Today’s Action: Yes, you can do something about Joe Manchin...
You’ve probably heard about Sen. Joe Manchin’s (D-WV) recent op-ed, in which he doubles down on refusing to join every other member of the Democratic caucus in supporting the For The People Act, a sweeping upgrade of voting rights, accessibility, and transparency, and in spite of the fact that the bill is supported by 79% of West Virginia voters. Manchin also reiterates that he will not support any changes to the filibuster, which must be eliminated or reduced in power to pass essentially the entire Democratic agenda. Go ahead - get angry for a moment.
But here’s the thing: in the op-ed, Manchin reiterates his support of the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act, which will also require the elimination of the filibuster to pass. We badly need this bill passed to restore the anti-racist voting rights protections established in 1965, and gutted by a right-leaning Supreme Court in 2013. But with one single Republican in favor, and given Mitch McConnell’s refusal to allow a vote on the bill in 2019, this is a lost cause while the filibuster remains in place – and Manchin knows this.
So Manchin wants to play chess? Fine, we’ll play chess too. But we won’t be his pawns.
This month, Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer plans to put everything on the table, forcing Senate votes on many of the pieces of legislation that Manchin and other filibuster-reform-squeamish Democrats want to see passed even as they cling to false narratives of potential bipartisanship.
And it’s our job to back Schumer’s power move and clamor like hell for these policies, to make it politically impossible for Democrats to allow their failure – thereby forcing Manchin and other moderate Democrats to change their minds about eliminating the filibuster to pass them.
No more business as usual, folks. It’s time to demand much more of moderate Democrats who have sat too long in the unchanging comfort of mediocrity. Make the call for voting rights today.
Call or email your Senators and demand the passage of the For The People Act AND the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act to restore democratic voting to the people and end widespread and racist GOP voter suppression. Tell them failure is NOT an option.
