Soldiers Are Dying. Farmers Are Going Under. The Speaker Canceled The Rest Of The Year.
Mike Johnson canceled the rest of the session and sent the House home until mid-November. The farm bill dies in nine days. A farmer named Conrad Cable is running to take his seat.

Mike Johnson runs the United States House of Representatives. Two weeks ago he canceled the rest of the session and sent everyone home until the middle of November. Ten weeks. The farm bill expires in nine days.
He Locked The Door And Left
Farmers have been waiting three years for a farm bill. Energy costs are up. Tariffs gutted their prices. The law that holds the whole system together runs out September 30, and the House will not be in the building when it happens.
Johnson’s reason: his members wanted to go campaign. That is the actual reason. He shut down the lawmaking branch of the United States government for ten weeks so Republicans could knock on doors and ask for their jobs back.
Nobody Is Coming To Help
More than four million people have already lost their food assistance. Health insurance premiums are about to jump for millions of families because Congress let the help expire and never replaced it. American soldiers are still dying in a war Congress never voted on.
A reporter asked Johnson about that war this month. He said he has “nothing to do with the prosecution of the war,” and called it one of the “stupidest questions” he gets. Men are coming home in boxes and the Speaker of the House says the war is not his department.

He Is Bragging About It
Four days ago he posted a list of everything this Congress has delivered. It got slapped with a correction on his own post: this is the least productive Congress in American history. 112 laws. He passed a resolution congratulating a hockey team.
He is third in line to the presidency. He decides what the House votes on and what it never gets to vote on. He picked nothing.
A Farmer Is Running Against Him
Conrad Cable is a first-generation farmer. He grew up picking tomatoes and squash before seven in the morning and driving them door to door to elderly neighbors who couldn’t get to the store. He is running for the farm bill Johnson won’t come back for, and against the food cuts that took meals from four million people.

He takes no corporate money. Johnson takes it by the truckload.
