The National Enquirer’s publisher, American Media Inc. (later renamed A360 Media), paid a $187,500 fine to the Federal Election Commission in 2021.
The fine concerned a $150,000 payment to former Playboy model Karen McDougal to acquire and suppress her story about an alleged affair with Donald Trump before the 2016 election. The FEC ruled that the payment amounted to an illegal corporate campaign contribution. The Enquirer was owned by Chatham Asset Management at the time.

A federal judge just issued an opinion rejecting Trump's latest attempt to reverse those convictions.
