my response to Roe

Stacey Abrams for Governor

Today, the United States Supreme Court — the seat of justice charged with protecting our liberties — struck down reproductive rights. Women today lost the right to make our own health care decisions and the right to shape our own future.

As a woman, I am appalled. As a Georgian, I am enraged. As an American, I am disgusted by this abdication of all we hold dear. We are a better people than this — and we deserve to have our freedoms protected, not stripped away.

As of today, the threats to our right to choose are no longer theory. Brian Kemp, Georgia’s current extremist governor, signed a dangerous bill to ban abortion after 6 weeks of pregnancy in 2019. It has been held up in the courts. Now it will soon be the law of the land in Georgia. This means abortion will be outlawed before most women even know they are pregnant, and women and doctors can be fined or jailed for seeking or performing abortions after six weeks. This is outrageous and dangerous — and we will fight.

Frank, I will be reaching out soon about what actions we can and must take immediately in response to today’s decision. But right now I want to be clear: as Georgia’s next governor, I will fight to defend a woman’s right to choose, support access to reproductive health care with a comprehensive plan for Georgia’s women in this new post-Roe era and protect the rights of all.

But first, we have to win in November so I can take office and take action. Will you make your next donation to support our fight for reproductive rights in Georgia?

As a legislator, as a woman and as a Georgian, I have spent my career fighting for reproductive justice. I defeated a bill to inject racial division into medical decisions. I challenged bills that banned insurance coverage for abortion. I battled those who sought to limit a woman’s right to control her body, including the six-week ban that will govern the lives of Georgians.

As governor, I will work every day to ensure access to affordable and safe health care for all, including access to abortion. This will not be easy, but we are not alone.

We stand together — women, advocates, reproductive justice activists, the LGBTQ+ community, health care providers, allies and all in our state who will not be still or silent while we are under attack. We will continue the fight for safe access to the reproductive health care we need and deserve.

These fights will not be easy, but they are ones we can win. Please, if you are able, will you make a donation to my campaign so that we can stand up for reproductive rights and pursue reproductive justice?

In the days ahead, remember that we are not alone. Believe in our ability to protect one another. Lean into our capacity to defend our rights in the streets and at the ballot box.

And know that together, if we unite, good will be won.

Stacey
