Just weeks after a 6-year-old shot his teacher, a gun trade show in Las Vegas is hosting a manufacturer promoting its “JR-15,” a child-size AR-15 rifle. The company behind the heinous weapon promoted it with cartoon skulls and crossbones stylized as boys and girls. If we needed any further proof that we are a nation with a deep psychological and spiritual sickness when it comes to guns, this is it. There are few bigger threats to the safety of the American people than Republicans indoctrinating their children in the murderous cult of gun violence, and it is just sickening to see the very rifle that has slaughtered so many of their peers be advertised to American kids.

Greene, who in the past spread conspiracy theories about 9/11 and vocally supports the Jan. 6th insurrectionists, was given a position on the powerful House Homeland Security Committee, a hypocrisy that might be funny were it not so dangerous. Paul Gosar, a literal white nationalist, will take a seat on the House Committee on Natural Resources.

George Santos stole $3,000 from a veteran struggling to pay for his sick service dog's surgery
Navy veteran Richard Osthoff battled PTSD for years with the help of his devoted pit mix Sapphire. When she developed a stomach tumor, Osthoff reached out to Santos' "vet charity," not knowing that the whole thing was a scam. Santos set up a GoFundMe to pay for the scam, raised $3,000, closed the fundraiser and vanished with the money. Osthoff's beloved Sapphire passed away without surgery and the veteran, who was out of work with a broken leg, had to panhandle to pay for her cremation, saying "it was one of the most degrading things I ever had to do."

The US Supreme Court is considering the request of a 33-year-old transgender woman from Guatemala who is seeking asylum in a case her attorney calls life or death. Estrella Santos Zacarias, whose claims of gender violence and discrimination were rejected by Trump-era American immigration officials, was deported to Mexico in 2019 where she has faced ongoing health and safety challenges, according to a sworn affidavit. Most recently, she was beaten at a bus stop by three people and, months prior, she was bludgeoned unconscious at her workplace. A just society would do everything within its power to help her and ensure that her worst days are behind her.

Today’s Action: Do your part to end the national blood shortage!
We're nearing the end of National Blood Donor Month, so it’s the perfect time to call attention to America’s nationwide blood shortage and the thousands of vulnerable patients endangered as a result. Unfortunately, January’s ending doesn’t mean the blood shortage will; medical professionals will still have to make extremely difficult choices about who receives blood transfusions, to the point where some centers are forced to ration blood to extreme extents. In a world frequently facing unprecedented disasters, our emergency supply is quickly dwindling.
If you are 16 years of age or older, weigh more than 110 lbs., and are in good health you are eligible to donate up to six times a year.
If you’re an eligible donor, do your part to end the national blood shortage by finding a donation center in your area and making an appointment through the Red Cross. Your donation could save someone’s life!
Unfortunately, donating blood isn’t an equal-opportunity affair. Thanks to outdated — and frankly, embarrassing — restrictions rooted in institutionalized homophobia, gay and nonbinary people who are living as their truest selves are still excluded from giving blood and helping America protect patients from this severe medical crisis.
With shelf-life issues, recurring climate crises, the ongoing pandemic, staffing shortages, and countless other obstacles, the blood supply is more than tenuous and vulnerable. The current policy, rooted in bigotry with zero scientific basis, places unreasonable restrictions on gay and bisexual men. Estimates suggest an additional 360,000 men would likely donate should the policy be lifted, which could flip the nation’s blood shortage on its head and help more than a million people.
