How I learned to question a witness

WE NEED KATIE PORTER IN CONGRESS!
SHE IS ONE AMAZING WOMAN WHO IS WELL INFORMED & WORKS FOR AMERICANS!
A GEM!

Katie Porter for Congress

There’s one thing that most prepared me to effectively question a witness during a Congressional hearing: being a mom.

Take, for example, when I ask one of my sons if they’ve done their homework. Sometimes you get the ‘Well, I...’ and I say ‘No, the answer is no.’

I still haven’t met a witness or constituent who was as tough on me as my kids. I mean, one of them calls me a “neoliberal.”

My time as a professor also taught me how to cut through the BS answers people give. I could tell when students were hungover and hadn’t done the reading, and I can tell when government officials don’t know things they should about the agencies they oversee (looking at you, Postmaster DeJoy).

Effectively questioning witnesses isn’t about calling them out for a TikTok moment. It’s about doing my job as a Member of Congress to oversee those in power and hold them accountable. I’m proud to do it, and thankful for my kids and the students who allowed me to sharpen my skills.

Katie is running for re-election in California’s 47th district, which includes Irvine and coastal Orange County. This purple district contains an equal number of Democrats and Republicans and is a must-win for Democrats. Consider pitching in today so we have the resources to keep Katie in Congress fighting for working people.

A woman in a hot air balloon realizes she is lost.

A woman in a hot air balloon realizes she is lost. She lowers her altitude and spots a man fishing from a boat below. She shouts to him, "Excuse me, can you help me? I promised a friend I would meet him an hour ago, but I don't know where I am."
The man consults his portable GPS and replies, "You're in a hot air balloon, approximately 30 feet above a ground elevation of 2,346 feet above sea level. You are at 31 degrees, 14.97 minutes north latitude and 100 degrees, 49.09 minutes west longitude.
She rolls her eyes and says, "You must be a Democrat!"
"I am," replies the man. "How did you know?"
"Well," answers the balloonist, "everything you tell me is technically correct, but I have no idea what to do with your information, and I'm still lost. Frankly, you're not much help to me."
The man smiles and responds, "You must be a Republican."
"I am, replies the balloonist. "How did you know?"
"Well," says the man, "You don't know where you are or where you're going. You've risen to where you are due to a large quantity of hot air. You made a promise that you have no idea how to keep, and now you expect me to solve your problem. You're in exactly the same position you were in before we met

but, but, somehow, now it's my fault."

LOOK IN THE MIRROR!

September 11

Today marks 21 years since the attack on our nation on September 11th. It was a dark day for our nation that I will never forget.

I hope you will join me in taking a moment to remember those we lost and hold their loved ones in our hearts. We remember not only those who died in the violence of that day but also the brave first responders and our service members who stepped up to protect our nation.

These courageous people put their lives at risk to defend our freedoms and security, and many of those who survived that day are still struggling to get the support they need and deserve.

We owe it to them to recommit to the work of building a peaceful, safe and prosperous future for every single American, regardless of race and creed.

There is a great deal of pain for so many today, but it’s also a reminder that those who sought to attack and undermine our democracy did not succeed. In the face of incredible tragedy, we witnessed the resilience and strength of the American people.

Thank you for joining us in honoring the lost, the fallen and our heroes today.
