You have a powerful chance to help advance recovery of Mexican gray wolves – be sure to submit your public comment today! Fewer than 196 Mexican gray wolves still survive in the Southwest U.S., making these wolves one of the rarest native species in the region. Most of their deaths are caused by humans, and illegal killing is a huge threat to their continued survival. The power to protect them lies with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS): By adopting and enforcing strict Endangered Species Act (ESA) protections, the FWS can reduce illegal killings and give these wolves a chance to recover. We need to act now to prevent these wolves from going extinct. Reach out to the FWS and add your public comment in support of Mexican gray wolf recovery today! Add your voice: Urge the FWS to adopt and enforce strong ESA protections for Mexican gray wolves! Every Mexican gray wolf that is killed by humans threatens the survival of the entire species. Unless we put a stop to illegal killing, we could see these animals wiped out in our lifetimes. The FWS has tools that can help: The agency can take steps to prosecute more poachers. They can increase law enforcement during hunting season, when wolves are more at risk of being killed illegally. And they could fund more outreach to educate the public about threats to endangered Mexican gray wolves. They can do all this and more – but they need to hear your support to start making the survival of Mexican gray wolves a priority. Submitting your comment is easy and quick. Simply visit this page and click the blue “Comment” button in the top left corner of the page. Please be sure to submit your feedback before May 16th! You can share a message along the lines of the following sample letter, while adding your own comments: “Thank you for the opportunity to provide comments on the Mexican Wolf Draft Recovery Plan. I urge you to adopt and enforce the strictest Endangered Species Act protections for endangered Mexican gray wolves to reduce the risk of illegal killing. In particular, I ask that you increase law enforcement presence during hunting seasons and increase prosecution of poachers. Please also consider increasing funding and staff and improving public outreach to reduce wolf mortality. I also ask that you include firm requirements to use non-lethal resolution in wolf-livestock conflicts and release more captive wolves in more places to improve genetic diversity and hardiness for the species. Thank you for considering taking action to prevent the killing and extinction of Mexican gray wolves.” |
