Massachusetts can lead an equitable transition to 100 percent renewable electricity by 2035, according to new analysis by the Union of Concerned Scientists and GreenRoots. The research indicates we can get rid of fossil fuel pollution from the power sector, and make progress across the economy, in the near term. The results of the latest Intergovernmental Panel for Climate Change report show that the current trajectory of heat-trapping emissions is alarmingly off-track. Emissions must be cut sharply within this decade and decline to net-zero by 2050 to limit global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius. The electricity sector has a key role to play in climate action as we electrify transportation and heating. Massachusetts must speed up its efforts to clean the electric grid—act now. Our analysis shows that a more rapid, equitable transition to 100 percent renewable energy is possible and would bring health and economic benefits:
