The Senate confirmation hearing for Pete Hegseth, Donald Trump's pick to be defense secretary, was repeatedly disrupted Tuesday by protesters who denounced the nominee's history of hateful remarks against women, LGBTQ people and others, as well as to demand an end to U.S. support for Israel's genocide in Gaza. We speak with two of those protesters, military veterans Josephine Guilbeau and Greg Stoker, who say they were motivated to speak out against the "war machine" that hurts people who serve in the military as well as people around the world who are victims of U.S. militarism. "They use us as pawns to go to these wars and ultimately go kill innocent people," says Guilbeau. In France, sentences have been handed down in the trial of Dominique Pelicot and 51 other men convicted of rape against Pelicot’s ex-wife, Gisèle. Dominique Pelicot had repeatedly and systematically drugged and facilitated the rape of Gisèle Pelicot, approaching other men online to visit their home and assault her over a period of 10 years. Pelicot waived anonymity and fought for a public trial in the historic case, a decision that shaped the public discourse on sexual violence and the prevalence of chemical submission and drug-assisted sexual assault. “We were all here to wait for Gisèle, but also we were all here for one another,” says Diane de Vignemont, a French journalist who reported on the Pelicot trial and found a “sisterhood” that formed among women attendees to the trial, many of whom shared their own experiences with sexual assault. President Joe Biden’s decision to grant clemency to a corrupt former judge has sparked widespread outrage, including from members of his own party. Biden announced nearly 1,500 commutations and pardons last week in what the White House described as the largest single-day act of clemency from a president, but among those whose sentences were reduced is former Pennsylvania Judge Michael Conahan — one of two judges in the notorious “kids for cash” scandal. In 2011, Conahan was sentenced to 17.5 years for accepting nearly $3 million in kickbacks for sending 2,300 children, some as young as 8 years old, to for-profit prisons on false charges. His co-conspirator, former Judge Mark Ciavarella, remains in prison. We speak with filmmaker Robert May, director of the Kids for Cash documentary, and Sandy Fonzo, mother of Edward Kenzakoski, who was incarcerated as a teenager as part of the kickback scheme and later died by suicide. “It’s just reopening wounds that have never healed,” Fonzo says of the commutation. "This Carnage Needs to Stop": Israel Bans Aid Groups from Gaza, Kills Over 1,000 in North Gaza Siege

Israeli human rights group B’Tselem reported “Since 1967 , Thousands of homes of Palestinians were demolished by Israel. This is part of war crime: The Fourth Geneva Convention prohibits the occupying state from destroying the property of civilians in occupied territory, ” Homes were usually demolished at night without residents being given any advance warning. The homes destroyed by security forces belonged to Palestinians who were not suspected of any involvement in causing harm to Israeli civilians or security forces. They were given no opportunity to plead their case before any instance and received no compensation for the damage they sustained. This policy of collective punishment inflicted lasting harm on thousands of people. 

This policy constitutes collective punishment, which is prohibited and violates binding provisions of international law. 

I wept just a few minutes into watching this. Thank you Amy, for giving us a window into what's happening in Gaza. Thank you for your coverage, thank you for your humanity. God bless you. Evil thrives when good men and women keep quiet. We will continue to speak out against this madness. We will not give up.

Israel has taken over some of these areas using official means: issuing military orders, declaring the area “state land,” a “firing zone” or a “nature reserve,”. Other areas have been effectively taken over by settlers through daily acts of violence, including attacks on Palestinians and their property. Settler violence against Palestinians is part of the strategy employed by Israel’s apartheid regime, which seeks to take over more and more West Bank land. The state fully supports and assists these acts of violence,

Northern Gaza, which is one-fourth of Gaza’s territory, has been under siege for 23 days. The nearly 400,000 residents who had remained there after a year of war face inhumane conditions as food, water, and medicines have run out, and aid is not reaching them More than 800 people have been killed in three weeks.🇵🇸️🇵🇸️

Literally.”The Washington Post “The Netanyahus are the only ones who bring actual suitcases of dirty laundry for us to clean,” said one U.S. official, who like others spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss the details of a foreign leader’s visits. “After multiple trips, it became clear this was intentional.” Over the years, the Israeli leader has developed a reputation among the staff at the U.S. president’s guesthouse for bringing special cargo on his trips to Washington: bags and suitcases full of dirty laundry, according to U.S. officials familiar with the matter. The clothes are cleaned for the prime minister free of charge by the U.S. staff, a perk that is available to all foreign leaders but sparingly taken advantage of given the short stays of busy heads of state.

On Saturday, Israeli forces withdrew from Kamal Adwan Hospital just one day after storming it, with health officials saying that soldiers detained dozens of male medical staffers and some of the patients. This comes as the Israeli government has banned six medical NGOs from entering Gaza despite the dire humanitarian crisis stemming from repeated displacements of the population, widespread disease, injuries from Israeli attacks, hunger and more. Some 43,000 Palestinians have been killed since Israel launched its war on Gaza last October, according to local officials, although the true toll is likely far higher. "The healthcare infrastructure is destroyed. Many of the local doctors have been either killed or kidnapped. The patients are left stranded; no one is providing any help to them," says Mosab Nasser, CEO of FAJR Scientific, one of the six medical aid groups banned by Israel.
