Donald Trump is ramping up his assault on progressive nonprofit organizations, and we must assume that it’s only a matter of time before he or his authoritarian allies come after nonprofit, independent news outlets like Common Dreams.
As we reported earlier this month, White House Deputy Chief of Staff Stephen Miller is leading an effort by multiple agencies, including the FBI, to criminalize left-wing dissent as “domestic terrorism.”
Meanwhile, The Wall Street Journal reported that a senior IRS official has already compiled an initial list of progressive groups for the IRS criminal investigative division to target.
Trump’s goal is to intimidate his critics into shutting up — but we refuse to be muzzled.
Our plan is simple, but not without risks. We plan to continue our reporting in service of the common good, democracy, the rule of law, and a brighter future for all. We don’t bow to authoritarians. We don’t bow to corporate interests. We will remain loyal to our mission and to our readers.
