Today’s Action: Honor Juneteenth this weekend and every day!

On June 19th, 1865, the Union Army arrived in Galveston, Texas, and shared the long-overdue news of Abraham Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation, which had officially freed Black slaves two-and-a-half years prior. To the thousands still enslaved in Texas at the time, the proclamation had been deliberately withheld and ignored by white slaveholders.

One year ago today, President Biden signed into law "Juneteenth National Independence Day," designating June 19th as a federal holiday to commemorate the end of chattel slavery in the United States. As June 19th falls on a Sunday this year, Monday is the observed federal holiday — but we want to make sure that you have plenty of time to observe Juneteenth events this weekend.

In many communities across the country, Juneteenth has been celebrated for more than 150 years. The decades-long campaign to recognize Juneteenth as a federal holiday exploded in 2020 following nationwide protests over George Floyd’s brutal murder at the hands of Minneapolis law enforcement.

Our country still has a long, long way to go in achieving true equity and justice for Black people, and it’s going to take far more than a designated federal holiday to get there. From community-based safety initiatives to voting rights to ending the war on drugs, we have so much more work to do. Juneteenth’s designation as a federal holiday is just one step among many in the fight to fully expose the United States’ sordid history of systemic oppression.

We wish those celebrating Juneteenth a proud, safe, and joyful day!

We ask allies to commit to taking at least one action in support: respectfully attending Juneteenth events and/or continuing self-education on historic and current systemic racism against Black people in the United States.

Don’t know where to begin? Check out the New York Public Library’s Spotlight on Juneteenth for a little of everything: events, reading lists, music, educator resources, kids storytime, and cooking lessons!
