On the first day of his second term in office, Trump signed an executive order supposedly “denying” birthright citizenship to certain children who were born in the United States to non-citizens. While no president has the authority to revoke birthright citizenship through executive order, this move was the first in a long line of ensuing attacks on immigrant rights and communities across America. Now, the Supreme Court is set to hear oral arguments in three cases challenging Trump’s dangerous and undemocratic executive order: Birthright citizenship is guaranteed by the 14th Amendment, and it’s a bedrock of the promise of America. It guarantees that if you were born on American soil, you’re an American citizen. The plain text of the 14th amendment itself makes this crystal clear. But legal history and constitutionality haven’t stopped this MAGA Supreme Court from taking away our rights before. If the Roberts Court sides with Trump, they could be on the brink of ripping apart almost 420 years of legal precedent for birthright citizenship. It’s more important than ever that we make our voices heard and hold this MAGA-corrupted Supreme Court accountable to the people.
