DeSantis's Law Jailed A U.S. Citizen For ICE. His Birth Certificate Was In The Courtroom.
A Georgia-born U.S. citizen was jailed under DeSantis's immigration law and held for ICE after a judge saw his birth certificate. Rachel Plakon voted for it. Darryl Block is running against her.
Juan Carlos Lopez-Gomez was 20 years old. He was born in Georgia. He is an American citizen.
He was riding in a car in Florida when a trooper pulled it over for speeding. He was arrested under Ron DeSantis’s new immigration law.
In court, someone held up his U.S. birth certificate. The judge looked at it, and at his Social Security card. She said the charge should not stand.
Then she said she could not let him go. ICE had asked the jail to hold him.
A Judge Had Already Blocked The Law
Twelve days before his arrest, a federal judge had blocked that law.
Florida arrested him under it anyway. DeSantis’s attorney general told police the court order did not bind them. The judge later held him in contempt.
His mother could not see him. He spent more than a day in jail. Then a federal agent drove him to a Wendy’s to meet her.
If It Can Happen To Him, It Can Happen To Anyone
He had a birth certificate. A judge saw it. He still sat in a cell waiting for ICE.
Trump’s ICE is asking jails across the country to hold people the same way.
Rachel Plakon Voted For It
Rachel Plakon is a Republican in the Florida House. When DeSantis’s law came up for a vote, she voted yes.
Her voters are casting ballots right now. Early voting opened a week ago.
The Man Running Against Her Called It Cruel
Darryl Block is the Democrat running for Plakon’s seat. He has said in public that Florida’s crackdown is “cruel, expensive, and completely disregards the US Constitution.”
He started out as a social worker. He became a lawyer and a mediator, and he has helped service members in crisis.

Nine Days Left. Early Voting Ends In Seven.
Election Day is November 3rd. Early voting ends November 1st. People are filling out ballots today.
Block’s campaign is signing up regular people to knock doors this week. The money pays for those door knockers and for mail that tells voters how Plakon voted.
After November 3rd, no amount of money can knock a single door. Block needs it in the next nine days.
