Excerpt: "The four national co-chairs of Bernie Sanders's 2020 presidential campaign issued a joint statement Friday declaring: 'We stand with the grassroots activists who understand that the party must stand for extending Medicare to everyone.'"

Many hundreds of delegates are speaking out now with clarity to insist that Medicare for All belongs in the Democratic Party platform. They are correct to never waver in this fight for healthcare as a human right.”
In recent days, upwards of 700 delegates to the Democratic National Convention have signed a pledge saying they’ll vote NO on the party platform if it lacks a commitment to Medicare for All.
The 2020 campaign co-chairs – former Ohio state senator Nina Turner, Congressman Ro Khanna, San Juan mayor Carmen Yulin Cruz, and Ben & Jerry’s co-founder, Ben Cohen – noted in their statement: “During the last few months, millions of people in the United States have lost their jobs. They should not lose their healthcare. Now is the time to reclaim the legacy of the Democratic Party, which sought healthcare for all starting with FDR and Harry Truman but lost its way beginning in 1980 when Medicare for All was stripped from our party’s platform.”
The co-chairs’ statement was released by two activist organizations that supported Sanders for president, RootsAction.org and Progressive Democrats of America. Turner is currently the strategic delegate advisor for RootsAction.
“This strong statement of solidarity from all of the Bernie campaign’s national co-chairs is a boost to the organizing now underway with delegates to confront the failure of the party’s pending platform to truly treat healthcare as a human right,” RootsAction national director Norman Solomon said. “One nationwide poll after another, as well as primary election exit polling, have shown that Medicare for All has majority support. Increasingly, the absence of support for Medicare for All from the top of the Democratic Party is bad politics as well as inhumane.”
Progressive Democrats of America applauded the four co-chairs’ statement and said: “We also support the Democratic National Convention delegates who have vowed to vote against the party platform because Medicare for All is not included. By voicing their dissent, these delegates have ensured that the call for a humane, rational, cost-effective healthcare system will be heard during the convention – and this will benefit the Democratic Party.”
PDA added: “If there was no debate over healthcare during party convention season, it would play into the GOP's hands. The majority of Americans, especially Democrats and independents, recognize the failure of our current employer-based private health insurance system. COVID-19 has laid bare this failure, and proves the need for Medicare for All is more urgent than ever.”

Excerpt: "Today, two prominent national progressive organizations released an open letter to Vice President Joe Biden, calling on him to choose Senator Elizabeth Warren as his running mate."

RootsAction.org and Progressive Democrats of America – which together represent more than a million online and on-the-ground activists – named Warren as the vice-presidential candidate best positioned to unite the Democratic Party and defeat Donald Trump in November.
Both organizations strongly supported Bernie Sanders in the 2016 and 2020 primaries. PDA polled its members online last week, offering 12 possible running-mate choices: Warren had majority support, 33 points higher than the second-place finisher. (Another pro-Sanders organization, Our Revolution, announced last month that a poll of its membership found strong majority support for Warren as Biden’s Vice President.)
“For voters and activists who supported Bernie Sanders in the primary, it’s vital that Biden choose a running mate with a longstanding progressive track record of fighting for the working families of this country,” said Alan Minsky, executive director of Progressive Democrats of America. “Elizabeth Warren fits that bill, and she’s popular with Democratic voters in the progressive and centrist wings of the party.”
“A country in crisis needs a woman with a plan,” said Jeff Cohen, co-founder of RootsAction. “Elizabeth Warren has put out comprehensive plans to address the coronavirus pandemic, and the perilous economic situation of poor and working-class Americans. If Joe Biden wants a vice president who will help him tackle some of the greatest challenges our country has ever faced – and be ready to govern on day one – Senator Warren is his best choice.”
Along with her decades of experience in federal policymaking, the open letter points to Warren’s support for a Green New Deal and far-reaching structural reforms as positions that would excite the progressive base of the party – a segment of voters that Biden has struggled to win over.

OPEN LETTER TO JOE BIDEN ON VP SELECTION
Dear Vice President Biden,
As the presumptive Democratic presidential nominee, your choice of a vice-presidential candidate will be critically important in the run-up to the general election. If you want to unify the party and take back the White House, then you should choose the running mate best suited to those goals: Elizabeth Warren. Senator Warren is deeply qualified to be our next vice president, bringing decades of experience and a track record of leadership on issues from the Green New Deal to fighting corporate greed and corruption – issues that excite the progressive voters you’ll need to win the White House. Few senators have fought harder and more consistently for the kinds of structural reforms that would lift up working-class families and communities.
Senator Warren has also proposed some of the most comprehensive policy plans to deal with the consequences of the coronavirus pandemic. She has the tenacity and expertise to help ordinary Americans steer through this crisis, and she’d be ready to govern on day one. For all of these reasons, we’re asking you to choose her as your vice president. Biden-Warren would represent a unity ticket, one capable of generating enthusiasm from across the Democratic Party and beyond – and defeating Donald Trump in November.
Signed,
Progressive Democrats of America

RSN: FOCUS: Our Revolution, Progressive Democrats of America and RootsAction.org | Dear Governor Newsom

Reader Supported News
23 June 20

Every day is a new, very consequential battle for the basic funding RSN needs to survive. The hard, cold reality is that if we lose our intensity on funding even for a day, we won’t have any funding.
Match our intensity. Please.

Excerpt: "The imperative of defeating Donald Trump will require notable willingness of Democratic Party leaders to go beyond politics as usual. Calls for unity must be accompanied by genuine messages and realities of inclusion that can appeal to disaffected progressive voters."

The fact that Bernie Sanders received appreciably more votes in the California primary than any other candidate is one of the reasons why a vast majority of the state’s district-level Sanders delegates – elected two weeks ago – have signed a statement calling for Ro Khanna to be the chair of California’s delegation to the Democratic National Convention. The statement noted that, as a former national co-chair of the Bernie 2020 campaign, Congressman Khanna “would be well-positioned to serve as a voice for authentic unity” behind a ticket headed by Joe Biden. Endorsers of the statement included the California Nurses Association.
Selection of Congressman Khanna as chair of the California delegation – setting aside tradition and power politics in favor of fairness and a democratic process – would send an uplifting message nationwide. On the other hand, preventing a proper election for chair by delegates at the upcoming June 28 statewide meeting would convey to many progressives and others across the country that inclusion and transparency have remained more rhetoric than reality from powerful party leaders.
We ask you to join with us in supporting a truly democratic process for nominating candidates and electing one of them to be the chair of California’s delegation to the national convention. Anything short of such a process will have negative impacts – not only among California party activists and others who supported Senator Sanders in the primary but also among progressives nationwide.
Given our shared interest in creating as much authentic unity as possible behind the Democratic Party’s nominee to defeat Trump, it is essential that we avoid a replay of what happened in 2016 when the party establishment was correctly perceived as using non-transparent and anti-democratic tactics against Sanders supporters. We urge you to ensure that no such story emerges from California when the state’s delegation chair is selected.
Respectfully,
Our Revolution
Progressive Democrats of America
