The U.S. Department of Education is set to take an important, long-overdue step to protect the rights of all students. Under a newly proposed rule, discrimination based on gender identity could soon be illegal in school settings! Building off the Title IX civil rights law, the rule would ensure that children are able to use the correct bathrooms that align with their gender, and trans athletes would be free to compete in the sports team that matches their identity. Another significant improvement would be that sexual harassment and assault cases would finally be taken more seriously. This rule change would benefit kids across the country — and most especially trans and non-binary students in fear-mongering states like Texas, Utah, Florida, Idaho, and South Dakota, where their rights are actively under attack.   If implemented, this will be an excellent regulation change. But we shouldn't stop at standing up for trans kids' rights in schools. We must also prohibit discrimination in housing and workplaces! Right now, trans and queer individuals are still at risk in many areas of life. That includes the fact that, in many U.S. states, you can still be discriminated against, fired, and even evicted your own home for being gay or transgender. The LGBTQ+ population is one of the most vulnerable populations to harassment, violence, and suicide. Rather than piling on to historical pain from marginalization, we should be actively striving to create a country that is built on love and compassion. Sign the petition to urge the Department of Education to finalize and implement this important rule change! Additionally, the Departments of Housing and Labor must enact measures to protect the rights of trans and non-binary individuals, too!
