MIDDLEBORO -- The iconic Dairy Queen is Middleboro, a mainstay in town for nearly 75 years, has changed owners. 

George Pennini of Middleboro sold the both the land and the business to Ferrara-Kendrigan LLC in Winthrop for $4.2 million, said Camila Madera, public relations specialist for real estate brokerage firm Marcus and Millichap.

The business has simply changed ownership but is remaining operational, Madera said.

The ice cream venue has deep roots in the community. Dairy Queen opened in Middleboro in 1952 and is the town’s oldest and longest-standing fast food venue.

A top performer for the company, the site is the most popular Dairy Queen among the 30 locations in Massachusetts based on foot traffic, Madera reported.

The Middleboro Dairy Queen is known as a “treats only’’ business that specializes in soft-serve ice cream drinks and products. Dairy Queen also has locations, known as Grill & Chill, that also offer food items.

Middleboro ranks as the second most profitable “treats only’’ locations in the country, Madera reported.

Located at 7 E. Grove St., Dairy Queen features an 1,880-square-foot freestanding building on a 0.75-acre parcel. The business includes a double-lane drive-through and 29 parking spaces.

Applications open for affordable housing at new Middleboro apartment complex

MIDDLEBORO — The Middleboro Housing Authority announced that lottery applications are open for 11 affordable housing units at the soon-to-open Lex Court Apartment Complex.

Construction on the complex, located at 480 Wareham St., is expected to finish in the fall. Once complete, the development will consist of 44 one-bedroom units. Two of the 11 affordable units will also be wheelchair accessible.

The 11 affordable units are all one-level living, with nine on the ground floor and two on the second level. These one-bedroom units range from 600 to 975 square feet. Rent for all the units will be $1,800 per month plus utilities, along with a $500 security deposit.

Of the two ADA-compliant accessible units, one is 600 square feet and the other is 940 square feet.

To be eligible for the affordable units, single applicants must earn no more than $72,950, while dual-income applicants must earn no more than $83,400.

The housing authority will hold two informational sessions for lottery applicants, one on Aug. 20 at 5 p.m. and one on Aug. 23 at 10 a.m. Both will be held at the housing authority building at 8 Benton St.

Applications for the lottery are due by Oct. 1 and can be picked up from Town Hall, the Middleboro Public Library or the housing authority building.

The lottery will be held on Oct. 22 at the housing authority building.

West Nile Virus found in Middleboro mosquitos, precaution urged

MIDDLEBORO — The Massachusetts Department of Public Health has confirmed the presence of West Nile virus in a mosquito sample collected from Middleboro, prompting health officials to urge precautionary measures.

The virus is most commonly spread to humans through the bite of an infected mosquito. The virus-carrying mosquitoes are found throughout Massachusetts, both in urban and rural areas. While anyone can be infected, individuals over the age of 50 are at a higher risk for severe illness.

Plymouth County Mosquito Control conducted truck-based spraying in Middleboro, Thursday and Friday morning, Aug. 7 and 8 between 2 a.m. and sunrise, covering the majority of residential and downtown areas. 

For additional spraying, residents will need to submit a request at https://www.plymouthmosquito.org. Those who wish to opt out of mosquito spraying can be added to the "No Spray" list through the same website. 

The Middleboro Health Department is urging residents to take common-sense precautions to avoid mosquito bites:

Use insect repellent. Recommended brands include those containing DEET, picaridin, IR3535, or oil of lemon eucalyptus. DEET should not be used on infants under two months old, and oil of lemon eucalyptus is not recommended for children under three.

Wear long-sleeved clothing. Pants are also recommended, particularly when outdoors, from dusk to dawn — peak mosquito biting hours.

Limit outdoor time. Activity should be avoided during early morning and evening, which are peak hours. 

Drain standing water. Residents should remove water from around their home to eliminate mosquito breeding sites. This includes birdbaths, unused flowerpots, wading pools, gutters and drains.

Install or repair screens. Screens on windows and doors will keep mosquitoes from entering homes.

“Our goal is to reduce the risk of mosquito-borne illness through both community-wide efforts and individual action,” wrote Kayla Smith, Middleboro Health Director. “We encourage residents to stay informed and take steps to protect themselves and their families.”

No human cases of the virus have been reported in Middleboro as of this writing.

Absentee, mail-in ballots available for Middleboro election

MIDDLEBORO — Absentee and vote by mail ballots for the Annual Town Election on Saturday, April 5 are now available at the Town Clerk’s Office.

Vote by mail ballots are available for all registered voters in Middleboro.

Absentee ballots are available for registered voters who will be unable to vote at the polls on

Election Day due to absence from town during normal polling hours; physical disability preventing them from going to the polling place or religious belief.

Registered voters must fill out the appropriate application which will allow them to have a ballot mailed to them or complete an absentee ballot at the Town Clerk’s Office. 

The deadline to submit an application to have a ballot mailed is Monday, March 31 at 5 p.m. The deadline to absentee vote in person is Friday, April 4 at noon. Completed ballots must be returned to the Town Clerk’s office by 8 p.m. on Election Day.

The Annual Town Election is Saturday, April 5. Polls are open from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.

Any written request with your signature is an acceptable application. You can simply write a signed letter to the Town Clerk's Office c/o 20 Centre Street, Middleborough MA 02346 to apply for your ballot.

Applying for a Primary Ballot

If you’re applying for a primary ballot, and you are not registered in a political party (Democrat, Republican or Libertarian), you must indicate which party ballot you prefer to receive. If you do not provide a party on your application, you will not receive a primary ballot.

If you registered as Unenrolled (commonly referred to as “Independent”) or enrolled in political designations, you are allowed to vote in the party primary of your choice. Your ballot choice will not affect your party registration.

Application Deadlines

Any mail-in ballot must be requested in writing at least five (5) business days before Election Day.

Apply as early as possible, especially if your ballot will need to be mailed out of town. The U.S. Postal Service recommends allowing up to 7 days for mail delivery. To ensure you receive your ballot with enough time to mail it back, you should apply 2-3 weeks before Election Day.

Returning your Ballot

There are several options for returning your ballot. You may return your ballot by:

• Mailing it back using the envelope provided
• Hand-delivering your ballot to your Town Clerk's Office, Annex Building, 1st Floor, Middleborough
• Dropping your ballot off at an early voting location during early voting hours
• Using the Town ballot drop box located on the side of the Annex Building, 20 Centre Street to the right of the main entrance doors

Track Your Ballot

You can track your ballot on the Secretary of State's website. This link allows you to see if the Town Clerk's Office has received and processed your application. You will be able to see when a ballot was sent to you, if and when your ballot was returned to the Town Clerk's Office and the status.

Ballots may not be dropped off at a polling place on Election Day.  Ballots must be returned to the Town Clerk's Office by 8:00 PM on Election Day.

MIDDLEBORO — Early voting in Middleboro will begin Saturday, Oct. 19 and continue through Friday, Nov. 1 at Town Hall, 10 Nickerson Ave.

Early voting hours are: Saturday, Oct. 19, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.; Monday, Oct. 21, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.; Tuesday, Oct. 22, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.; Wednesday, Oct. 23, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.; Thursday, Oct. 24, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.; Friday, Oct. 25, 9 a.m. to noon.

Early voting continues Saturday, Oct. 26, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.; Monday, Oct. 28, 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.; Tuesday, Oct. 29, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.; Wednesday, Oct. 30, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.; Thursday, Oct. 31, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Friday, Nov. 1, 8 a.m. to noon.

Absentee voting is available for registered voters who qualify. This includes voters who will be absent from town on Election Day or have a disability or a religious belief that prevents them from going to the polls.

Unlike absentee voting, early, in-person voting is open to any registered voter. 

The 2024 General Election will take place on Tuesday, Nov. 5, 2024. Polls will be open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m.

Precinct 1 votes at Oak Point Club House, 202 Oak Point Drive. Precincts 2, 4 and 6 vote at Middleboro High School, 71 E Grove St.

Precinct 3 votes at South Middleboro Fire Station, 566 Wareham St. 

Precincts 5 and 5A vote at Council on Aging, 558 Plymouth St and Precincts 7 and 7A vote at Nichols Middle School, 112 Tiger Drive.

To be eligible to vote in the General Election, residents must register to vote or make any necessary changes to their voter registration by Saturday, Oct. 26.

Middleborough Receives $2 Million SAFER GRANT to Hire Six Firefighters

MIDDLEBOROUGH — Town Manager James McGrail, Select Board Chair Mark Germain and Fire Chief Owen Thompson are pleased to announce that the Middleborough Fire Department was awarded a Staffing for Adequate Fire and Emergency Response (SAFER) Grant, which will support increased staffing.

“This was a tremendous collaborative effort between the Town Manager’s Office, the Select Board, our Fire Department and Grant Writer Stephanie Hall to put this proposal together,” said Town Manager McGrail. “We are extremely grateful to the Federal Emergency Management Agency for awarding Middleborough these funds.”

Distributed by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), the SAFER Grant provides funding for fire departments to assist them in maintaining industry staffing standards and ensuring communities and firefighters receive adequate protection while operating at emergency scenes.

Middleborough Fire was awarded $2,019,030 — which will be administered over three years — to hire six full-time firefighters, increasing firefighter safety and service to the community. The grant is anticipated to be accepted by the Middleborough Select Board at the Sept. 16 meeting.

The grant will cover 100% of the personnel expenses associated with the cost of hiring six new full-time firefighters, including the Town of Middleborough’s portion of their health insurance and pension liabilities, with no matching cost required from the Town.

With the grant, the Middleborough Fire Department will be able to operate its South Station 24/7 with a three-member engine company, in addition to a three-member engine company at Central Station. Currently, Middleborough Fire has a three-member engine company and a two-member ladder company at Central Station.

“There is a big difference between two-member and three-member crews,” said Chief Thompson. “With a three-member crew, we can immediately begin rescue and suppression efforts upon arrival, which we cannot safely do with just a two-member crew. This grant really allows us to align our staffing with department goals of maintaining adequate staffing and operating all stations whenever possible. Everyone has seen the difference having adequately staffed fire engines can make these days.”

As of Sept. 13, 2024, FEMA has made 139 SAFER awards totaling $215 million.

“Federal SAFER grants are key to strengthening firefighter forces and keeping communities safe,” said Sen. Elizabeth Warren. “I encouraged local fire departments across Massachusetts to apply for these federal investments, and I’m glad to see millions flowing to Middleborough to expand capacity and strengthen its local department’s ability to protect the community.”

“Middleborough’s residents will be safer because of this federal investment in the Middleborough Fire Department, and I commend the Town and MFD for their successful grant application,” said Congressman Bill Keating. “SAFER grants are designed to support safe staffing standards, and I am glad to see FEMA stepping in to ensure Middleborough residents will have three-member crews protecting them at both South and Central stations.”
