Nancy Pelosi's strategy has laid bare the GOP's internal rot

Photo of Nancy Pelosi signing the articles of impeachment before transmitting them to the Senate.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi firmly held on to the articles of impeachment until more evidence for removing Trump from office came forward.

Since then, John Bolton VOLUNTEERED to testify, Lev Parnas provided tomes of evidence further implicating Trump, the Government Accountability Office released a report stating the Trump administration DID commit a crime in withholding the aid to Ukraine, and Mitch McConnell’s control of his GOP caucus has finally begun to crumble.

No matter how this ends, the GOP cannot deny that Trump committed crimes and that they made every attempt to cover it up. Nancy Pelosi has shown America the raw truth of Trump’s Republican Party, and voters are paying attention ahead of November 2020.

Nancy Pelosi has continuously rallied Democrats together and fended off GOP attacks with grace and dignity. But she can’t be the only one fighting. Engaged Democrats across the country need to have her back as we head into the next election. We need to hear from you today:

Absolute betrayal of our constitutional obligations

Blumenthal for Connecticut

Today, I voted to impeach President Trump for his brazen abuse of power and obstruction of Congress.
As I sat in the Senate chamber, I could not help but watch in dismay as colleagues voted to acquit the President – betraying their constitutional obligation to uphold our democracy and the rule of law. This was a moment that challenged us to put country above party. Yet, Senate Republicans chose instead to follow a cult of personality that will further fuel corrupt behavior. I have no doubt that history will haunt them for failing to meet this challenge.
Here’s the bottom line: This vote wasn’t just about whether Trump solicited a political bribe from a foreign leader in a corrupt abuse of power for his own personal gain (which he undeniably did). It was also about what kind of country we want America to be. My Republican colleagues just sent a message to the American people that their President answers to no one – even when he invites foreign interference in our elections. This exact situation was our Founding Fathers’s worst nightmare and why they established impeachment powers in the first place.
I still believe that this President should be – and will be – accountable to those he was elected to serve. The facts will come out. The truth will matter. And it will be because of the bravery of dedicated public servants who had everything to lose and nothing to gain by coming forward – and because of the free press doing the investigative work that Senate Republicans were too cowardly to face.
I promise that the outcome of this White House cover-up and sham trial doesn’t change the facts. I will keep fighting to hold Trump accountable, and I need you all in this fight with me. We have the chance to secure justice at the ballot box this November, so we can’t let up right now. This is not the time to get discouraged. It’s time to get to work.
Thank you,
Dick
The Senate impeachment trial may be over, but I’m still fighting tirelessly in the Senate to hold President Trump accountable for his illegal and rampant abuse of power. As we enter a new stage of this fight to secure justice, I need to know if you’re with me.

My Thoughts on Impeachment

Today, the Senate concluded its impeachment trial of President Trump. After listening to the impeachment managers and the President's defense team, and carefully weighing the overwhelming evidence that was presented, I voted to find President Trump guilty on both articles of impeachment. I believe there would have been even more evidence to support this conclusion, but the Senate was denied the opportunity to see relevant documents and hear from firsthand witnesses.

This was not a decision I made lightly, and I took no pleasure in it. However, based on the evidence, I concluded that the President's actions posed an ongoing threat to our democracy and warranted his impeachment and removal from office. Our President asked a foreign leader to announce a sham investigation into his political rival and withheld critical U.S. military aid in an effort to secure that investigation. He then obstructed the House of Representatives impeachment inquiry - refusing to allow relevant witnesses to testify or produce key documents and emails. To this day, the information blockade continues. These actions constitute abuse of power and obstruction of Congress.

Before the votes, I spoke in more detail on the Senate floor about my reflections on the impeachment trial. You can read my remarks at https://go.senate.gov/X15V or watch them at https://go.senate.gov/YW11.
Despite the outcome of the Senate vote, we must now look to the future and redouble our efforts to deliver on good governance for our country. I will continue my work to meet the needs and priorities of Rhode Islanders, like rebuilding our roads and schools, protecting affordable access to health care, and creating more decent-paying jobs across the state. And we must all work to build a better, stronger America together.

Stunning new poll (impeachment)

Dear MoveOn member,
It's day 5 of the Senate impeachment trial of Donald Trump, and there's not a single ad on TV right now putting pressure on the Republican senators most likely to break with Mitch McConnell to force witnesses to be called and for the White House to hand over documents related to the Ukraine scandal.1

Yet a new poll shows that about 72% of Americans agree that the trial "should allow witnesses with firsthand knowledge of the impeachment charges to testify," including 69% of Republicans.2 Yes, 69% of Republicans agree! Rachel Maddow called the results "stunning."3

It would take only four Republican senators to join with the Democrats to turn McConnell's kangaroo court into a fair trial that can uncover the full extent of Trump's transgressions.

We urgently need to turn up the heat. There are 11 impeachment ads running on TV right now, and all 11 support Trump. There's not a single ad targeting Republican senators to demand a fair trial and hold Trump accountable, causing Chuck Todd of "Meet the Press" to ask, "Why aren't Democrats making life miserable for vulnerable Republicans on impeachment?"4

MoveOn's Creative Lab, which has created powerful ads seen by millions of Americans, has swung into action to produce hard-hitting ads and start to get them up on TV in the states with senators we can influence, after MoveOn members chipped in an incredible $300,000 in the last 36 hours. But it's very expensive to run TV ads, and we need to raise another $200,000 by Monday to place the ads in time for the planned Senate vote on whether to hear from witnesses, which is likely to take place late next week.

Will you make an emergency donation of $3 right now to help us run hard-hitting impeachment ads on TV in key states?
The second article of Trump's impeachment is for obstructing Congress: covering up witnesses and withholding documents from the American people.
Trump has blocked his closest aides from testifying and has refused to hand over a single document—a single email, text message, letter, phone transcript ... any document—related to the Ukraine scandal.
All 53 Republican senators actively participated in the cover-up last Tuesday night, voting 10 separate times to block subpoenas for Trump administration witnesses and documents, and to otherwise rig the trial rules.5

Trump bragged about it, saying, "[H]onestly, we have all the material. They don't have the material."6

But McConnell was forced to agree to a Senate vote on whether to hear from witnesses after the opening arguments and senators' questions—which means that we have a narrow window of time to increase pressure on the Republican senators who have been wavering.
We have organizers on the ground in the states of key senators and are lighting up the Senate switchboard with phone calls, but it's not enough. We need to raise another $200,000 by Monday to get our hard-hitting impeachment ads up on TV in the key states. And we need your help to do it.

Will you rush an urgent donation of $3 to help us run hard-hitting impeachment ads on TV in key states?
Yes, I'll chip in now.

Together, we can hold Trump accountable. But it's going to take each and every one of us.
Thanks for all you do.
