The California wildfires: Standing together for animals Like millions of people worldwide, we have been shocked to our core by the harrowing sight of the wildfires ravaging Southern California over the last week. The devastation is staggering, the losses are terrible to imagine, and the emotional impact of this catastrophe on its victims is difficult to contemplate. Our hearts are broken by it all. Members of our Animal Rescue Team are in close communication with the California Animal Welfare Association (CalAnimals), and with the state’s Office of Emergency Management and the Los Angeles County Emergency Management Department. Staff members of our Pets for Life program in Los Angeles, which works to provide pet care resources to communities in need all year round helped transport pets with urgent veterinary care needs and we are covering costs of vet care for pets of fire victims.

Our rescuers gave hundreds of needy animals in Oklahoma a holiday miracle Before dawn on a freezing morning just days before the winter holidays, our Animal Rescue Team met with law enforcement in an Oklahoma parking lot to prepare for a massive rescue operation.   Good news to start 2025: These state laws are now in place for animals in the US In 2025, several significant state-level measures resulting from our public policy efforts take effect. These are milestone achievements which are alleviating suffering and improving the lives of animals across the nation.

Grizzly bears will retain key Endangered Species Act protections In a move supporting the notion that the species needs more time to recover, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service announced in early January that it would not prematurely remove Endangered Species Act protections from grizzly bears living in the Greater Yellowstone and Northern Continental Divide ecosystems.   Wolves score a win in the fight over their protections in the US In an additional victory for wildlife, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service denied two petitions filed by trophy hunting organizations aimed at removing federal Endangered Species Act protections for wolves in the Western Great Lakes region and reducing or removing protections for wolves in other areas of the lower 48 states.

New documentary short puts the focus on Africa’s big tusker elephants Our team in Africa released a new documentary that highlights the threat to East Africa’s super tusker elephants from renewed trophy hunting in the region. An elephant is considered a super tusker when at least one tusk weighs over 100 pounds.   Edye Lou and her dog Levi are staunch supporters for all animals Edye Lou appreciates all aspects of the organization’s mission. She believes that her Legacy Plan means there isn’t a big period at the end of her life, and she can continue to bring hope to all of the animals who are counting on us for help.

Supporter update: A big year

Dogfighting survivor beats the odds In 2022, we assisted the U.S. Department of Agriculture, with the seizure of 275 dogs from an alleged dogfighting operation throughout multiple properties in the Columbia, South Carolina, area. We found Ray J chained to the ground with a massive chest injury. It took more than a year for him to recover both emotionally and physically but, as always, animals continue to show us how resilient they are. Despite all the obstacles, Ray J found a loving home. We hope you enjoy Ray J's story of hardship to happiness!

Mexico’s constitution now includes animal protection Our team in Mexico recently celebrated a massive achievement for animals: The country’s constitution now enshrines animal protection as a fundamental value. This gives the government new authority to legislate on animal welfare issues.   You won't believe this is the same bear Five years after arriving at Black Beauty Ranch, the internationally known hairless “bare bear” named Eve now has a healthy coat of fur and is living her happily-ever-after in her expansive natural habitat at the 1,400-acre Murchison, Texas sanctuary.

Major wins for farmed animals in 2024 Farmed animals suffer some of the cruelest treatment there is, and people are increasingly concerned about how they are treated. It has certainly been a memorable year in advancing the protection of these animals. Read more on some of the wins from around the world over this past year.   Tell Target: Animals deserve better! Nearly a decade ago, Target pledged to eliminate battery cages and gestation crates from its egg and pork supply chains. However, the company has now changed its mind and decided to keep selling eggs and pork that come from caged chickens and crated pigs indefinitely. We're gaining momentum against Target. Will you take action today?

New investigation exposes what a 'high welfare' fur farm really looks like It is astonishing that fur farms still even exist, given that they have been exposed as extremely cruel facilities that also pose terrible threats to public health. And yet, even knowing how horrific these places are, each investigation to expose and end this cruelty shocks us anew.   Doing Everything You Can Learning to love animals as a child, Tina became a dedicated rescuer and HSUS advocate as an adult. American pets are at risk

The team just received our scorecard from the Humane Society Legislative Fund and the Humane Society of the United States. As a member of the Congressional Animal Protection Caucus, it's with great pride that I share at 100+ score. I've been a primary sponsor of animal rights legislation, and have led on multiple legislative or regulatory efforts to protect animals. Right now, there's another issue facing animals in this country: Class B Dealers. Right now, if a pet goes missing and ends up at a local shelter, current law allows so-called "Class B dealers" to obtain animals from networks of animal shelters or shady suppliers, often using falsified records. Class B dealers then illegally sell animals to research facilities, where they can be tested in cruel experimental procedures.

Federal agencies have tried to regulate these dealers but to no avail. It's time to step up: Congress must ensure these cruel acts finally stop, once and for all. Sign my petition and demand my colleagues in Congress take action to shut down Class B animal dealers today.
