Just last month, it was announced that the Department of Veterans Affairs would be cutting 30,000 positions come September – the largest staffing cut in VA history. These staffing cuts will have catastrophic effects on our veterans and their abilities to access vital services. Ultimately, our veterans will suffer from this decision. Hey there. It’s Peggy Flanagan. Sometimes I get asked how this little kid…  …ended up serving as Minnesota Lt. Governor, co-chairing the Democratic National Convention, and running for U.S. Senate.  Well, I grew up in a family where women just did the work. My grandmother was involved in party politics before it was, you know, polite for women to do that work. My mom raised me by herself in St. Louis Park. We had a home because of a Section 8 housing voucher, and public programs helped her pay for my school lunch, health insurance, and child care.  I believe we should wrap our arms around our neighbors in need because my neighbors did that for me. Minnesota is a potluck state. People can come from all walks of life, have different experiences, and yet share the same values. If it snows, we’ll shovel your driveway. If you move into the neighborhood, we’ll bring you a hotdish or bars. Kids who grow up in Section 8 housing don’t get to run for the U.S. Senate often. But I am committed to giving back to the community that has given me everything. I’m not going to lie and say this race is going to be easy. It’s going to take a massive effort. Before I ran for the U.S. Senate, I was an investigative journalist leading a team that exposed corruption and human rights abuses worldwide. This report in The New York Times reminded me of what I saw in many of those investigations: More and more, the atmosphere under Trump reminds me of countries where dissent is silenced by intimidation. From the article: Fired federal workers who are worried about losing their homes ask not to be quoted by name. University presidents fearing that millions of dollars in federal funding could disappear are holding their fire. Chief executives alarmed by tariffs that could hurt their businesses are on mute. “When you see important societal actors — be it university presidents, media outlets, C.E.O.s, mayors, governors — changing their behavior in order to avoid the wrath of the government, that’s a sign that we’ve crossed the line into some form of authoritarianism,” said Steven Levitsky, a professor of government at Harvard and the co-author of the influential 2018 book “How Democracies Die.” This is unacceptable in the United States of America.  As Trump dismantles checks on his power and purges the government to fill every office with loyalists, more and more Americans are too afraid of retaliation to speak up.
