Tim Walz is the real deal

 

I could not be more pleased and excited with Kamala Harris' selection of Tim Walz as her running mate. I worked with Tim after he was elected to Congress from a very conservative, rural district in southern Minnesota. He won his constituents over by being honest, direct, and fighting for progressive values that brought people together rather than divide them. His background as a football coach, high school history teacher, and over 20 years of service in the military was a winning formula for his district and it will be a winning formula as Vice President of the United States. As Governor, Tim guided a series of common-sense reforms, feeding kids at school, protecting healthcare, and creating a child tax credit for Minnesota families when congressional Republicans refused to extend it on the national level. Tim is the perfect compliment to Vice President Harris on the ticket and is a vivid contrast with a weird Republican VP nominee. J.D. Vance is a venture capitalist pretending to support everyday people. Walz will be embraced and supported and he will boost this winning Democratic ticket. I am excited for the American public to meet Governor Walz and make the comparison themselves. America will be all the better for Tim's candidacy. He is the vice president we need and I'm excited to get out there and work to elect Democrats up and down the ticket over the next 90 days. Juneteenth. Our work is far from done.

 

Today we celebrate Juneteenth, a federal holiday commemorating freedom for enslaved Black people in the United States. President Abraham Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation on January 1, 1863, but enslaved people in Galveston, Texas were not informed of their release from servitude until June 19, 1865. The day has become a celebrated anniversary marking freedom and independence for Black Americans. President Joe Biden signed a bill declaring Juneteenth a federal holiday in 2021 as the country was roiling in the fight for racial equity and justice demonstrating that our work is far from done. Our community in Portland, Oregon has been called out and called upon to scrutinize our collective history and reckon with racial justice. Black, Brown and Indigenous people continue to suffer disproportionately in justice, health care, economic and educational systems that were created and historically administered to exclude, not serve them. The pandemic has made all of this worse. I'm working to ensure that all I do in Congress is viewed through a racial and social justice lens. In my work, I am spotlighting some of the systemic racism that has been shamefully embedded in federal policies, and will continue working to undo it. I'm proud to be an original cosponsor of H.R. 40, the Commission to Study and Develop Reparation Proposals for African Americans Act. Restorative justice is also a reason why I spend so much time on cannabis reform. People of color have spent more than 50 years experiencing higher rates of incarceration, violence, and poverty because of the deplorable and failed War on Drugs. It is time for this era to end. Housing is another area where well documented accounts of "red lining" and discriminatory lending practices denied Black and Brown people the opportunity of homeownership. The failure to keep rental housing affordable is harming families and communities. I'm working with the Administration and housing champions in Congress and in Oregon to pass legislation that will start to reverse decades of disinvestment by the federal government, stabilize the housing crisis, and strengthen anti-discriminatory lending laws. The escalating impacts of climate disasters must also be dealt with from an equity and justice lens. There are wide-ranging, acute, and fatal public health consequences from climate change that disproportionately impact communities of color. Also vulnerable are the elderly, children, and people with chronic health concerns. My National Climate Emergency Act outlines steps the President can take to address the climate emergency while centering environmental justice. This month I am also introducing a climate resilience bill that modernizes the Federal Emergency Management Agency's definition of an underserved community and would allow post disaster aid to flow more easily to previously overlooked communities. Today, we remember that without equal justice for all, there can be no true freedom. As I reflect on Juneteenth, my commitment is to continue fighting to help all Americans, and Oregonians, live healthier, safer, and more secure lives. Moving Ahead for a Progressive Oregon

 

Thank you for electing me to be your Democratic nominee to Congress again! Your vote of confidence makes this all worthwhile. I promise that I will not let you down as our campaign leads the progressive charge heading into the fall. Congratulations as well to my fellow Democrats on winning their nominations. As we look ahead to the general election with control of the House and Senate hanging in the balance, my priorities are: Supporting working families: Inflation is hitting Americans hard. The housing crisis is taking a visible toll on our communities. I am leading the charge to build an economy that works for all. That includes reforming federal housing policies, expanding services to help people in crisis, and making the federal government a better partner to communities and organizations that are helping people in need. Safeguarding our democracy: Simply put, the Republican agenda is to limit voters' access to the polls. It is outrageous. Voters everywhere must come together to protect the right to vote and reject state laws that would restrict Americans' ability to exercise that right. Promoting climate resilience: The climate crisis is impacting all of us. Our homes, schools, businesses, and livelihoods must adapt and grow resilient to the threat of more frequent and severe weather events and disruptions. I am urging President Biden to declare a National Climate Emergency which would unleash the full power and resources of the federal government to deal with the climate crisis. It all comes down to this... The government has a responsibility to be an active force for good. That is the vision that keeps me running and working so hard to earn the right to represent you in Congress. While we have our work cut out for us, we can win when we stand together for the things that matter–not just to our lives today, but for the safety, health, and security of the generations that come. Our planet can't wait

This year we celebrated Earth Day with resolve and action. You and I know climate change is the most serious crisis affecting Americans today and it is well past time that the federal government began to treat it that way. This week, I conveyed the importance to President Biden and urged him to use his full powers to declare a national climate emergency. This would unlock vast federal resources to fight the effects of climate change, invest in a more resilient infrastructure, reduce pollution, and support public health. An emergency declaration would signal to Americans— and the rest of the world— that we are prioritizing the fight against climate change. More than 40 percent of Americans live in counties impacted by climate-fueled extreme weather events— and that number is expected to rise. Last summer, the Pacific Northwest experienced a heat dome unlike anything we have seen before. Portland saw its hottest recorded temperature ever when the city reached 107 degrees. That record broke when we reached 112 degrees the following day, and that record broke the next day at 116 degrees! Tri-Met suspended services, businesses closed, agricultural crops were destroyed, and our communities were unprepared— 500 deaths occurred, including 60 of our Portland neighbors. In response, I introduced the RESILIENCE Act which would significantly overhaul federal disaster relief programs, include extreme heat and freeze events, and make our communities more resilient to withstand future climate-induced emergencies before they occur. As a senior member of the Ways and Means Committee, I have worked non-stop to expand incentives for renewable energy development and remove favorable tax treatment for the fossil fuels industry. My End Oil and Gas Tax Subsidies Act eliminates the preferential treatment oil and gas companies enjoy in the federal tax code. I have also written several pieces of legislation to allow federal transportation dollars to be spent on bikeshare programs, to provide incentives for bike commuters, and help reduce the cost of electric vehicles and e-bikes. Climate change is not some abstract problem we can deal with later. Climate change is here, now. We must take bold steps to address this crisis. That is why I am leading the fight in Congress to help communities, and all Americans, prepare for a green and more resilient future.
