FOCUS: Bernie Sanders: Can You Imagine Giving Donald Trump $500 Billion With No Strings Attached?

Reader Supported News
25 March 20

What all this hoopla over fundraising is all about is a basic budget for the organization. It a simple thing, a straight forward thing and something that, when ignored, creates large immediate problems.

It’s funding, getting it squared away is not a crime, it’s a necessity.

In earnest.

FOCUS: Bernie Sanders: Can You Imagine Giving Donald Trump $500 Billion With No Strings Attached?

Hains writes: "Sen. Sanders tells Chris Hayes, 'Our job is to act in an unprecedented way, both in terms of healthcare and the economy.'"

Sen. Sanders tells Chris Hayes, “Our job is to act in an unprecedented way, both in terms of healthcare and the economy.”

EN. BERNIE SANDERS (I-VT), PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATE: Well, my feeling is that you cannot simply give $50 billion for the airline industry. And, of course, this crisis is not their making, but you can't just give them that money to do anything they want. If we're going to bail out the airline industry, if you're going to bail out tourism, if you're going to bail out hotels, et cetera, what you have to do is make sure that that money is going to protect working people.

And what you're seeing in the United Kingdom, in other countries, that they are saying to employers, if you retain your workers, even if you furlough them, even if they're working from home, they're going to continue to get the paycheck that the government is providing.

So bottom line is yes, I do understand that major industries through no fault of their own are in trouble. But our job is not to make these industries richer, not to allow them to do stock buybacks but to protect the workers in those companies.

CHRIS HAYES, MSNBC: I wanted to get your reaction. One provision that seems a sticking point in the latest negotiations is about disclosure. This is really striking.

As the legislation is currently written -- I'm quoting "The New York Times" here -- Mr. Mnuchin, treasury secretary, would not have to disclose the recipients of these, you know, grants, loans, given out by the Treasury until six months after the loans were disbursed.

What do you think of that?

SANDERS: Well, I know you know what I think about that. I think that that is totally insane and unacceptable. Can you imagine giving the Trump administration $500 billion and, by the way, in the midst of an election to do anything they want with that money, to give the money to any company they want, any state they want, with no transparency at all. That is absolutely wrong.

Look, Chris, the truth is right now, we face at this moment in terms of the pandemic, in terms of the economic meltdown, the most serious set of crises that have been faced in this country perhaps for a hundred years. And our job right now is to think big, is to act in an unprecedented way both in terms of health care and in terms of the economy.

And it is going to cost a lot of money. But not spending that money now will make a bad situation even worse because as you know, there are some people out there talking about by the end of June, unemployment being 20, 25, 30 percent. So, right now, our focus has got to be, in my view, to make sure that all workers in this country are kept whole, they continue to get their paycheck, to make certain that in addition to that, people get a check of $2,000 a month to make certain right now that we move in an unbelievably aggressive way, to make sure that our health care providers, our doctors and our nurses are not dying on the job trying to protect us.

And that means that Trump has got to enforce in a vigorous way the Defense Production Act, to make sure that companies now are not producing t-shirts and underwear, that is not our major need at the moment. Masks, gowns, gloves are the need. And companies have got to do that. Some are already voluntarily doing that. They need to be compensated well. But they've got to transform their production capabilities to deal with the crises that we face right now.

The other thing I think, Chris, you know, is that while Congress -- and there are going to be people up all night right now working on this $2 trillion bill, people are working really hard. They understand the extent of the tragedy. We also have to take a deep breath and ask how we got to be in a country where so many people are in financial despair right now.

What I worry about is that at a time when half of our people live in paycheck-to-paycheck, those paychecks are stopping. There are people out there watching this program who are saying, I can't feed my kids tomorrow.

How did we get there? How did we have a health care system which was so unprepared, among many other things, for this epidemic?

RAND PAUL - REMEMBER THIS! Rand Paul Tests Positive for Coronavirus Days After His Father Dismissed Panic Over the Disease as a Hoax

Image may contain: 1 person, possible text that says 'MILLENNIAL MAJ ORITY ""The GOP is refusing to increase money for hospitals, but HAVE increased corporate bailout money.' "The Senate GOP plan is corrupt. "Their greed & incompetence is going to get people killed. Others will be displaced, or unable to eat. "They're holding our country hostage for a allStreet payday." Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez'

As we posted yesterday -
Reminder - Rand Paul outed the whistle-blower during the impeachment hearings, and the day after daddy wrote the "hoax" column he delayed the vote on the first bill designed to help Americans dealing with the COViD-19 virus, while trying to get an anti-immigrant amendment that would also end the fighting in Afghanistan.

EXCERPT:
He also called Dr. Anthony Fauci, head of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases at the National Institutes of Health, the "chief fearmonger" who "did his best to further damage an already tanking economy," when Fauci appeared on the TV program Face the Nation.
"Over what? A virus that has thus far killed just over 5,000 worldwide and less than 100 in the United States?" Ron Paul wrote.
"By contrast, tuberculosis, an old disease not much discussed these days, killed nearly 1.6 million people in 2017. Where's the panic over this?" he also said, before adding that individuals should "ask themselves whether this coronavirus 'pandemic' could be a big hoax."
Although he went on to say that the disease isn't "harmless," Ron Paul also noted that governments have overhyped a "threat as an excuse to grab more of our freedoms" in the past.
Newsweek reached out to the Ron Paul Institute for comment.

NO CORPORATE BAILOUTS! ...and about RAND PAUL?

But, my friends daughter in NY has 104 fever and a dry cough and they cannot get her tested anywhere.'

You'll want to read this. Every word

Dear fellow MoveOn member,

I am so furious that I need to shout from the rooftops. But we're in lockdown, so I'm emailing you: No industry—not airlines, not hotel chains, not cruise ships—should be bailed out.

Congress is feverishly negotiating a sweeping economic stabilization bill that is expected to pass next week. The details of it are changing rapidly, but Donald Trump and Mitch McConnell are proposing hundreds of billions of dollars in bailouts for the airline industry and other industries that recklessly mismanaged their budgets by fattening the pockets of their CEOs. And now, these wealthy executives are begging Republicans for a taxpayer handout.

But guess how much the lowest-earning Americans will get if Trump and McConnell have their way? A measly $600.1 It's disgraceful.

We may have only a few days to pressure lawmakers to rise to the challenge of this unprecedented moment and make sure that our government bails out the American people, not corporations. That's why I'm writing to you now.

Think about all of the people across America who are constantly checking their local newspapers' websites to learn the latest about how the pandemic is affecting their communities; that's what I'm doing, and you might be, too. But what if, in addition to showing the much-needed news updates, the newspapers' websites showed ads pressuring Congress to give a lifeline to people, not corporations, in the economic stimulus bill? These ads will make lawmakers, who I can assure you care about what's said in their local papers, take serious notice.

This powerful ad campaign is exactly what MoveOn plans to implement, but only if they can raise $200,000 by Monday.

Will you join me in rushing a donation of $3 to MoveOn right now?

As former secretary of the U.S. Department of Labor, I can tell you that there is no justification whatsoever to bailing out corporations right now. The airline industry certainly doesn't deserve a bailout: The biggest U.S. airlines spent 96% of their cash flow over the past decade to buy back shares of their own stock in order to boost executive bonuses and please wealthy investors. American Airlines alone repurchased more than $12.5 billion of its shares over the past 10 years.

But McConnell expects us to bail them out to the tune of $50 billion?

The airlines can stay in business by borrowing at rock-bottom rates, using their assets as collateral. Regular Americans living paycheck to paycheck don't have that same option.

We need to come together right now to demand Congress put people first and pass an economic stimulus bill to support Americans in need, not provide bailouts for big businesses.

Will you rush a donation of $3 to MoveOn right now, so they can launch high-profile ads on the webpages of local newspapers, pressuring key senators to do the right thing and bail out people, not corporations?

Just three weeks ago, Trump claimed that the coronavirus was "going to disappear. One day—it's like a miracle—it will disappear."2

And on that same day, Republican Senator Richard Burr warned wealthy constituents in a private meeting of the dire consequences that would arise from the crisis. He advised the well-connected group to prepare to alter their travel plans, warned that schools will probably close, and predicted that the military may be mobilized to combat the outbreak.3 When addressing the general public, however, he followed Trump's lead and minimized the severity of the crisis.

And then, Burr sold $1.5 million of his stock holdings, right before the market nosedived.

This is outrageous, and yet another example of Republicans serving their own interests and those of the wealthy over the needs of the American people. Unless we hold GOP lawmakers' feet to the fire, the economic stimulus bill won't help everyday Americans who urgently need help the most.

Seemingly overnight, so many people in every community in America have lost their jobs or are facing a severe cutback in hours due to the pandemic.

Congress has to do the right thing in this unprecedented moment: It must put people first, small businesses second, and big business last.

Please, chip in $3 to MoveOn right now to hold GOP lawmakers accountable and to make Congress pass the stimulus bill to help the American people in this unprecedented moment.

Thanks for all you do.

–Robert Reich

P.S. My new book, out this Tuesday, March 24, explores the power dynamics that left us with a system that puts corporations before people and leaves so many behind, especially in times of crises. Please order a copy today to understand how we got into this mess, and how we get out.
