Tell Pres. Biden: Secure a ceasefire NOW

 

Last week, the president demonstrated pivotal leadership by restricting weapons transfers to Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu as he goes forward with his disastrous invasion of Rafah.

It’s a welcome shift and let’s be clear: We got to this point because of months of relentless activism and advocacy — and our work isn’t finished.

We won’t stop until we secure a ceasefire that can save lives in Gaza, bring the hostages home, and set people in Israel and Palestine on a path to sustainable peace.

That’s why we’re joining Combatants for Peace, a joint Palestinian-Israeli community made up of former Israeli and Palestinian fighters, refuseniks, and non-violent activists, to dig deep and go further. Because while President Biden just took a huge step in the right direction, we could lose this critically gained momentum without a groundswell of support and pressure necessary to push him to hold firm.

Today, thousands of people across the globe are joining Combatants for Peace and the Parents Circle–Families Forum virtually at the 19th Israeli-Palestinian Joint Memorial Day Ceremony.

We must mourn the heartbreaking loss of life and suffering we’ve witnessed in the past seven months. Especially now, when the world seems so dark, it is important to find a way to heal — together.

Because we are the people who refuse to look away. We are the ones building the world we all want and deserve: One where we all live and thrive without the threat of violence.

But that’s also why, once we’ve taken a moment to reflect, we recommit to our cause.

The only thing that has ever safely reunited hostages with their families without further endangering people across Israel, Palestine, and beyond is a ceasefire. We saw it back in November, and we desperately need to see the same pause in violence again today.

Right now, a diplomatic path to end the violence is still possible. President Biden has to be ready to respond with the kind of pressure necessary to make a ceasefire a reality — and that’s where you come in. The U.S. government seems poised to use its influence for good. I hope you’re having a good Mother’s Day, and if this holiday hits you hard, my heart goes out to you. I’m thinking about my mother today, and I’m thinking about a time when she dug deep to take care of our family. After my daddy had a heart attack, he couldn’t work for a while. Bills piled up. We lost our family station wagon. It looked like the house would be next to go. At night, I’d overhear my parents talk, and that's when I learned words like “mortgage” and “foreclosure.” One day, I walked into my parents’ bedroom. My mother’s face was red and puffy. A dress was laid out over the bedspread — the dress that only came out for weddings, graduations, and funerals. "We are not going to lose this house,” she kept saying. “We are not going to lose this house.” She’d never worked outside the home. She was terrified. But she knew what she had to do. I watched her while she pulled it together, put that dress on, put on her high heels, blew her nose, walked to Sears, and got a minimum wage job. And that minimum wage job saved our house, but more importantly, it saved our family. This is a story that’s written on my heart. I’m remembering my mother’s courage this Mother’s Day — and I’m thinking about all the mamas out there fighting for their families. I’m also thinking about all the ways the deck is stacked against mothers and families like ours today. A mother in the same situation as our family today would not be able to work a minimum wage job and keep everyone afloat. Today, the federal minimum wage is $7.25 per hour — a wage that has not increased in about 15 years. With that, a family living on minimum wage today is living in poverty. And, without quality, affordable child care, mothers have been shoved out of the workforce. They will feel the consequences — in lost earnings, in lower Social Security benefits — for the rest of their lives. And, notably, most women who get abortions today are already mothers. Many are working multiple jobs that don’t pay enough to support their children. Abortion bans make it even harder for those families to make ends meet. I’m going to keep up the fight for higher wages, affordable child care, paid family leave, and reproductive freedom to honor my mother and mothers everywhere. And, look: I’m sure that social media right now is chock-full of Republican politicians waxing poetic about how much they love mothers. But I don’t want to see any tributes from them today unless they’re actually going to do something — anything — to improve the lives of mothers tomorrow. John Lewis was my inspiration

 

One of my greatest heroes is Congressman John Lewis. His willingness to bleed for our civil rights and tireless commitment to making our country a better place inspired me to become a voting rights lawyer. I was lucky enough to get to know Mr. Lewis when he joined me on the campaign trail in 2018. His kindness and optimism was heartening. Even during our country's darkest moments, he was filled with hope for our future. With hope that everyone should get the chance to chase their version of the American dream. To this day, Mr. Lewis' legacy inspires me to never stop fighting. That it's up to all of us to pick up the torch and keep working to ensure our country lives up to its founding ideals. Unfortunately, so many of the rights and ideals he fought for are being eroded and attacked every single day by people like Ted Cruz.
