Bipartisan housing bill becomes law despite Trump’s refusal to sign it
A major housing bill will go into effect at midnight on Saturday without Donald Trump’s signature, after the president said he would refuse to sign the legislation because Congress has not approved new restrictions on voting nationwide. The measure, known as the 21st Century Road to Housing Act, is the biggest change to federal policy for buyers, renters and homebuilders in decades, and Congress approved it with large margins last month after lengthy negotiations between Democrats and Republicans.
But Trump has tied the bill to the Save America Act, which would impose a host of new restrictions on voters and state election officials nationwide ahead of November’s midterm elections, in which Republicans will be defending their majorities in the Senate and the House of Representatives. A version of the Save America Act passed the House in February, but it is opposed by Senate Democrats and lacks the votes in that chamber to overcome the filibuster.
Last month, Trump canceled a signing ceremony for the housing bill, denying his Republican allies an opportunity to publicly highlight their efforts to address housing affordability, which surveys indicate is a top concern among voters. The president later called the measure “a big yawn” and “so unimportant” compared with the Save America Act.

US demands Iran publicly state that Strait of Hormuz is open and Tehran won’t attack ships anymore
The U.S. is demanding that Iran make a public statement saying the Strait of Hormuz is open and that ships crossing the vital corridor won’t be attacked anymore, senior U.S. officials said Friday, adding that internal Tehran power struggles have made it difficult to reach and keep a deal. The U.S. officials, who spoke on condition of anonymity to describe to reporters the state of play with Iran, said the resumption of strikes this week came after what they described as a rogue faction of Iranian hard-liners trying to sabotage the ceasefire between Tehran and Washington.
It comes as U.S. President Donald Trump reiterated on social media Friday that he views the interim ceasefire deal as “OVER!” But he said the U.S. would continue talks aimed at putting a permanent end to the war.
Graham Platner officially withdraws candidacy for US Senate in Maine
Graham Platner, the Democratic nominee for US Senate in Maine, officially withdrew his candidacy on Friday afternoon, ending a campaign laden with scandals. Maine’s secretary of state confirmed Platner had filed the paperwork to remove his name from the November ballot, two days after Platner publicly said he planned to exit the race. In a letter shared on social media outlining the populist ideals that underlined his meteoric rise to the national political stage and drew widespread support in the state, Platner called for the movement built under his name to continue.
He expressed gratitude to those who supported him, and called for “a new kind of politics”.
“People are desperate for change. For this broken system to be righted. For the American experiment to be furthered,” he wrote, noting the more than 156,000 votes he received in the 9 June primary. “My name may have been on the ballot, but that ballot line belongs to the people of Maine.”

Man who was killed by ICE in Texas never "weaponized" his vehicle, witnesses say
The three men who were in the van when federal immigration officials shot and killed a man in Houston, Texas, this week are strongly disputing the Trump administration’s narrative of the events and are being pressured to sign deportation orders, according to their lawyer and lawmakers. The three men, who were arrested by immigration officials during the incident, denied that the driver of the vehicle, Lorenzo Salgado Araujo, “weaponized” his vehicle against Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officials. They also told their lawyer that there was never an ICE official in front of the van and that the shots that killed Salgado came from the “sides” of the vehicle.
Hugo Balderas-Ibarra, a Texas attorney representing two of the men in the van, said during a press conference on Friday his clients “reiterated that at no point was there ever an agent standing in front of the vehicle, nor was an agent ever placed in the line of danger”. The men’s claims were first reported by the Washington Post.
Three men, who can be seen cuffed and on the ground in the bystander footage moments after the shooting, are now being detained at the Montgomery processing center, a privately run ICE facility in Conroe, Texas. The men are reportedly being pressured to sign self-removal orders to be deported from the US.
