition Integrity Project, wrote in the Washington Post about the war games she conducted with colleagues. “In two scenarios (‘Trump win’ and ‘extended uncertainty’) there was still no agreement on the winner by Inauguration Day, and no consensus on which candidate should be assumed to have the ability to issue binding commands to the military or receive the nuclear codes.

“In the ‘narrow Biden win’ scenario, Trump refused to leave office and was ultimately escorted out by the Secret Service — but only after pardoning himself and his family and burning incriminating documents.”

Lakey said he isn’t certain Trump will try to hold onto power no matter the election’s outcome. But the president has previously threatened to use the military to quash unrest, and he is now increasingly signaling that he could challenge the election results if they do not turn out in his favor. With this in mind, Lakey stressed the importance of being prepared.

“It’s like buying fire insurance,” he said. “You hope your home won’t catch on fire, but you want to have it if the worst should happen.” ●
