MIDDLEBORO REVIEW AND SO ON

After months of stonewalling, we finally got inside.
It’s Raja Krishnamoorthi. Just days ago, I was finally granted access to conduct Congressional oversight at the Broadview ICE detention facility — a place the Trump Administration repeatedly tried to keep me out of.
They denied access. They delayed action. They threw up every bureaucratic roadblock they could find.
But here’s what they didn’t count on: a federal court reaffirming what should have been obvious all along — Congress has the constitutional authority to conduct oversight of executive branch facilities.
So we went in. And what did we find? Multiple people detained there, in contradiction to what the Trump Administration would have you believe. What continues to worry me is that many of the individuals who are detained by ICE have only been charged with a crime — not convicted. Mere suspicion is leading to detention and sometimes, deportation.
What happens behind closed doors matters. When an administration tries this hard to prevent congressional oversight, it’s our job to ask why. What are they hiding? What conditions don’t they want us to see? Which voices don’t they want us to hear?
Transparency isn’t a courtesy — it’s a constitutional requirement. And accountability isn’t optional when we’re talking about how human beings are being treated in facilities funded by taxpayer dollars.
This won’t be the last time this administration tries to block legitimate oversight. But it also won’t be the last time we fight back using every legal tool available to us.
Congressional oversight exists for moments exactly like this. And I’m committed to using it at every turn. But I can’t do this alone.
Your support — whether it’s $5, $25, or whatever you can afford — helps power my campaign to stand up to Trump and hold his administration accountable. Will you chip in today to join our team?
With gratitude,
Raja Krishnamoorthi
