57 Deaths from Malnutrition in Gaza Amid Crippling Israeli Blockade

57 Deaths from Malnutrition in Gaza Amid Crippling Israeli Blockade

Gaza (Quds News Network)- At least 57 people, the majority of whom were children, sick, and elder people, have died from malnutrition in the Gaza Strip since the start of the Israeli genocide in October 2023, as Israel’s blockade of the Palestinian enclave enters its third month.

Since March 2, Israel has closed Gaza’s main crossings, halting the flow of food, medical aid, and other humanitarian supplies. This blockade has caused a severe and unprecedented decline in living conditions, with human rights organizations accusing Israel of using starvation as a weapon of war against Palestinians.

A statement by the Gaza Government Media Office on Saturday confirmed that the number of deaths from malnutrition is expected to increase as the crossings into Gaza remain closed and the entry of aid, baby formula and nutritional supplements have been prevented by Israel.

It added that the vast majority of victims were children as well as sick and elderly people.

It said: “We condemn in the strongest terms the continued use of food by the Israeli occupation as a weapon of war and its imposition of a stifling blockade against more than 2.4 million people in the Gaza Strip by completely closing the crossings for the 63rd consecutive day.”

The Office called on “the international community, humanitarian organisations and human rights organisations to take immediate and effective action and exert pressure by all means to open the Rafah border crossing and all other crossings.”

On Saturday, a baby girl, identified as Janan Saleh al-Sakafi, died of malnutrition and dehydration in the Rantisi Hospital, west of Gaza City.

Israel also resumed its genocide in Gaza on March 18 after violating the ceasefire agreement signed in January, killing over 2,200 Palestinians and wounding more than 5,700—mostly children and women, according the Palestinian Health Ministry.

The United Nations has repeatedly warned of humanitarian catastrophe, with the enclave on the brink of “full-scale famine conditions.”

On Friday, Philippe Lazzarini, head of the UN agency for the Palestinian refugees (UNRWA), said the Israeli siege is collectively punishing children, women, older people and men in Gaza.

The UN’s World Food Programme said last week that its food supplies had been “depleted” amid the siege, warning that community kitchens upon which thousands of Palestinians rely would be forced to close.

Hundreds of thousands of Palestinians of all ages are experiencing high levels of food insecurity in Gaza, according to the Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC) system, a global hunger watchdog.

Children in the enclave have not only faced relentless bombardment, but are also being deprived of essential goods, services and lifesaving care, UNICEF Executive Director Catherine Russell said in a statement on Friday.

“With each passing day of the aid blockade, they face the growing risk of starvation, illness and death – nothing can justify this,” Russell said. “The sea they used for fishing has been restricted. Bakeries are closing, water production is declining, and market shelves are almost bare.”

In the past month, she said, families have been forced to choose between showering, cleaning, and cooking as access to water is quickly deteriorating.
Vaccines are also running out, Russell warned, and diseases are spreading rapidly.

“Malnutrition is also on the rise,” she said, adding that more than 9,000 children have been admitted for treatment of acute malnutrition since the beginning of the year.

On Saturday, Dr. Munir al-Bursh, the General Director of the Ministry of Health, announced that Gaza has entered the fifth phase of famine. This phase poses the greatest danger to the lives of residents and means witnessing cases of mass deaths.

“We have seen a doubling in child mortality under the age of five, rising from 13 deaths per 1,000 children to 32 per 1,00”, al-Bursh said. “We call on the UN Security Council to declare a state of famine in Gaza and to open humanitarian corridors to deliver food and medicine.”

Gaza Enters Fifth Phase of Famine as Israel Continues to Block Aid for Third Month

Gaza has entered the fifth phase of famine, according to Moneer Al-Boursh, the General Director of the Ministry of Health. This phase poses the greatest danger to the lives of residents and means witnessing cases of mass deaths. The Israeli blockade continues to prevent essential supplies of food, medicine, and water from entering the strip.

“We have seen a doubling in child mortality under the age of five, rising from 13 deaths per 1,000 children to 32 per 1,00”, Al-Boursh said.  “We call on the UN Security Council to declare a state of famine in Gaza and to open humanitarian corridors to deliver food and medicine.”

Earlier this morning, baby girl named Janan Saleh al-Sakafi had died of malnutrition and dehydration at Rantisi Hospital, west of Gaza City. Since the onset of the ongoing Israeli genocide in October 2023, 57 people have died from malnutrition, as reported by Gaza’s Government Media Office.

The medical community in Gaza warns that the situation is critical. Nasser Medical Complex in Khan Younis stated that children are experiencing severe malnutrition, making medical follow-up difficult due to a lack of treatment supplies. The ongoing blockade indicates a catastrophic future for the children of Gaza.

Since March 2, Israel has closed Gaza’s main crossings, halting the flow of food, medical aid, and all humanitarian supplies. This blockade has led to a severe decline in living conditions. Human rights organizations stress that Israel uses starvation as a weapon of war against the Palestinian people.

The situation escalated further when Israel resumed its attacks on Gaza on March 18, violating a ceasefire agreement. Over 2,200 Palestinians have died, and more than 5,700 have been injured, with children and women bearing the brunt of the Israeli attacks.

The United Nations has repeatedly warned of a looming humanitarian catastrophe, stating that Gaza is on the brink of “full-scale famine conditions.” Philippe Lazzarini, head of the UN agency for Palestinian refugees (UNRWA), highlighted that the Israeli siege collectively punishes children, women, and the elderly.

The UN’s World Food Programme reported last week that its food supplies have been “depleted” amid the siege. Community kitchens, vital for thousands of Palestinians, face closure. Hundreds of thousands of people in Gaza are experiencing high levels of food insecurity, according to the Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC).

As Palestinians Starve and Freeze, Israeli Troops Unwind at Gaza 'Beachfront Resort'

As Palestinians Starve and Freeze, Israeli Troops Unwind at Gaza 'Beachfront Resort'

"And U.S. taxpayers are funding this," fumed one critic.

As the people of Gaza suffer hell on Earth, Israeli soldiers committing what the world increasingly recognizes as a genocide against them can now kick back and relax at a beachfront resort in the embattled strip and enjoy treated water from a desalination plant while Palestinians die from lack of water, food, and other necessities.

The Israeli outlet Ynet reported Thursday that Israel Defense Forces troops in northern Gaza are relaxing at a "beachfront resort" located "amid the devastation" wrought by the IDF's U.S.-backed 445-day assault, which, according to Gazan and international agencies, has left more than 164,000 Palestinians dead, maimed, or missing; millions more forcibly displaced, starved, or sickened; and most of the coastal enclave in ruins.

According to Ynet:

Throughout the retreat, beanbags are scattered for lounging. One soldier relaxes with an iced energy drink, while another enjoys a hot cappuccino paired with meringue cookies. Soldiers can shower and use pristine restroom facilities that feel "just like home." In the center of the green lawn, a long table is laden with lavish breakfasts reminiscent of a hotel buffet. For lunch and dinner, a barbecue station operates nonstop, serving more than the standard wings and hotdogs—steaks and other premium cuts are grilled to perfection... Additional comforts include a coffee bar with a large espresso machine, popcorn and cotton candy stations, and a lounge offering Belgian waffles and fresh pretzels.

David Turjeman, head of food services for the IDF's Southern Command, told Ynet: "You know this is Gaza, right? Yet we've created a sense of home here, with iced coffee, espresso, protein shakes, toast, shakshuka, fresh fruit, and even ice cream on warmer days."

As Palestinians suffer "complete psychological destruction" as a result of Israel's onslaught, IDF troops visiting the retreat "have access to mental health support from counselors and remote consultations." As Israeli forces besiege and attack Gaza's few remaining hospitals, the retreat offers "on-site care from a nurse and a paramedic," as well as "massages for sore backs and legs" and the services of a mobile dental clinic.

There's also a desalination plant capable of producing 60,000 liters of drinking water daily. This, as Human Rights Watch last week accused Israel of "extermination and acts of genocide" in Gaza "by intentionally depriving Palestinian civilians there of adequate access to water, most likely resulting in thousands of deaths."

Israeli soldiers expressed their surprise at the amenities available at the retreat.

"We didn't get a house, but the food is amazing, and the drinks are great," Sgt. Yaron Rabinovitch told Ynet.

Sgt. Daniel Vakrat said: "We didn't expect anything like this. It's an incredible morale booster."

Israeli total War Continues, with “No end in sight” for Palestinians in Gaza — Cold, Drenched, Homeless and Hungry

Ann Arbor (Informed Comment) – Muhannad Hadi, the special UN Humanitarian Coordinator for the Occupied Palestinian Territory, addressed the ambassadors of the UN Security Council states on Monday, Nov. 25, on the “ongoing devastation in Gaza,” which, he said, “persists relentlessly, with no resolution in sight” as winter approaches with its drenching rains and chilly […]

Ann Arbor (Informed Comment) – Muhannad Hadi, the special UN Humanitarian Coordinator for the Occupied Palestinian Territory, addressed the ambassadors of the UN Security Council states on Monday, Nov. 25, on the “ongoing devastation in Gaza,” which, he said, “persists relentlessly, with no resolution in sight” as winter approaches with its drenching rains and chilly temperatures, endangering lives.

Even as he was speaking, what is left of the Gaza government announced the grim news that this weekend storm surges along the coast destroyed 10,000 tents people had set up near the sea. Rain storms and wind have damaged 81% of refugee tents in Gaza, with 110,000 out of 135,000 tents needing to be immediately replaced.

Hadi warned that “the delivery of critical aid across Gaza is grinding to a halt.” He cautioned that as a result, the survival of two million people hangs in the balance.” He called on Israel to fulfill its responsibilities and to arrange for the swift and unimpeded delivery of humanitarian aid throughout the Gaza Strip.

Hadi explained that in recent weeks, the Israeli military has catastrophically escalated its attacks on North Gaza, with what he called “mass casualty incidents” taking place “with alarming frequency.”

He gave some examples. For instance, on November 10, some 36 Palestinians, among them women and children, were killed and others injured when Israeli fighter-jets bombed a multi-story building in Jabalya Al Balad. (A multi-story building means an apartment building where families live.) Then on November 16, in Beit Lahiya, two separate Israeli airstrikes reportedly claimed the lives of at least 65 Palestinians, including women and children, as buildings sheltering displaced individuals were targeted. And these are just a few of the “mass casualty” attacks the Israelis have committed recently.

Since October 6, he said, the Israeli military has issued numerous expulsion orders, forcing more than 100,000 Palestinians to flee, mostly with nothing but the clothes on their backs, from North Gaza to the south. (This expulsion of the civilian population is a consequence of Israel’s resumption of military ground operations in the north, an area they declared cleared of Hamas fighters last year this time. – JC).

That is more than the entire population of Santa Fe, New Mexico, the capital of the state.

These refugees have mainly flooded into Gaza City, which now has some 375,000 residents even though much of its infrastructure and most of its domiciles have been destroyed.

Hadi doesn’t say so here, but many observers have concluded that the Israeli military is engaged in an attempt at complete ethnic cleansing of the north, which is a major war crime. This charge is underlined by the Israeli pledge that none of the refugees from the north will ever be allowed back.

The Israelis have destroyed civilian governance in Gaza. As Jan Engeland, the head of the Norwegian Humanitarian Council, affirms “The police was bombed to pieces by Israel, and Israel is giving us aid routes that are unsafe.”

There is no law and order and no mechanism to enforce it, since the Israelis, despite being the occupying power, are disregarding their consequent obligations to provide security to civilians.

As a result, Hadi says, “Looting of humanitarian supplies by Palestinians is intensifying and becoming more organized and more violent.”

He explains that on November 16, a UN convoy carrying 109 truckloads of food supplies was violently looted by gangs, resulting in the loss of 97 trucks. Two days later the Gaza Ministry of Interior attempted to crack down hard on the looters, in a battle that left 20 people dead. He insists that law and order must be restored.

After that major incident of looting, food prices soared. Most famines don’t occur because of lack of food but because the food becomes too pricey for people to afford it.

These events affect all of Gaza. As for the north, the UN alleges that the Israelis have allowed almost no food aid into North Gaza for a month.

Save the Children writes, “About 130,000 children aged under 10 have been trapped for 50 days in areas in northern Gaza that are almost entirely inaccessible to aid workers and not receiving food or medical supplies despite warnings of famine.”

The Anadolu News Agency reports, “Tahani Saad, 55, a mother of five, told Anadolu that flour is now scarce in the markets, with prices soaring. A 25-kilogram bag of flour currently costs 900 Shekels (approximately $250). ‘We are forced to use spoiled flour which may cause illnesses to us,’ Tahani Saad added.”

Hadi underlines that “the level of essential goods, including humanitarian assistance, that has been allowed into Gaza is inadequate to meet the overwhelming needs of the population.”

"This Carnage Needs to Stop": Israel Bans Aid Groups from Gaza, Kills Over 1,000 in North Gaza Siege

COMMENTS:

Israeli human rights group B’Tselem reported “Since 1967 , Thousands of homes of Palestinians were demolished by Israel. This is part of war crime: The Fourth Geneva Convention prohibits the occupying state from destroying the property of civilians in occupied territory, ” Homes were usually demolished at night without residents being given any advance warning. The homes destroyed by security forces belonged to Palestinians who were not suspected of any involvement in causing harm to Israeli civilians or security forces. They were given no opportunity to plead their case before any instance and received no compensation for the damage they sustained. This policy of collective punishment inflicted lasting harm on thousands of people.

This policy constitutes collective punishment, which is prohibited and violates binding provisions of international law.

I wept just a few minutes into watching this. Thank you Amy, for giving us a window into what's happening in Gaza. Thank you for your coverage, thank you for your humanity. God bless you. Evil thrives when good men and women keep quiet. We will continue to speak out against this madness. We will not give up.

“Settler Violence = State Violence” Israeli human rights group B’Tselem, 25 November 2021 “Since occupying the West Bank in 1967, Israel has misappropriated more than 2 million dunams( 1 duman= 10763.9 square feet) of land throughout the West Bank. Israel has taken over some of these areas using official means: issuing military orders, declaring the area “state land,” a “firing zone” or a “nature reserve,”. Other areas have been effectively taken over by settlers through daily acts of violence, including attacks on Palestinians and their property. Settler violence against Palestinians is part of the strategy employed by Israel’s apartheid regime, which seeks to take over more and more West Bank land. The state fully supports and assists these acts of violence,

This is barbaric and savagery. This is an absolute outrage to humanity and I'm outraged at my government for standing by and supporting this! We the people do not support this and this must cease! I don't know why I should pay my taxes - for this??? Not in my name 🇵🇸🇵🇸🇵🇸🙏🏽

Northern Gaza, which is one-fourth of Gaza’s territory, has been under siege for 23 days. The nearly 400,000 residents who had remained there after a year of war face inhumane conditions as food, water, and medicines have run out, and aid is not reaching them More than 800 people have been killed in three weeks.🇵🇸♥️😪🇵🇸♥️😪

This shows the level of the greed. “Israel’s Netanyahu brings his dirty laundry to Washington. Literally.”The Washington Post “The Netanyahus are the only ones who bring actual suitcases of dirty laundry for us to clean,” said one U.S. official, who like others spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss the details of a foreign leader’s visits. “After multiple trips, it became clear this was intentional.” Over the years, the Israeli leader has developed a reputation among the staff at the U.S. president’s guesthouse for bringing special cargo on his trips to Washington: bags and suitcases full of dirty laundry, according to U.S. officials familiar with the matter. The clothes are cleaned for the prime minister free of charge by the U.S. staff, a perk that is available to all foreign leaders but sparingly taken advantage of given the short stays of busy heads of state.
