Yesterday’s shootings

 

Just moments after Charlie Kirk was shot yesterday in Utah, we learned of another shooting at Evergreen High School in Colorado — which left two students injured.

Only in America is news about a shooting interrupted by another shooting.

This is not a left or right issue. Gun violence affects us all, no matter where you live or who you voted for. Every day we choose not to act makes all of our communities less safe.

We cannot live like this.

We have the answers to help save lives from gun violence. Commonsense solutions including universal background checks, closing dangerous loopholes, and extreme risk protection orders to ensure guns don’t fall into the hands of people who shouldn’t have access to them.

But we need our leaders to find the courage to take action and protect our communities.

That is our mission at GIFFORDS. We’ve worked to help pass more than 700 laws in Congress and across the country to stand up to the gun lobby and protect our communities from gun violence.

We will continue working to fight for laws, policies, and programs proven to save lives.

Bad news...

 

President Trump has disbanded a federal school safety advisory board, which was created by Trump himself after the Parkland shooting where 17 people died. The goal of the advisory board was to help share resources and best practices related to school safety—an incredibly vital area of work, considering there were 330 shootings at schools in 2024.

Between this and his apparent dissolution of the federal Office of Gun Violence Prevention, it’s clear that President Trump is choosing the gun lobby over saving lives.

We’re hard at work urging the Trump Administration to reconstitute the federal school safety advisory board, and we need your help to fuel this critical effort.

The Office of Gun Violence Prevention is in jeopardy

 

The NSSF, which is the firearm industry’s trade association, is already calling on the incoming administration to dismantle the first-ever federal Office of Gun Violence Prevention.

The Office of Gun Violence Prevention was established by the Biden-Harris Administration in 2023. It has been a first-of-its-kind federal government effort to coordinate with states and federal officials to stop violence, invest in community intervention programs, respond to shootings, and support survivors.

In particular, the office is helping to distribute the largest investment in youth mental health ever, by giving $1 billion to schools across the country and hiring and training more than 14,000 mental health professionals who can help students process the trauma of gun violence. Shutting down this office would be a severe blow to public safety.

It’s no surprise that the NSSF, whose mission is gun manufacturer profits, would rather line their pockets through selling more firearms than keep our communities safe from preventable gun violence.

Our work to call on the Trump Administration to keep the Office of Gun Violence Prevention in place is well underway, and we need your support to help us in this important advocacy.
