There’s a voucher scheme to take money away from our public schools and hand it to private schools, which are often unaccredited and for-profit. Proponents call it “school choice.” But in practice it’s resulting in the closure of public schools across the country.
More Perfect Union traveled to Arizona where residents are seeing the impact firsthand.
We spoke with Arizona Attorney General Kris Mayes who told us, “It has ballooned into a billion-dollar boondoggle that is rife with misspending and fraud.”
An investigation by a local Arizona news outlet helped uncover the fraud being perpetrated by this school voucher scheme, including funds being misused on everything from trips to Disneyland to PlayStation 5s to a diamond ring to a tutoring company that doesn’t seem to exist. In Arizona alone, they uncovered at least $10 million of waste, fraud, and abuse.
Since Arizona expanded its school voucher program in 2022, another dozen states have done the same. In Texas and beyond it’s also causing a deterioration in the state’s public school education system.
Watch our new report, then take action today! Add your name to tell every state in the U.S. to reject private school voucher schemes that are undermining public education across the country.
This scheme has been promoted by billionaires including Donald Trump’s former Sec. of Education Betsy DeVos, and conservative megadonors Jeffrey Yass and Charles Koch. DeVos even admitted that funneling money away from public schools and toward unaccountable private schools is part of Christian nationalism’s work to “continue to help advance God’s kingdom.”
Children are our future and roughly 90% of students across the country attend public schools. But when public dollars are diverted away from public education, the impact is immediate and visible in classrooms.
Dr. Josh Cowen, author of “The Privateers,” told More Perfect Union, “Vouchers cannibalize dedicated money for public schools.”
States still have the power to stop this misallocation of public funds that are decimating public schools. Watch our new report, then add your name to tell every state in the U.S. to reject private school voucher schemes.
Let’s make sure our students, teachers, and families have the resources they need to create an inclusive future that includes all of us.
In solidarity,
-Faiz
