Rural Teacher Pedro Castillo Poised to Write a New Chapter in Peru’s History
Written by Medea Benjamin and Leonardo Flores

Castillo’s victory will be remarkable not only because he is a leftist teacher who is the son of illiterate peasants and his campaign was grossly outspent by Fujimori, but there was a relentless propaganda attack against him that touched on historical fears of Peru’s middle class and elites.

Atmospheric Carbon Dioxide Hits Highest Level in Over 4 Million Years
by Brett Wilkins

Scientists from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and Scripps Institute of Oceanography at the University of California, San Diego working at NOAA’s Mauna Loa Atmospheric Baseline Observatory in Hawaii said the May measurements—an
increase from 417 parts per million (ppm) in May 2020—mean that “the atmospheric burden of CO2 is now comparable to where it was during the Pliocene Climatic Optimum, between 4.1 and 4.5 million years ago, when CO2 was close to, or above 400 ppm.”

International Energy Agency report underscores inadequacy of US government response to climate change
by Ronan Coddington

The report, which is titled Net Zero by 2050, states that in order to achieve a carbon neutral world by that year producers will need to immediately stop any new fossil fuel production. This is only one of 400 “milestones” along the road to 2050, and its implausibility only underscores the difficulties of combining a rational, science-based response to the danger of climate change with the maintenance of global capitalism, driven by private profits and the interests of
rival nation-states.

126 Nobel Laureates and Experts Issue Timely Warning on Some Crucial Issues, But  Miss Other Urgent Concerns
by Bharat Dogra

While this statement makes several very important observations, it is really surprising and regrettable to find that it makes some omissions of very critical importance and  some issues of critical importance for resolving the present crisis  are more or less left out of this statement’s concerns. Hence while this statement deserves great attention for its several important and profound observations, it deserves attention also for the glaring omissions that have been made. For example the most important task of complete elimination of nuclear weapons ( and in fact all weapons of mass destruction) is hardly mentioned in this statement.

Educating for the future we want
by Stephen Sterling

We are approaching fifty years since the UN Conference on the Environment in Stockholm endorsed the key role of education, nearly thirty years since Agenda 21 proposed that education is “critical for achieving environmental and ethical awareness,” and five years since the SDGs set a target date of 2030. The ambitious UNESCO “Futures of Education” initiative promises a chance to reset direction and priorities. But to date, strong cultural inertia and the counterforce of neoliberalism have slowed progress, and the time is long overdue for holding Westernized education policy and practice to account. Now, efforts to transform education are greater than ever, but so, too, are the stakes and urgency. We need to move fast and with bold aspiration, while retaining critical reflexivity, as we create a new chapter in the evolution of our ways of educating on this—as yet—still beautiful planet.

Young farmers
in Ladakh: the future of our food
Written by Kunzang Deachen, Chozin Palmo and Jigmet Singge

Westernisation has come with a lot of glamour and promises of affluence, but today, many younger people are beginning to realise that the chase for modernity and glamour brings little more than dissatisfaction, disconnection, and feelings of addiction.

A People’s Vaccine Against a Mutating Virus and Neoliberal Rule
by Nicolas J S Davies

Ending international vaccine apartheid is not just a matter of altruism, or even justice. It is a question of whether we will end this pandemic before vaccine-resistant, super-spreading and deadlier variants fuel even more toxic new waves. The only way humanity can win this struggle is to act collectively in our common interest.

Universal Health Coverage and Unmet
Reproductive Health needs of Migrant Women at times of Pandemic COVID-19 in India
by Ujjwala Gupta

The spread of COVID in rural areas created a state of emergency due to ill-equipped infrastructure in Public Health system to handle spike in cases. This directed the Government to shift its priority deeming SRH activities as non-emergency, to respond to the needs of pandemic , consequently sidelining the reproductive health needs. Above that, seasonal migration disrupts the access to health care services in actual place of origin and also simultaneously creating missing and duplicity in public health records of antenatal, family planning and vaccination.

To avoid catastrophes India should adopt a risk minimization for all policy
by Sagar Dhara

COVID-19 is a gray rhino event, an event that is highly probable and with a large impact. It can be seen well in advance due to its size and early warning signs, but which are ignored. Now over a year into the pandemic, India remains completely unprepared for COVID-19’s second wave.

Downward Social Mobility and Authoritarianism
by Jon Kofas

In the next economic downturn, the US already has a political party with the ideological and political makings of a native-style Fascist Party. Given the expanding local and state-base of the populist right wing, it will be very easy for any number of Republicans to rise to power as Fascist in ideology and policies, while claiming to represent democracy.

Twilight of the Pandemic? Bracing for a Surge of Trumpism or…
by John Feffer

Sure, I continue to worry about what the next wave of Covid-19 might look like. I fear both the continued lunacy of the Republican Party and the pallid incrementalism of the Democrats. But I’m heartened by the energy of people all over the world determined to beat back dystopia, take control of their lives, and transform the optimists’ credo of “hope and change”
into something a great deal more significant than a campaign slogan.

At His Best, Dilip Vengsarkar Could Sit In The Company of The All-Time Greats
by Harsh Thakor

Without doubt Dilip Vengsarkar is one of the finest batsmen ever to have graced a cricket field. This week we commemorate the feat of Dilip Vengsarkar becoming the 1st overseas batsman ever to score three consecutive centuries in test matches at Lords. It is a landmark that would inscribe a permanent place in the museum of cricket. We also coincidentally celebrate the 35th anniversary of India’s first win at Lords, the mecca of cricket.

Federal judge uses anti-vax falsehoods to justify AR-15s on California streets

A federal judge just overturned California’s assault weapons ban.

He likened the AR-15 to a “Swiss Army Knife.”

And then spread an anti-vax falsehood that “more people have died from the Covid-19 vaccine than mass shootings in California.”

This is a direct result of Republican presidents packing the lower courts with ideologues, and congressional inaction on gun violence prevention laws.

We need to take a stand against these dangerous ideas and false claims. The Senate must take action to reinstate the federal assault weapons ban. Add your name if you agree.

ADD YOUR NAME

After President Biden’s Rose Garden press conference rallying support for my Equal Access to Justice for Victims of Gun Violence Act in April, I wrote to you that we had already lost over 11,000 people to gun violence this year, seen another 8,000 injured, and witnessed 133 mass shootings.

In just two months, those numbers have virtually doubled. Over 19,000 gun violence deaths. Over 16,000 injured. And 258 mass shootings. Enough.

The AR-15 and weapons like it are not akin to a Swiss Army Knife — it’s a weapon of war. And treating it any other way is an insult to those who have suffered because of this weapon.

The NRA and its Republican allies have fought for decades to stop even the most common-sense reforms, but the bottom line is this: We are the only developed nation in the world that tolerates this kind of bloodshed. It doesn’t have to be this way.

Add your name to join me in demanding the Senate reinstate the federal assault weapons ban. We can’t let NRA talking points or anti-vax misinformation stop us from protecting our communities.

ADD YOUR NAME

Gun violence victims and their families need justice. We must do all we can to enact common-sense gun laws so no more lives are lost to this scourge.

The barbaric slaughter of street dogs in Jordan must be stopped

What we are about to share with you is SO sickening and brutal. But we must tell you about this because every day the most dreadful cruelty to dogs is routinely dished out - often it seems for the sheer “pleasure” of torturing animals.

We need to stand together NOW for the dogs of Jordan!

Time and again, government officials with the Municipality in Jordan have promised to clamp down on the shocking casual cruelty inflicted on street dogs. It seems these promises mean absolutely nothing. The video makes this crystal clear. By turning a blind eye to what is happening and not enforcing humane policies, the authorities are effectively SANCTIONING MURDER.

The shocking video recently began circulating on social media. It graphically shows the sickening killing of an innocent street dog. Actually, “sickening” is an understatement - the right words don’t exist...

This level of cruelty is beyond belief, but it’s happening in Jordan.

In the video, a friendly dog is barbarically shot by an employee of the Zarqa municipality in the Gibraltar region of Jordan. Children use food to lure the dog to where the killers wait. The dog wags his tail as he unsuspiciously approaches the gunman.

The gunman then coldheartedly opens fire on the innocent dog, not killing him but severely injuring him. The dog tries to run away, yelping in pain but the sadist fires again and again and again, until finally the poor tortured creature collapses and dies.

The sad truth in Jordan is that dogs are routinely and purposely run over by carsshot, and poisoned. Hundreds are left to suffer and die.

If we can raise enough funds, we will begin by rescuing more dogs, as many as we can, and get them to a place of safety. The second step will be to work with our partners on the ground to pressurize authorities to initiate mass spay and neuter programs so we can prevent dogs from being born into this life of hell. Third, we will double our efforts to raise awareness because THE WORLD NEEDS TO KNOW.

Imagine yourself as a street dog in Jordan…

Life is unimaginably tough. For dogs, the streets are like a warzone. You are always hungry and have to scrounge for food, wherever you can. You want to trust humans (that’s just your nature) but food is routinely laced with poison - it will cause you prolonged suffering before you finally die. If you are lucky enough to escape being poisoned, it's highly likely you will either be mowed down by a speeding maniac or shot by a merciless gunman. That's it - that's your life...

It is impossible to fathom why street dogs in Jordan are treated so badly!

We work around the world, and the level of cruelty in Jordan is among the worse we have ever seen. Some of these practices are dressed up as population control, such as feeding street dogs poison-laced food. But some of it seems to be motivated by pure hatred of dogs. For fun, groups of men search for street dogs and kill as many as they can with high-powered rifles, while others deliberately mow down dogs in their vehicles.

Our team has met with authorities and tried to negotiate peace for the dogs. We have offered solutions such as mass spay and neuter programs. They promised to stop the killing, but the mass poisoning and shooting of dogs continues unabated.

We urgently need your help again - so, please donate what you can today. Whatever you send enables us to continue this lifesaving work.

The time for serious action is NOW!
Your donation will go a long way towards saving lives and implementing real change.

Working with our partners on the ground, the Al Rabi Shelter and Al Rahmeh Sanctuary, we already help feed, medically treat and provide shelter for hundreds of dogs in private shelters where they are safe.

However, when it comes to changing and enforcing policies that will protect street dogs from callous slaughter, it is increasingly evident that we and our partners are on our own.

WE WON’T GIVE UP!

And with the support of animal lovers like you, we will continue our lifesaving work and END CRUELTY TO STREET DOGS IN JORDAN!

Antonio, if we can raise enough funds, we will begin by rescuing more dogs, as many as we can, and get them to a place of safety. The second step will be to work with our partners on the ground to pressurize authorities to initiate mass spay and neuter programs so we can prevent dogs from being born into this life of hell. Third, we will double our efforts to raise awareness because THE WORLD NEEDS TO KNOW.

Please, help if you can today!

Now Would Be a Great Time to Save RSN

We’ve taken quite a beating on funding over the past several months. Clearly it’s taking its toll. RSN is here and strong, but it is and has always been dependent on a basic operating budget. That’s fallen off sharply in recent months.

The situation is bad.

FOCUS: Robert Reich | American Democracy Is Fighting for Its Life - and Republicans Don't Care
Former Clinton labor secretary Robert Reich. (photo: Steve Russell/Toronto Star)
Robert Reich, Guardian UK
Reich writes: "On Sunday, the West Virginia senator Joe Manchin announced in an op-ed in the Charleston Gazette-Mail that he opposes the For the People Act. He also opposes ending the filibuster."

If Joe Manchin won’t vote yes on the For the People Act, Biden needs to convince one Republican senator – and that’s not going to happen

An op-ed in the most prominent state newspaper is about as non-negotiable a position a senator can assert.

It was a direct thumb-in-your-eye response to President Biden’s thinly veiled criticism of Manchin last Tuesday in Tulsa, where Biden explained why he was having difficulty getting passage of what was supposed to be his highest priority – new voting rights legislation that would supersede a raft of new voter suppression laws in Republican-dominated states, using Trump’s baseless claim of voter fraud as pretext.

“I hear all the folks on TV saying, ‘Why doesn’t Biden get this done?’” Biden asked rhetorically in Tulsa. “Well, because Biden only has a majority of effectively four votes in the House, and a tie in the Senate, with two members of the Senate who vote more with my Republican friends. But we’re not giving up.”

Everyone knew he was referring to Manchin, as well as Arizona Senator Kyrsten Sinema, another Democratic holdout.

Manchin’s very public repudiation of Biden on Sunday could mean the end of the For the People Act. That opens the way for Republican states to continue their shameless campaign of voter suppression – very possibly giving Republicans a victory in the 2022 midterm elections and entrenching Republican rule for a generation.

As it is, registered Republicans make up only about 25% of the American electorate, and that percentage appears to be shrinking in the wake of Trump’s malodorous exit.

But because rural Republican states like Wyoming (with 574,000 inhabitants) get two senators just as do urban ones like California (with nearly 40 million), and because Republican states have gerrymandered districts that elect House members to give them an estimated 19 extra seats over what they would have without gerrymandering, the scales were already tipped.

Then came the post-Trump deluge of state laws making it harder for likely Democrats to vote, and easier for Republican state legislatures to manipulate voting tallies.

Manchin says he supports extending the John Lewis Voting Rights Act to all 50 states. That’s small comfort.

The original 1965 Voting Rights Act was struck down by the supreme court in 2013, on the dubious logic that it was no longer needed because states with a history of suppressing Black votes no longer did so. (Note that within 24 hours of the ruling, Texas announced it would implement a strict photo ID law, and Mississippi and Alabama soon followed.)

The efficacy of a new national Voting Rights Act would depend on an activist justice department willing to block state changes in voting laws that suppress votes and on an activist supreme court willing to uphold such justice department decisions. Don’t bet on either. We know what happened to the justice department under Trump, and we know what’s happened to the supreme court.

Besides, a new Voting Rights Act wouldn’t be able to roll back the most recent round of voter suppression laws from Republican states.

Without Manchin, then, the For the People Act is probably dead, unless Biden can convince one Republican senator to join Senate Democrats in supporting it – like, say, Utah’s Mitt Romney, who has publicly rebuked Trump for lying about the 2020 election and has something of a reputation for being an institutionalist who cares about American democracy.

Yet given Trump’s continuing hold over the shrinking Republican party, any Republican senator who joined with the Democrats in supporting the For the People Act would probably be ending their political career. Profiles in courage make good copy for political obituaries and memorials.

I’m afraid history will show that, in this shameful era, Republican senators were more united in their opposition to voting rights than Democratic senators were in their support for them.

The future of American democracy needs better odds.
