A thank you, and a look to the future

Last night when ballot tallies became clear, I called Kevin Barton to congratulate him and to wish him success in office. On September 13 of last year, I officially entered the race for District Attorney. I made that leap because Washington County deserves a criminal justice system that reflects the community's values. We ended the campaign for office last night, but no one on Team Decker is halting the pursuit of justice. This campaign was never about me. It was about the issues. You and all my supporters signed on to restore balance to Washington County. Thank you. Despite the ballot counts, I am even surer today than I was in September that this community has the compassion, the decency, and the determination to remake our justice system. The incumbent has held onto the office, but more than 33,000 voters sent the message that the status quo is not OK. This race was far narrower than the one four years ago, and the establishment ought to take note. Volunteers knocked on doors, advocates drafted op-eds, and neighbors wrote postcards to undecided voters. They did it all because they demand a fairer, better future. We still can achieve that more just future, and I will be beside you in that effort. The support I have earned from so many corners has been staggering, and I am encouraged to move ahead with purpose. I know that we reflect the values of Washington County, and together we will build true justice and real safety in this community.

We are sad to report back that Brian Bush lost his race for City Court Judge in Chattanooga.

We were up against so much, including a powerful incumbent. While this is a hard loss, we don’t regret any of our work and commitment to support an incredible justice champion like Brian.

There’s no question about it: this was an uphill challenge. But it’s these kinds of races – with changemakers fighting on the local level – that are going to create the real justice we are working towards across the nation.

Brian lost by 2,218 votes. Many of the local races we are fighting in come down to fewer votes – which make the difference between a win and a loss.

This race result stings – but today we continue fighting for our endorsed candidates who have races in less than a week. We are ready to work even harder to see some wins on May 17th for communities in North Carolina and Oregon.

We can’t let this loss slow us down. Can we count on you to pitch in and elect Satana Deberry, Damon Chetson, Tim Emry, and Brian Decker – before May 17? Every dollar on this email goes directly to their final voter turnout efforts and goes a LONG way.

Losses like these are part of our reality. We punch WAY above our weight class, but sometimes special interests with giant war chests funding our opponents pull out ahead.

But it’s what we do now that defines our fight. Let’s rub the dirt off, push up our sleeves, reflect on our losses, and get back to work.

Brian Decker vs. this anti-choice DA

 

Brian Decker has vowed to NEVER prosecute abortion cases – but right now his race is neck-and-neck to be the next District Attorney for Washington County in Oregon. We need ALL hands on deck!!!

Listen. Brian’s opponent, DA Kevin Barton, has done the opposite. In fact, one month ago, DA Barton said, “What in the world does pro-choice have to do with the work of a DA? Absolutely nothing."

🤬 Excuse my language, but that’s bullshit, Tony. DAs have the power to decide whether to prosecute people seeking abortion or medical professionals who perform them if abortion becomes illegal. Washington County deserves SO much better. That is why I am BEGGING you:

PLEASE help defeat this dangerous, anti-choice DA and replace him with Brian Decker – by splitting a donation to Brian and Real Justice here. Brian will be a DA we can count on to fight for reproductive justice, and we need more like him.

Black, brown, and low-income people will be hit the hardest if the Supreme Court decides to overturn Roe v. Wade. These communities are already criminalized at higher rates – stripping rights, locking people up, and stopping people from making decisions about their own bodies and LIVES.

It’s disgusting.

It’s horrific.

What the Supreme Court is doing right now is beyond appalling.

But we can fight back by electing DAs who will stand up for abortion rights and fight for reproductive justice.

In fact, if Roe v. Wade IS overturned, DAs like Brian will be our FIRST line of defense to make sure that people are not prosecuted for abortion. But we NEED to help him win.

Hey, I just got out of back-to-back livestream conversations with our founder Shaun King and two of our amazing candidates for DA this year.

I have to say, these conversations filled me with renewed hope for what’s possible if all of us get involved to help them win.

First up, we spoke with Brian Decker, who is running to be the next District Attorney in Washington County, Oregon. Watch and share the video now.

Brian has experience on both sides of a courtroom – first as a federal prosecutor and then as a public defender. He understands that true public safety doesn’t mean solely relying on police to address community needs. He wants to make sure those trained in mental health, addiction recovery, and social work are a part of the public safety response in Washington County.

Then, we had the chance to hear from the brilliant Allison Miller, who is running to be the next State Attorney for Pinellas and Pasco Counties in Florida. Watch and share our conversation.

Allison has been a public defender for years, representing people who cannot afford the outrageous costs of high-priced legal defense. She’s also been a tireless advocate for victims’ rights and is on the board of a nonprofit that supports people who are facing the death penalty and cannot afford representation.

This is the first time this election has been contested since 1964. If she wins, she will be the first woman and the first public defender to hold this seat, which is especially crucial in Florida right now.

We’re so proud to be fighting to elect people like Brian and Allison every single day.
