One thing Trump left out on TV: he said people who report fraud would get 1%, and he’d decide who gets paid. His own Justice Department’s rules say the most you can get is $30,000, it’s up to the department, and you can’t appeal. Trump’s name isn’t in them at all. If someone you love should see this before they vote, a gift subscription gets it to them today. Founding Members join my private strategy call the Monday after the election.

Trump Fired The Watchdogs. What He Did Next Gets His Congress Fired In 10 Days.

A White House phone call, a fraudster on a plane to prison, and a tip line that leads to empty desks

Happy Saturday, thanks for joining me. Grab a coffee, or whatever you’re drinking, and settle in. With 10 days left until the election, I’ve got a lot to show you.

On Tuesday, Trump sat in the Oval Office and asked all of us to start reporting fraud using his new hotline. This is a man who, among many other things, paid $25 million to settle fraud claims over Trump University. Funny he brought it up. Democrats already have the receipts ready for the day they get subpoena power.

Before we jump in, hit the ❤️ like button and then restack this edition—the button with two arrows next to the heart. Trump wants the whole country talking about his tip line this weekend. Let’s talk about his record instead.

When we say we’re completely independent, we mean there is no advertiser or rich owner we have to answer to, ever, because we’re 100% powered by this amazing community. That’s why I can spend these last 10 days releasing our investigations into GOP Senate campaigns. If you’ve been on the fence, I’d love to have you with me as we sprint through the finish—and beyond. Join us.

Trump’s Record Is Already In The

 Court Files

Trump said the government would start paying people 1% of the fraud they report. And he made it clear he’d be the one deciding: “I will be the arbitrator of all of these decisions … You’ll get your money immediately, but I’ll make the determination.”

Before Trump judges anyone else’s fraud, his own record should count. So I went back and pulled some of his most notorious cases.

In 2010, bankruptcy lawyer Sherri Simpson attended a Trump University seminar in South Florida. She remembers Trump telling viewers in videos, “Oh, you’re going to get the best of the best.”

“I realized: ‘This is a joke.’ There’s nothing there,” she said. In November 2016, right after he won the election, Trump agreed to pay $25 million to settle the Trump University lawsuits.

In February 2024, Judge Arthur Engoron found that Trump, his two oldest sons, and his business had inflated the value of Trump’s buildings for years to get better loans from banks. Engoron wrote: “Their complete lack of contrition and remorse borders on pathological.”

In August 2025, an appeals court threw out the penalty, which had grown past $500 million with interest. But the fraud finding stayed. Trump asked New York’s highest court to throw that out too.

This is just scratching the surface of the cases against Trump. But in every one of these, he either paid up or was found liable in court. He’s the last person in America who should decide who gets paid for reporting fraud.

Robert Garcia Wants To Know Who

 Called

Trump’s family has another deal that Democrats in Congress want explained. In August of 2025, 1789 Capital—the investment firm where Don Jr. is a partner—bought a stake in Vulcan Elements. The company makes magnets that the Pentagon needs.

Only a month or two later, the Pentagon’s office that makes business loans was given word that the White House wanted Vulcan’s loan done. ProPublica reported in May of this year that the request came directly from Trump’s trade adviser Peter Navarro, who went to prison for contempt of Congress in 2024.

“The call came from the White House: We have to get this done,” one person involved told ProPublica. They finished it in weeks. And about a week before the announcement, Navarro was a guest on Don Jr.’s podcast.

Then in November 2025, the Pentagon announced a record-setting $620 million loan commitment to Vulcan. Don Jr.’s spokesman said he “has no knowledge about how this deal came together” and claimed he didn’t speak to Navarro about Vulcan.

The Pentagon and Vulcan both said politics had no influence on the loan. Top House Democrats Robert Garcia and Jared Huffman didn’t buy it. On August 11 of this year, they wrote to Vulcan demanding 17 sets of records on how the deal happened.

If Democrats win the House, Garcia will likely chair Oversight. Which means he will have the subpoena power to move this investigation and so many others forward. We will make sure he does.

He Fired The Fraud Cops In January

Catching deals like the one Garcia is chasing is supposed to be an inspector general’s job. They are independent investigators inside every big federal agency who look for waste and fraud.

On January 24, 2025, four days after Trump was sworn in, he fired about 17 of them. The next day, a reporter on Air Force One asked him why. He said it was “because it’s a very common thing to do.” That’s a lie. The Inspector General Act (IGA) says a president has to give Congress 30 days’ notice and a reason before firing one.

Eight of the fired inspectors general took Trump to court. On September 24, 2025, Judge Ana Reyes wrote, “President Trump violated the IGA. That much is obvious.” Reyes didn’t give them their jobs back, but the case is still open.

Trump’s new fraud hotline sends you to a website called America.gov, which forwards your tip to the offices of inspectors general at agencies like Health and Human Services, Veterans Affairs, and the Small Business Administration—Trump fired the inspectors general at all three. And the site’s own assistant says it “cannot look up a report or its status.”

Trump fired the fraud cops. A judge said that broke the law. Now he wants you to do their job, for money that may never show up. If Democrats win the House, those inspectors general could be called in to testify. Voting to make that happen has already started.

Who Actually Gets To Collect

While Trump keeps talking about paying people who catch fraud, his pardons have repeatedly let convicted fraudsters off the hook for money they owe. On August 21, Rep. Jamie Raskin released a report called “Pardons, Inc.” It goes case by case through Trump’s pardons and commutations, adding up what those people no longer have to pay. That total came to nearly $1.7 billion.

In July 2024, a jury convicted Carlos Watson of conspiracy to commit fraud. A judge ordered him and his company to pay $37 million to investors he had lied to. The following March, Watson was on a plane en route to prison when he got word Trump commuted his sentence. Raskin’s report says: “They never paid a dime.”

A jury and a judge did their jobs, and Trump wiped that out. Because under this regime, the fraudster keeps the money. “Presidential clemency is supposed to be an instrument of justice and mercy,” Raskin said, “not another MAGA Get-Rich-Quick-Scheme.”

The report also names the lobbyists who pushed for these pardons, including the one Watson hired. If we take back the House, Raskin can put every one of them under oath.

With just 10 days left, voters are already lining up in record numbers. Every hour of every day, we’re digging up what Trump’s regime wants hidden and putting it in front of millions of voters in the states that decide who controls Congress.

I haven’t felt energy like this since the fall of 2008, right before Obama won. That January, I helped run his inaugural train ride from Philadelphia to DC. People stood out in the freezing cold for hours just to wave at the train going by. That was the victory lap. The election isn’t over, and what we do now decides it.

All of our work in these last 10 days is paid for by readers like you, and we need all hands on deck. If you haven’t yet, join us as a paid subscriber today.

Then hit the ❤️ like button and restack this, so your friends see Trump’s record before they vote.

Onward!

Scott

JUST A FEW OF MANY COMMENTS:

I have my fingers and toes crossed that it does happen despite the GOP suppression

I just discovered I can cross my toes!!

Trump Tries to Pull a Fast One at the Expense of Alaskan Republicans

Our very own Donald J. Trump has ordered his Attorney General, Todd Blanche, who was his former personal criminal defense attorney, to file a lawsuit contending that because there is a Daniel J Sullivan Jr on the bottom of the same ballot for U.S. Senator from Alaska as the current Senator from Alaska, Dan S. Sullivan, who is on the top of the ballot and is clearly indicated as the incumbent Senator from Alaska, that if the incumbent Senator Sullivan loses, the court should nevertheless declare Senator Sullivan the winner because the Republican electorate was too stupid to tell one from the other, even though Senator Dan S. Sullivan has been representing Alaska for the past 11 years, served as its Attorney General before then, and is known to all.

Trump’s suit, if in fact he even has standing to raise the issue, is offensive to all Republicans in the State of Alaska, who unquestionably know the name and face of their incumbent Senator for the past 11 years who had also been their former Attorney General.

Also, given the $369 million dollar war chest that Elon Musk has disbursed to Republican candidates around the country, wouldn’t you think that if he felt that there might be any confusion, he would have peeled off a few million dollars to plaster signs throughout the state refreshing their recollection as to who has been their Senator for them.

We need a Constitutional Amendment to liberate the DOJ and the Inspectors General from the Executive Branch and set them up as independent branches of the Government. They will need new appointment paradigms and required qualifications. No president should be able to corrupt or compromise either.

I want them all impeached and removed once the house and senate are blue.

Ten days. That’s it. The people who’ve been showing up for this work since the beginning are still here, and the ones just finding us are about to see what that looks like in real time. We’ve been through the long stretches before. This one feels different because the other side is the one scrambling. Keep going.

You're so right, Scott. We’re not watching this one from the sidelines. We’re the ones who get to decide how it ends.

Go Blue Poem

Voting is a citizens Constitutional right

It's your patriotic duty to join the fight

A president doesn't have the right to meddle or interfere

If he was doing a good job, he would have nothing to fear

The Republican party only cares about their billionaire donors

They treat us common citizens as if we were all stoners

President Trump enriches himself and we pay the bill

He fears our vote will remove him from Capitol Hill

Elon Musk has spent hundreds of millions on this election

He has exploited America out of billions and needs protection

Trump and Musk are building an oligarchy in America

This is why they betray our Allies and cozy up to Russia

Putin is a brutal dictator and barbarian

Only Trump would call him a humanitarian

Putin wages war on America by supporting Iran

Trump's family is profiting from the war as only Trump can

Putin is a war criminal by indiscriminately killing civilians

He kidnapps children and destroys religious pavilions

He is losing the war and needed sanctions lifted

Trump's deal gives Putin billions and the lifted sanctions gifted

America is glad Stephen Hubbard was released by Russia

The price Trump paid benefits him but not America

Trump and Musk cut off Ukraine's access to Starlink

They help Putin and betray Ukraine makes one think

There is so much at stake in this midterm election

Democracy needs your help by making the right selection

Republicans have betrayed us for an oligarchy system

They want absolute power and fear a free election

Early Voting has begun in many States

Democracy is more valuable than Trump's rebates

Anger & frustration are not good reasons to give up your vote

The billionaires have a knife to democracy's throat

Our costs of raising a family keep rising

Our economy is in peril is not surprising

All 4 letters sent. I hope and pray that the blue wave crashes the shore! We have to get these goons out of all levels of our government!

I'm not sure about impeachment. This hasn't worked on Trump before. I want ALL of these asshats criminally convicted and then imagine hearing their prison cell doors slam shut and buzzer locked!!! We then must start on dismantling The Heritage Foundation and Citizens United, and hand out prison sentences there where warranted, as well.

Thank you for all you do, Scott. Your optimism is contagious and I share that! Thank you!!

Refusing to Be Complicit (redux)

Dispatches of alarm and hope, on politics and society, democracy and justice. Because silence is not an option. We may read and write alone, but we drive change together.

Refusing to Be Complicit (redux)

In his first week, the newly inaugurated president proved (once again) that he rejects our laws, values and principles. It's a mistake for Democrats to try and work with him.

It’s been hard to take off a few days—or even a few hours—since Donald Trump stepped foot again in our White House. But I would be wrong to urge you to take time off to manage the madness and distress of this dark chapter, then burn out myself. This week is spring break at New York University where I teach journalism students, so I’m taking a few days away and trying to not get swept up by each new desecration.

In the meantime, I want to share with you this essay from January 27, just one week into the accelerating destruction by a man who acts more like an arsonist than a president. With the mounting examples of cowardice since then—of people and organizations bowing down—it’s important to reassert the need to oppose this cruel and dangerous regime.

I stand by what I said two months ago: We must refuse to be complicit. The more you give in to Trump, the more he will take. And, I wrote, “going along with even some of Trump’s policies in order to minimize the damage represents collaborating with a man bent on the destruction of American democracy and aiding his effort.”

This has become increasingly clear. So is the need to fight back, as I concluded here, “against the dark tide of oligarchy and authoritarian corruption and criminality—or we will sink like a stone.”

This takes courage—and it will take us sticking together, supporting each other, protecting each other, and recognizing our collective power to withstand Donald Trump’s fascist agenda.

Refusing to Be Complicit

Anyone who’s spent time with an abusive narcissist understands the dilemma: If you just go along to get along, you’ll never escape their grip. And if you confront them, they will do anything they can to make your life a living hell—until you get away or they leave forever.

America is trapped right now in this ugly nexus, thanks to millions of Americans who identified with Donald Trump’s anger and hatreds or didn’t comprehend the dangerous choice they were making.

But we have a chance to overcome this dark chapter with a clear, fearless opposition. That will require elected officials refusing to work with him and abandoning the idea that collaboration is the only way they can mitigate the damage he will cause or accomplish something themselves. The more they give him, the more he will take. The more they communicate that they accept his dominance and respect his power, the more he will exploit their vulnerability, particularly because he sadistically relishes harming and demeaning others.

We saw that dynamic play out yesterday when the president of Colombia initially rejected two military planes carrying deported migrants, demanding that the U.S. create a protocol that treats these people with dignity before they would be repatriated. It was a moment when a significant trading partner and ally reminded all of us what we are fighting for.

“A migrant is not a criminal and must be treated with the dignity that a human being deserves,” Colombia’s President Gustavo Petro said. “That is why I returned the U.S. military planes that were carrying Colombian migrants.” Petro went on to say that his country would receive these citizens only if they are transported “in civilian planes, without being treated like criminals.”

The bellicose, over-the-top response from Trump? He would immediately put a 25 percent tariff on Colombia and issue a travel ban revoking the visas of Colombian government officials as well as their allies. “These measures are just the beginning,” Trump threatened in a Truth Social post.

Could Trump have picked up a telephone and had a simple conversation? Of course, he could have and should have. It’s not like there wasn’t an easy solution. Colombia received 475 flights with migrants deported from the U.S. between 2020 and 2024, according to the Associated Press, including 124 in 2024.

But the abusive Trump preferred to bully this strategically important ally, which buys billions of dollars in U.S. exports, including corn which is important to U.S. farming states. Reluctant to escalate the unnecessary dispute, Petro’s government subsequently announced that the country would make available their own presidential planes to pick up the migrants and provide them “dignified conditions.”

Classic Trump case: Escalate a minor dispute that could have been resolved calmly and simply. Exploit the “crisis” he created to pound his chest and pretend that it demonstrates how powerful he is. “I have directed my Administration to take…urgent and decisive retaliatory measures,” Trump posted.

This extreme reaction concerned less than 200 migrants, but late last night Petro reversed course to avoid a trade war by allowing even military aircraft. And the false Trump response, delivered by White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt: “Today’s events make clear to the world that America is respected again.”

Donald Trump doesn’t care about or respect laws. He doesn’t care about or believe in American democratic values and principles like equality, diversity and justice. He rejects free speech and despises the peaceful assembly of those who disagree with him. He is bored by the details of policy and governance, belittles the value of expertise, only wants attention and spectacle, and is determined to surround himself with sycophants who will bow down to him. He doesn’t care about or comprehend the pain he causes other human beings. He is more than ready to use political violence to get what he wants.

He will never make an effort to unify the nation. He will never rely on inspiration, only stoke fear, seek to intimidate and threaten violence. He will never work to gain the trust of the majority.

Is this an American president? Are we obliged—are elected Democrats obliged—to treat such a man with respect? This is the person who pardoned over 1,500 convicted felons who attacked the U.S. Capitol; just this weekend he invited the remorseless Oath Keepers founder Stewart Rhodes—freshly released from prison and his 18-year sentence for seditious conspiracy—to appear behind him in a Nevada rally.

Should Democrats find ways to work with Trump or oppose him at every turn? Is there any reason to believe he will do anything to make lives better rather than commit acts to glorify himself and enrich himself and his billionaire cronies by stealing from the wealth created by hard-working Americans?

As I see it, going along with even some of Trump’s policies in order to minimize the damage represents collaborating with a man bent on the destruction of American democracy and aiding his effort. I understand the decision of 13 Senate Democrats (many from border states) to sign a letter to Majority Leader John Thune, offering to work with him “in good faith” to craft border security and immigration legislation. But do they really think Trump will ever work with them in good faith, especially as he’s focused on mass deportation, building a wall (again) and demonizing refugees and Democrats?

As the transgressions and degradations and the acts of corruption and criminality mount—and, yes, they already have been at an alarming pace meant to shock the unsuspecting—we should demand that Democratic leaders and anyone who is committed to overcoming this dark chapter in our history refuse to work with this regime.

That will become even more important as he is surrounded by dangerously reckless cabinet secretaries and others in leadership positions motivated to carry out his agenda, satisfy his hunger for vengeance and dismantle the very government programs and agencies they have sworn to serve. Soon the deeply unfit Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth will likely be joined by the retribution-minded Kash Patel at the FBI, the Putin-supporting Tulsi Gabbard as the Director of National Intelligence and Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. “running” Health and Human Services.

But Trump isn’t waiting for their arrival. Late Friday night, seeking to consolidate his power and get rid of independent watchdogs, the White House fired 18 independent inspectors general working in nearly every cabinet-level agency. This purge makes it easier for Trump to install loyalists who will be less likely to question fraud, abuse or other ethical lapses.

“It’s a very common thing to do,” Trump lied. In fact, federal law requires a 30-day notice and a substantive rationale before any such removals can happen. This is one case where even Republicans questioned Trump’s trampling of federal law, although a Trump spokesperson denied they did anything wrong.

“I don’t know them,” Trump lied. In fact, some of these government watchdogs were appointed by Trump himself in his first term.

The list of violations will keep accumulating. Soon the evidence will mount of immigrant roundups that extend far beyond criminals. Each of us will have a role to play in speaking out, pushing back and doing what we can to protect the most vulnerable among us. This is a time when silence clearly equates with complicity.

Recall the wise words of Elie Wiesel, survivor of the Holocaust, Nobel laureate and great humanist author: “We must take sides. Neutrality helps the oppressor, never the victim. Silence encourages the tormentor, never the tormented. Sometimes we must interfere.”

So where can we look for inspiration? Over the weekend, I finally had the chance to see A Complete Unknown, the excellent film about Bob Dylan. It’s not only a remarkable portrait of the artist as a young man, emerging onto a global stage, but also a recounting of how significant Dylan was in helping catalyze change in America in the 1960s. It made me think about how badly we need new voices now that can help capture the public’s consciousness and drive positive change.

Permit me to finish here with some lyrics from one of Dylan’s most famous songs that led observers to call him—to Dylan’s displeasure—”the voice of a generation.”

Come gather 'round people

Wherever you roam

And admit that the waters

Around you have grown

And accept it that soon

You'll be drenched to the bone

If your time to you is worth savin'

And you better start swimmin'

Or you'll sink like a stone

For the times they are a-changin'

Yes, these words were written long ago, in 1963, but they surely speak to our own era. These are times to recognize the waters have grown (literally and figuratively). We need to swim—to fight against the dark tide of oligarchy and authoritarian corruption and criminality—or we will sink like a stone.

We have to prove that we will not be drowned, not just to be resilient in the face of hostile forces, but capable of confronting and overcoming them.
