There was a recent 'outbreak' in New York & one of the problems is that it has a lengthy incubation period during which the virus may be spread. Each virus is unique and our scientific understanding has improved - not so RFK JR's comprehension. He's childlike in his propaganda which jeopardizes lives. At present, there are outbreaks of MEASLES & WHOOPING COUGH in the US which can be fatal.

Is This Trump’s Worst Idea Ever?

Is This Trump’s Worst Idea Ever?

We know, it’s a long list

Credit: Getty Images

In the down-is-up, grievance-fueled, gaslighting world that is Donald Trump, a new idea has been trotted out that is beyond bananas. His latest Hail Mary has the potential to risk the health of every citizen … and all for a few votes.

Trump wants Robert F. Kennedy Jr. to help him “straighten out our health” and “go wild on health” in his second term. Yes, the same RFK Jr. whose own family members have distanced themselves from him and endorsed the Democratic nominee.

Kennedy abandoned his flagging third-party presidential run in August, after reportedly offering his support to whichever candidate promised him the best job in their administration. Harris wouldn’t meet with him. Her opponent did, and soon after, Kennedy threw his support Trump’s way.

In the final days of what is expected to be a very close election, Trump must believe that tossing Kennedy a bone and trading on his famous name will help him. I doubt that it will, but more importantly, the prospect of Kennedy having anything to do with our nation’s health care is disturbing to say the least.

Kennedy told supports on a Zoom call yesterday that Trump has “promised” him “control of the public health agencies, which are HHS [Health and Human Services] and its sub-agencies, CDC [Centers for Disease Control], FDA [Food and Drug Administration], NIH [National Institutes of Health], and a few others,” like the Department of Agriculture. He would be “deeply involved in helping to choose the people” heading those agencies. That last part was likely added because Kennedy could have a hard time with Senate confirmation, should he get appointed to the Cabinet.

Let’s take a look at the would-be health czar of a second Trump administration. Kennedy is an unabashed anti-vaccine activist who started a nonprofit to campaign against things like child immunization and water fluoridation. He is a conspiracy theorist who promotes disproven ideas about the effects of pharmaceuticals. His dangerous beliefs include suspicions about inoculation for Covid, flu, chickenpox, mumps, and polio, among others. He is not only against them — he wants vaccines taken off the market so that no one has access to them.

Coupling an anti-vaccine zealot with Trump’s anti-science bent could be a deadly mix. Four years after a global pandemic killed 1.2 million Americans, Trump wants to install someone who will wreck the very agencies tasked with coordinating the country’s pandemic response, including vaccines that saved millions of lives.

Trump has also said he would “not give one penny to any school that has a vaccine mandate or a mask mandate.” Though he claims he is talking only about Covid vaccines, I choose to hedge my bets. Currently every state and Washington, D.C., requires that school children be immunized. Imagine an America where millions of children came to school without being vaccinated against whooping cough, tetanus, or measles. All can be deadly.

Having Kennedy run our country’s health care is like putting Hannibal Lecter in charge of the food supply.

Reaction to the news has come from all corners.

“Putting an anti-abortion conspiracy theorist in charge of our public health agencies says everything you need to know about how Donald Trump would govern,” Vice President Harris wrote on social media.

At a recent public health conference, Trump’s former surgeon general, Jerome Adams, said, “If RFK has a significant influence on the next administration, that could further erode people’s willingness to get up to date with recommended vaccines, and I am worried about the impact that could have on our nation’s health, on our nation’s economy, on our global security.”

Even Trump acknowledges that Kennedy has some crazy ideas. “We’re gonna let him go wild for a little while, then I’m gonna have to maybe rein him back, because he’s got some pretty wild ideas, but most of them are really good,” Trump said at the Al Smith dinner two weeks ago.

The Kennedy news comes on the heels of another round of promises by Republicans to get rid of the Affordable Care Act, also known as Obamacare. This week, Speaker of the House Mike Johnson responded to a voter who asked if there would be “no Obamacare?” Johnson agreed, “no Obamacare.” When asked to clarify his response, Johnson said he would pursue “massive reform.” Trump tried and failed several times to repeal the ACA. During his only debate with Harris, he said he had “concepts of a plan” for replacing it. All this for a program that has allowed 40 million Americans to get health insurance. The national uninsured rate is at its lowest levels ever, and 62% of the country has a favorable view of the ACA.

This assault on the American health care systems at the 11th hour of the campaign is curious but should not be ignored. The very health of our citizens and our democracy is at stake.

BREAKING: Supreme Court Upends Public Health and Safety Protections

I am sharing our official press statement below regarding a Supreme Court decision that deals a critical blow to nearly 40 years of science-based judicial policy.

It's a stark reminder of the urgency and importance of our work together. Today's decision demonstrates that policies that should be based on the best available scientific evidence are at risk of being dismantled by the whims and ideological preferences of unelected judges.

Yet, UCS members and supporters like you are the direct antidote to anti-science interests. Together, we will continue to champion evidence and facts, defending science from politicization, distortion, and disinformation.

Please check out our full press statement below and consider making an urgent Match gift to support science in action today.

Thank you,

P.S. To fight back against a rising tide of anti-science policies and court decisions with our unique brand of solution-oriented advocacy, UCS is aiming to raise $100,000 by June 30—and for a limited time, your gift will be worth DOUBLE as part of our $1-for-$1 Summer Match.

Supreme Court Upends Public Health and Safety Protections

Published June 28, 2024

Statement by Dr. Jennifer Jones, Union of Concerned Scientists

Today, the U.S. Supreme Court issued a decision that the federal courts can overrule the experts at federal agencies whose job is to implement public health and safety laws. Instead, federal courts would be the arbiters of regulatory questions, including those involving science. The ruling, which combined two cases, Loper Bright Enterprises v. Raimondo and Relentless, Inc. v. Department of Commerce, means that if Congress was not absolutely explicit when it crafted a law—which essentially would require Congress to possess the scientific and technical expertise of federal agency experts—it opens the door for corporate polluters and others who dislike the statute to get it overturned. This is an indefensible ruling that will make it harder to protect people and enforce laws against pollution and other public health threats, according to the Union of Concerned Scientists (UCS).

Below is a statement by Dr. Jennifer Jones, director of the Center for Science and Democracy at UCS.

“Nearly 40 years ago, the US Supreme Court ruled—confirming decades of practice—that experts at federal agencies have a role in interpreting the laws passed by Congress, and that the courts should defer to those experts’ reasonable interpretations. For decades, that principle has guided the way laws that protect public health, consumer rights, workers, and the environment are implemented. Today, the US Supreme Court has formally broken that precedent. The impact will be enormous. By paralyzing federal agencies and inviting lawsuits against the rules these agencies implement, this decision will profoundly undermine bedrock laws like the Clean Air Act that are meant to protect public health. Policies that should be based on the best available scientific evidence will be at risk of being dismantled by the whims and ideological preferences of unelected judges, and people will suffer as a result. The hubris of the majority in this case is hard to overstate. They’ve taken power from the elected branches of government and seized that power for themselves.

“The decisions in Loper Bright and Relentless are the result of well-funded campaigns by powerful industries and ideological interest groups that prioritize their profits reaped from polluting or harmful activities and fiercely oppose any effort to implement science-based public health protections. This is a reckless ruling, justified in abstract legal language, but the intent of these lawsuits—and the impacts of the ruling—is to make environmental, safety, and public health protections harder to implement and enforce, leaving millions of people breathing dirtier air, drinking dirtier water, and living and working in more dangerous conditions.

“In concert with the Supreme Court’s rulings in the Ohio v EPA and Corner Post cases, this Supreme Court term has strengthened the power of corporations to prevent environmental and public health laws from being meaningfully enforced.

“The damage that’s been done is significant and won't be easy to fix. Nevertheless, Congress has the responsibility to step into the breach to look for options to shore up protections for people and provide agency experts the appropriate authority they need to protect the public interest.”

The GOP’s anti-science agenda is costing lives

Millions of Texans have spent days without power in freezing temperatures. But, Texas GOP Governor Greg Abott had nothing better to do than jump on Fox News to blame renewable energy sources and claim that “the Green New Deal would be a deadly deal for the United States of America.”

But it's clear Greg Abbott, an avid climate change-denier, doesn't know what he's talking about.

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez fired back, saying, “The infrastructure failures in Texas are quite literally what happens when you *don't* pursue a Green New Deal.”

With a Democratic House, Joe Biden and Kamala Harris in the White House, and Kamala Harris as the tie breaking vote in the Senate, we can FINALLY pass the Green New Deal before it's too late to protect our planet from the worst impacts of climate change. We must act immediately, otherwise the effects of the warming planet will make life as we know it impossible for our children and grandchildren.

But Mitch McConnell calls the Green New Deal “nonsense,” and even with Democrats in control of the Senate, McConnell can filibuster the Green New Deal and prevent it from passing.

Kamala Harris has previously said she is “prepared to get rid of the filibuster to pass a Green New Deal.” It's past time we act on that promise.

We must act now. The climate crisis is already here. If we fail to take bold action on climate change, if we continue to appease climate change skeptics like Abbott to keep Republicans happy, then we won't have a country left to govern. So please, tell us where you stand now:

Should Dems end the filibuster to pass the Green New Deal?

We cannot do this work without you. Thank you so much for sharing your insights -- sharing your voice as an engaged American -- with us today.

Ashley Theresa: sharing Middleboro ignorance, poor science education and conspiracy theories

IT'S JUST A MASK. IT'S JUST A VACCINE
“In 4 months, the U.S. transformed into an obedient socialist country. Government dictated what events are acceptable to attend. Violent protests that instill fear are OK but church services, family funerals and patriotic celebrations are dangerous. And you bought it without a fight.
Standing in a graduation line is a "safety hazard". Small businesses were forced to close but crowds to support the corporate money machine at WalMart, Lowes and Home Depot are OK.
Come on. It's "just a mask" & "safety precautions".
How about a little hush money. Here's $2,400 that we stole out of your pay check in the first place. Enjoy. Buy something with it. From a big corporation.
Cash is dirty. We can't give change. There's a coin shortage. Use your card. In 4 months, they convinced you to use a traceable card for everything.
In less than 4 months, government closed public schools then "restructured" education under the guise of "public safety". In less than 4 months, our government demonstrated how easily people assimilate to "guidelines" that have NO scientific premise whatsoever when you are fearful.
In less than 4 months, our government successfully instilled fear in a majority of the population in America that allows them to control every aspect of your life. Including what you eat, where you go, who you see and your toilet paper.
And the most dangerous and terrifying part? People are not afraid of the government who removed their freedom. They're afraid of their neighbors, family and friends.
And they hate those who won't comply.
It's absolutely terrifying to me that so many people don't question "authority". They are willing to surrender their critical thinking skills and independence. They just... gave up without thinking. Without a fight.
Do you know what's coming next?
"It's just a vaccine. Come on. It's for the greater good".
Wait until you're told that you can't enter any store or business without proof of the Covid-19 vaccine. Wait until you can't go to public events or get on a plane without proof of receiving the vaccine.
To everyone that doesn't believe this is possible - DO YOU UNDERSTAND that government successfully dictated to people WHEN they were allowed to be outside, where they were allowed to go, and how their children would be educated in less than 4 months? And that a majority of the population followed blindly because they were told to do so.
You're kidding yourself if you think this behavior won't be repeated with a vaccine. Or whatever the next step is.
"I don't follow politics."
"Who cares about that stuff?" "I don't like to think about it."
They got you. Without a thought. Without a fight. Just like France. Just like Russia. Just like China. Welcome, comrade.”
The mark of the beast is coming!

WOW! What I see is an emotional rant that excludes FACTS, SCIENCE and the information from other nations that have significantly reduced or eliminated COVID-19 and you have included a huge dose of conspiracy theory.

What we now know is that 40% of people with the virus are asymptomatic.

A friend has been working with an assistant for the past few months, practiced social distancing, wore FACE MASKS. She fell and broke her hip and when the hospital tested her, she was COVID-19 POSITIVE ASYMPTOMATIC. Her boss tested NEGATIVE, but is self-quarantining for 14 days.

We also now understand that ANTIBODIES may not last long. There may be no 'herd immunity.'
That impacts the efficacy of a vaccine.

There are several easily digestible articles about vaccines, testing and immunity if you care to inform yourself that I will gladly post.

If you were paying attention, you might have noticed that New Zealand and Germany, both with women leaders who have impressive education, closed down their economies to STOP THE SPREAD and were successful.

ITALY on the other hand, never really shut down, allowed public transportation to continue, as well as tourism and parties. They had hearses lined up to collect dead bodies.
Did you see?

And students who were in ITALY returned and immediately resumed classes with no quarantine, spreading the virus. Did that make sense?

The method of transmission is not a mystery. That's why FACE MASKS are part of the solution.

MISSOURI had an outdoor graduation and an off site prom afterwards and depending on the report, experiences 19-22 cases of the virus. Was it worth it if they don't survive?

Initially, it was believed that children don't get the virus. That has been proven to be untrue. And the complications of younger patients are unique.

As for shopping - I have shopped at smaller stores and done curbside pickup. They were always available and we supported them.

Sometimes, you need to seek credible sources for information.

EPIDEMIOLOGY, the complex science, tracking the sources can be overwhelming, but that's no excuse to embrace inflammatory foolishness.
