It’s World Ocean Day 🌊🌊🌊

The ocean is a vast carbon dioxide sink, absorbing 90 percent of the world's excess heat and one-third of the nation's carbon. A healthy ocean is absolutely essential in the fight against climate change.

The ocean has been taking the brunt of fossil fuel pollution and chemical contamination. The waters are warming at an alarming rate. Acidification, harmful algae blooms and ocean dead zones are threatening and killing entire ecosystems beneath the waves.

If we do nothing to protect our ocean, we're toast.

Congress must step up and take bold action to protect our ocean for the future of humanity and the planet. There is one bill in Congress that we are especially excited to support: The Ocean-Based Climate Solutions Act introduced by Rep. Grijalva.

Tell Congress: Step up the fight against the climate crisis – protect our ocean!

ADD YOUR NAME!

Here are just a handful of things the Ocean-Based Climate Solutions Act will do:

  • Protect and restore 'blue carbon' ecosystems

  • Restore and revitalize wetlands

  • Promote climate and coastland resiliency

  • Prohibit oil & gas leasing on the Outer Continental Shelf

  • Boost research into the acidification of our ocean and harmful algae blooms

  • Promote clean, offshore wind energy

  • Put us on a path to protect 30% of the world's ocean by 2030

The bill will also ensure that communities that often bear the brunt of climate change—communities of color, Tribal and Indigenous communities and low-income communities, will be given equitable climate and coastal solutions for their communities.

It's long past time for Congress to take meaningful action in the fight against climate change. The longer we wait, the worse the crisis will get. On this World Ocean Day, add your name to tell Congress to take bold action to protect our ocean –now!
