Did you know that polar bears are naturally gifted swimmers whose webbed feet help them paddle, and their blubber even helps them stay afloat? But due to global warming causing rapid melting of the Arctic, researchers are discovering that these majestic bears are now being driven to MARATHON SWIMS at unprecedented lengths in search of sea ice. And sadly, even these expert four-legged swimmers are struggling to keep up with the increasingly far distances: especially vulnerable baby polar bear cubs. One study followed a mama polar bear who swam for NINE consecutive days and 426 miles in search of ice. She survived but was weak and exhausted after losing 22% of her body weight. She also lost something perhaps even more precious on her harrowing journey: her baby cub. Polar bear cubs typically don’t have enough strength to swim for very long — so these poor little cubs often end up DROWNING. Scientists tracking one group of 68 bears reported that almost HALF OF THE CUBS who were forced to swim with their mothers had died. Climate experts agree that in order to STOP global warming from melting the rest of the ice in the Arctic, we must immediately mitigate greenhouse gases. But instead, the greedy cruise industry continues to accelerate and amplify the problem by POLLUTING sensitive polar bear habitats and nearby coastal communities with harmful toxins and emissions. Cruise pollution is exacerbating the ecological devastation in the Arctic and threatening all of those who live there. We have the power to slow down this human-caused catastrophe before it gets worse, and give vulnerable polar bears a chance to avoid EXTINCTION. Cruise ships can release more CO2 than ONE MILLION cars. They rapidly burn through harmful diesel fuel that is toxic to the Arctic, while this fragile region is already melting 4x FASTER than the rest of the Earth. And don’t be fooled: although some cruise lines are touting liquified natural gas (LNG) as a “greener” or “climate-friendly” alternative to the heavy petroleum fuel they burn, this is really just a corporate money grab through greenwashing. It’s actually far worse for our climate and the planet! Massive cruise vessels, the size of small cities densely populated with thousands of people, generate 1.5 GIGATONS of toxic wastewater every year — the equivalent of almost 600,000 Olympic swimming pools of toxic wastewater into our oceans every single year! Cruise companies are then carelessly, and often illegally, dumping this hazardous waste into our oceans. The toxic-laden wastewater and harmful air pollution from these massive cruise ships increase health risks like heart disease and respiratory illness, directly jeopardizing coastal communities, passengers, and crew. Meanwhile, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has done virtually nothing to rein in the reckless cruise industry or protect people and the planet from these negligent practices. But we refuse to let Big Cruise get away with threatening precious wildlife, coastal communities, and public health in the Arctic and its communities for the sake of profit. So, will you look the other way as this beautiful region disappears, leaving helpless polar bear cubs to die and frontline Arctic communities to bear the brunt of toxic cruise pollution? OR — will you call out Big Cruise NOW and demand accountability for this greedy industry’s corporate destruction? |
